This evening marked the deadline for teams to add Rule 5 draft-eligible players to their 40-man rosters. (MLBTR’s Steve Adams explained the process in full this morning). Accordingly, we’ve seen a large swath of transactions in the last few hours. Here, we’ll make note of the players each team protected from the Rule 5 draft, acquired from outside the organization, and removed from the roster before the deadline. We’ll also keep track of how many 40-man roster spots each team has left vacant.

I Beg To Differ
A lot of these comments about Rays winning the Pham Renfroe trade did not age well at all.

Nice job thanks for the update. Not that im complaining at all the only thing missed is open spots for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Still better then I would have done with the article, once again thank you for the hard work

Ha, almost pulled it off on the first shot. Thanks for the heads up! (Pirates’ 40-man is full btw).

7 open roster spots on the Nats. I wonder how active they are December 12.
BobGibsonFan
Lots of teams with no openings. Looks like only a few teams will take part in the rule 5 draft. Nationals might add to their bullpen.
Can you give a top 10 players available list?
jints1
I would guess that if teams see an attractive player available, they can still DFA a player on their 40 man roster.
BobGibsonFan
I think that date has passed. Rosters are set until the rule 5. Dec 10th I think.

Just scanning the players not protected in each teams top 30 prospects, only a couple names stick out.
Rockies Riley Pint, a number 4 draft pick. 100 mph fastball, a great curve ball change up and slider. Great k rate. Only problem huge walk rate. Maybe a pitching coach thinks he can fix him and claims him.
Twins shortstop Wander Javier. Defense is solid, has great speed and some power. Just cant seem to stay healthy. Take him in the draft, play him some as a bench player. He probably gets hurt and sits the rest of the year. Try and work with him next year.

Is the purpose of having open 40 man roster spots so the team can draft players in the Rule 5 draft?
BobGibsonFan
This time in the off-season. Teams set their rosters to protect players from the rule 5 draft. Then they can draft if they want. Then they can release players if they need room to sign free agents.
Right now they are protecting players for this draft.

Dodgers should have four spots open, not three
Dtownwarrior78
Seems that a lot more NL teams have left openings than their AL counterparts. Being a Tigers fan I was hoping they’d leave a spot open to maybe grab someone but looks like they won’t take part in the R5D. It does work sometimes, we grabbed Victor Reyes and he’s turned out to be a valuable asset as time as gone by. Starter for Detroit but a valuable 4th OF perhaps for a true contender.
DarkSide830
i don’t see why he cant be a starter with the numbers he’s put up. not every contender has an All Star filled OF like LAD
