The latest minor moves from around the game…
- The Yankees announced that they have outrighted catcher Wynston Sawyer to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The team selected Sawyer’s contract in the middle of September, but he didn’t end up seeing any major league time in 2020. In his most recent professional action in 2019, Sawyer – an eighth-round pick of the Orioles in 2010 – batted .260/.333/.409 with two home runs in 171 plate appearances with the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate. The 28-year-old joined the Yankees on a minor league contract in February.
- The Mariners have re-signed outfielder Connor Lien to a minors deal, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets. Lien, 26, was a 12th-round pick of the Braves in 2012 who, to this point, has played his entire professional career with the franchise. He divided the most recent minor league season in 2019 between Double-A and Triple-A, where he combined to hit .211/.314/.441 with 11 homers over 246 trips to the plate.

Missed the Rays firing Kevin Cash

Why go to Anderson when Snell is pitching so well just because of analytics.
martevious
Why? is a good question!
It was the stupidest thing I ever saw. Taking out your pitcher who has been lights-out. Just because they use analytics, they shouldn’t stop using their brains!
keysox
Just stupid. As a White Sox fan, I saw the same thing in game 3 against Oakland. Ricky R. Was shown the door days after.
That’s why experienced playoff managers are hard to find.
Goodbye Kevin Cash.

Especially when Anderson hasn’t pitched well in his last several appearances.

You answered your own question. Leaving Snell in would have gone against the numbers, even though anyone with decent vision could see how well Snell was pitching. This is the major flaw ingoing strictly by the numbers. You shouldn’t take the human element out of the equation. Second, Cash brought in Anderson who has pitched poorly this Post Season. He had other options at the time.
Perksy
Because it’s the Rays, they are all about analytics. They invented the shift and the opener.

No World Series appearance in 11 years…….
martevious
Cash singlehandedly lost the series for the Rays. He outsmarted himself.
keysox
In the real world, he is canned. Lineup and handling pitchers
Team has zero faith in this guy.
Goodbye

Betts already struck out twice weakness is left handed pitching strength is hitting right handed hard throwing righties. What analytics would dictate that move ??
bobtillman
So ya gotta dance with the one that brung ya…..they got there by their number crunching, they followed it through….
And of course Cash said it was his decision….of course it wasn’t. But Kevin knows which side the bread is buttered on. Any manager who blasts his FO has a nice career as a 3B coach.

To everyone commenting on Cash: the grass is not always greener and rarely does one mistake do a manager in. That would be shortsighted and most likely backfire unless they decide to sign Hinch or Cora. Cash was successful throughout the season at managing fatigue and balancing the staff. Not every manager can go 40-20 with that mediocre to bad of a lineup. Without Arozarena they don’t even make the world series.
