The Yankees have set their 28-man roster for this week’s ALDS matchup against the divison-winning Rays. Here’s how it all breaks down:
Right-Handed Pitchers
- Luis Cessa
- Gerrit Cole (Game 1 starter)
- Deivi García
- Chad Green
- Jonathan Holder
- Michael King
- Jonathan Loaisiga
- Nick Nelson
- Adam Ottavino
- Masahiro Tanaka

New York makes just one change relative to their first-round roster. With the series length expanding from three to a potential five games, the Yankees added King as a multi-inning relief option for manager Aaron Boone.
In his place, catcher Erik Kratz was removed from the active roster. The veteran backstop will head to the alternate player pool, which also includes Miguel Andújar, Rob Brantly, Ryan Buchter, Matt Duffy, Thairo Estrada, Brooks Kriske, Tyler Lyons, Jordy Mercer, James Paxton (out with a flexor strain), Clarke Schmidt and Miguel Yajure.

Kratz was a spare part anyway, wouldn’t be used unless an emergency

Can’t do anything about the guys who are injured. I get it.
But we’re going to need a couple more pitchers to step up than the guys that did against the Indians. Still rankles me that for the second deadline in a row the Yanks did nada.
This squad really could’ve used another decent arm (or two!) in the pen.
I know Cashman is hyper focused on getting “value” & doesn’t seem to have any interest in giving in. Ever. (Cole was an ownership decision)
I’m sure most of us would feel a *lot* better having more proven depth in the pen.
Ah, well. It is what it is as the wise man said.

The injury to Kanle definitely hurts and no decent BP arm was available without giving up Garcia or Schmidt. The Yankees definitely need to get rid of Andujar but his value couldn’t get any lower. Cashman always afraid to go after that missing piece at the deadline. If Yankees get Verlander a few years ago he could of made the difference but ownership was refusing to take on more Salary at the time.

Bro.
What are you saying lol? There were a bunch of relievers available for way less than Deivi or Schmidt.
Givens and Bradley went for much lesser prospects. In fact, no relief pitchers fetched anything close to that. Iirc the Rangers were asking about those guys – but that was for Lynn. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking of?

We have the guy, his name is ottavino. He just needs to be better

Definitely could be.
He’s a guy the Yanks could really use.
Even if he does, it’s still – more than likely – going to take another arm, or two.
Loiaisiga has undeniably good stuff & he had some success this year. Not sure men on base was a good spot for him.
Cessa has actually been serviceable the last couple years. And he did throw well in last year’s LCS.
Again, I think the Yanks would’ve really benefited from adding another arm at the deadline – at a fairly minimal cost of prospects.
