TODAY: The Tigers have another internal candidate in first base coach Dave Clark, as Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports (via Twitter) that Clark interviewed for the manager’s job last month.
OCTOBER 26, 5:44pm: Athletics quality control coach Mark Kotsay has also interviewed for the job in Detroit, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
5:32pm: The Tigers have discussed their managerial vacancy with Braves catching instructor Sal Fasano, Jason Beck of MLB.com tweets.
Now 49 years old, Fasano played for an array of teams during a major league career that spanned from 1996-2008. He finished his playing career as a .221/.275/.392 hitter before moving into the coaching ranks. Prior to joining the Braves’ staff, Fasano garnered managerial experience at multiple levels in the minors with the Blue Jays and Angels organizations. He earned Manager of the Year honors with the Jays’ Double-A affiliate in 2011.
Now, Fasano is among a slew of candidates who could succeed the retired Ron Gardenhire in Detroit. MLBTR’s 2021 Managerial Search Tracker has the complete list of names.
Get that mustache a manager’s hat!!
Who haven’t they interviewed is the question.
After last night, Kevin Cash will be available.
Perhaps the most handsome Major League Baseballer of all time
We (Tigers) don’t need to experiment with another Ausmus…2 years away from being a legit contender…Open the bank for Hinch…proven winner…I am over the scandal…he did his crime and paid his time
Maybe two years away from being average. Long way away from being a contender.
Nah, its the Central. Contender in 2!
I agree… I still think in 2 years they won’t be very good, but it’s the central, so they might at least be a AL central division contender lol
The AL central comment is valid.
They can’t interview him until WS is over. They are interviewing a lot of guys which is good for the Tigers and good for the guys to go through the process. Hinch I think gets a gig so we shall see if Tigers get him.
His calligraphy is amazing
For real, best in the bigs
Al Avila is terrible gm 284-420 record under his watch. Eppler had a similar situation to al and was just let go, would not want this guy running my org.
Said that when they gave him the job. Very few hit moves, lots and lots of clunkers.
Houston had 4 year stretch before they became good that was worse than the Tigers. AA has two more years to see what happens with this young crew. If he hits, he stays. If his organization blew the picks, he’s gone.
Hate to see him leave Atlanta but would be glad for him
I feel left out. Am I the only human not being interviewed for the Tigers managerial opening???
You sure you haven’t been? Make certain that you didn’t miss any voicemails or had the email accidentally get flagged as spam. My interview is Wednesday at 2:00.
Honestly though, I like how Detroit is approaching this. Goes to show there really are a lot of qualified managerial candidates out there.
Which makes the White Sox seemingly quick decision on LaRussa rather puzzling.
I guess sometimes you just know who your guy is.
just because people are being interviewed doesn’t make them qualified. That’s what part of the interview process figures out.
Touche.
I guess it’s more like “seemingly” qualified candidates. For example, Fasano has a nice looking resume.
Go get it Big Sal
I’m not sure if Fasano is managerial material, but I know that his mustache is.
How would you know whether he is or he isn’t.
Hence the “I’m not sure” part.
Why did you read that any differently?
The thing is, if he’s thrown out of game by an umpire. How’s he going to put on a fake mustache and come back to the game?
Make the call to Bobby V.
Every time a subpar player becomes a coach, all I can think of is the expression “If you can’t do, teach.”
Although I should add that I really respect their love for the game.
Would you want an above par egotistical maniac former player managing your team being like…’hey, just hit 40 homeruns or strike out 10 batters per game’, its super easy!’?! lol…gimme a guy in the trenches that was grinding any day of the week to manage players;-)
Those guys probably have more knowledge of the game if you think about it. Not blessed with elite MLB talent, so they’ve had to grind, learn, and make themselves valuable in other ways. It’s also why you see a lot of former catchers getting managerial jobs as they have extensive knowledge of handling a pitching staff, game planning, and getting guys to buy in.
Mark Kotsay?!…wow blast from the past. Always liked him!
How many managers are the Tigers hiring? Seems like a Cattle Call!
Part of me dreads that this is all for show and Legendary Lloyd has already been promised the job. Just gotta make it look good first.
I hope and pray vigorously you that part of you is wrong but I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. Maybe, it plainly was something I are didn’t agree with me. I’ll take the bullet for that.
I really think I’m the only one that hasn’t been interviewed for the job.
Tigers need a lot more than a new manager to fix their woes. A new manager is nothing but lipstick on a pig.
didn’t fasano weigh more than his batting average for most of his career?
and yet no Mike Rabelo….
They’re just interviewing anybody and everybody until the World Series is over and the two cheaters are available. In the meantime, my interview with the Tigers is scheduled for later today. Wish me luck.
I keep getting a call & the Caller ID says Detroit.
Do You Think I Should Pick It Up Next Time?
Maybe they like my Posts on the Blog’s

My Team Will Rock!!!!!
Honestly, has a team not named the Tigers ever interviewed more candidates for a single position between seasons? With ten completed interviews and the potential for more when the season officially ends I cannot remember another team approaching a dozen actual interviews for a managerial spot. Anybody remember another team doing more?
The Red Sox are really close to that number this year as well. I believe they have (or plan to) interview over 10 people for their managerial vacancy.
So true and the White Sox list of interviewed is still only Tony LaRussa. Sort of makes one feel the Sox have their guy (Hinch) all ready and were just waiting for the World Series to end.
OCTOBER 30th: 11:47 PM: It’s reported that disgraced former manager A.J. Hinch was interviewed by the Tigers minutes after his suspension ended.
OCTOBER 30th: 11:59 PM: The Detroit Tigers have come to terms with disgraced former manager A.J. Hinch on a three year deal.
If Dave Clark gets a job as manager he’ll be Glad All Over. If you’re young, google.
I was today years old when I realized my brain has jumbled The Dave Brubeck Quartet and The Dave Clark Five for about as long as I’ve been aware of both. It’s almost certain that “Take Five” is to blame.
I was going to say that Dave Clark should be a basketball coach.
Dave Brubeck. Indeed. Most recognizable song opening, that cadence and those chords.
With Tony LaRussa being named manager of the White Sox, it leaves A J Hitch as a prime candidate as the manager for the Tigers.
