The Athletics and Padres have completed their late-June trade that sent infielder Jorge Mateo to San Diego, Oakland announced. The A’s will receive outfielder Julio Perez in return.
The 19-year-old Perez debuted in the minors in 2018 and then blossomed in rookie ball the next season, when he batted .268/.349/.512 with 11 home runs and 11 stolen bases across 238 plate appearances. FanGraphs then ranked Perez as the No. 22 prospect in a deep Padres system.
Mateo, 25, was a high-end prospect in his younger days, but he hasn’t been that productive in the minors or the majors over the past couple of seasons. He made his MLB debut in 2020 and batted .154/.185/,269 without a home run in 28 PA.

A’s could use some young OF prospects since they are weak in that area.

Absolutely! Great pick up let’s hope it works out for him.

Serious question. Why are all the trades with PTBNL all being resolved now?
need_a_no-no_pads
They can’t take place until after the World Series for certain players based on a timetable.
DarkSide830
Mateo was traded before the season. i dont think that’s what it is.

Wondering same thing. Odd time . Manfried is involved. Like rule five close to Christmas. Pissed if that was me. A

from Roch Kubatko: “Minor league players are allowed to be traded beginning at 9 a.m… They basically were frozen unless assigned to an alternate camp site over the summer.”
mlb1225
Oh yea, I completley forgot about that rule. That makes total sense now.
DarkSide830
i thought some of the trades already weny through though.
Daynlokki
They could if the players were on the 60 man.

Overpay
mlbnyyfan
I was upset when Yankees gave up Mateo for Gray but he’s definitely not lived up to the hype in his earlier years.
dtdt
Didn’t even get his name right…smh. Junior not Julio.
dan55
Hmm, I’m pretty surprised that the Padres gave up their 22nd best prospect for Mateo. Seems like a bit of an overpay.
DarkSide830
teams have their own rankings of their prospects, and what MLB.com, BA, and FG say has no bearing on that. also, FG is probably the most bullish, as is why they were cited. things can get a bit fuzzy once you get past the top 20 prospects.
dan55
Yeah, you’re right. However, if fangraphs is high enough on him that they think he is the 22nd best Padres prospect, then he is probably a good player, and probably too much for just Mateo.
WarkMohlers
You’re right. It’s an overpay.
There’s a reason people read and cite FanGraphs and front offices have hired from them. The valuations can’t be so far off.
Mateo was a very possible waiver casualty at the start. Many outlets were saying the As would have to lose one of Barreto, Mateo, Machin, or Kemp. The fact a player that was a very likely candidate to be gone netted them a top 30 SD prospect is very much an overpay.
But I will never fault SD for that with their performance this year.
dan55
Exactly. While this was probably a mistake by AJ Preller, the overall results from this Padres team means you can’t criticize him too much.
Deleted_User
Yes you can criticize him. Jorge Mateo didn’t help at all.
WarkMohlers
You can criticize this move, of course. But I think Dan purposefully added the “too much” because even though this move wasn’t great it’s a relatively minor move and Preller finally cashed in some of his chips this year like everyone has been shouting for him to do. Making multiple solid moves offset this move imo. So I agree you can criticize but not all that much

In no universe was Jorge Mateo worth a top 20 prospect from a top 3 farm system.
WarkMohlers
I never said he was, in fact I said the opposite. It was a bad deal and I explained why above.
I’m saying that this deal is so minor compared to the other deals Preller made in getting the SD to the playoffs this year that the criticizing this move too much seems pointless.
Was it a bad deal? Yes. Was it a big loss from the padres perspective? No.
Like the Braves getting Tommy Milone. I’m not going complain about that even though it was stupid because AA got Ozuna and darnaud to help with a playoff run. Win some lose some. Just hope the losses are small like the Mateo or Milone trades
LordD99
It probably won’t be a deal of great consequence to either team, but I wouldn’t draw strong conclusions on Mateo just yet.
zacharydmanprin
Junior Perez was 16 years old in 2018 not 19…and it’s Junior, not Julio.
LordD99
The sentence reads that he’s 19-year-olds (now) and debuted in the minors in 2018, so that part is correct. They did get the name wrong though.
Asfan0780
These young lower minors guys rarely do anything for A’s. The one that got away was Nelson Cruz in that useless Keith Ginter trade many years ago. I still would’ve kept Mateo, lacking options or not. Worst case, he’s a utility guy , multiple positions, pinch runner which is fine as an end of roster player

You’re upset about getting a top 20 prospect from a top 3 farm system for… Jorge Mateo?
zacharydmanprin
…I am not sure if you are being sarcastic or not.
lowtalker1
I don’t remember him in mlb top 30. Plus when you get that past 20 on the padres system them are a bunch over over 45 meh. Frangraphs is meh
Judge Judy
Mateo is going to be better than Moncada.

I was wondering what happened w/Mateo I haven’t been able to stay on top of everything due to being in the ICU @ our local Medical Center for 14 days . But now it makes sense.
This seemed to be an extremely good trade for both sides – Our infield is set for years providing They stay healthy and play smart. And to wait till after the season to complete any deal should be 2nd nature. I’m already for Spring training to start w/extremely high hopes for another favorable end w/1 change The Padres will be the ones lifting the WS trophy.
zacharydmanprin
You play for the Padres?
