The Marlins have declined their $4MM option over right-handed reliever Brandon Kintzler, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald tweets. Kintzler will receive a $225K buyout, but the Marlins remain interested in bringing him back at a lesser rate than he would have gotten had they exercised his option.
After a solid season with the Cubs in 2019, Kintzler joined the Marlins on a $3.25MM guarantee last winter. Although their bullpen ended up as one of the worst in the league in 2020, Kintzler was a good contributor. Across 24 2/3 innings, the 36-year-old managed a stingy 2.22 ERA, a 57.3 percent groundball rate and 12 saves in 14 chances, thus helping the Marlins to their first playoff berth since 2003.
On the downside, Kintzler recorded one of the game’s worst K/BB ratios (1.27), posting 5.18 K/9 against 4.07 BB/9. In fairness to Kintzler, though, he hasn’t been a high-strikeout pitcher throughout his career, and his ability to keep the ball on the ground has led to a quality 3.31 ERA with several different teams over 448 2/3 major league innings.

It’s like Alabama making fun of Mississippi’s education system.
MetsFan22
Yankees fans are Alabama though
MoRivera 1999
Whoosh! Right over your head.
MetsFan22
I got the joke. I just wanted to use the opportunity to point out the Yankees fans are the Alabama of the US
MoRivera 1999
Because you’re never one to pass up the opportunity to be a d-bag. Does ANYBODY like you anywhere? I doubt it. You trash the NL East. You trash the entire AL. That’s 2/3rds of baseball right there and I’ll bet you selectively snipe others as well. I know of no more obnoxious homer than you.
MetsFan22
Lol Yankees fan stay classy
MetsFan22
How I my a homer if I have the Braves winning the division????
MetsFan22
Bc we got Cohen baby!!!! Good luck in the basement next year.
earmbrister
I hope Cohen’s a pitcher
MetsFan22
He isn’t. Which is why they’ll get pitching.

Fan of last place Mets making fun of a team that made the playoffs, and has just as many championships as the Mets in 3 less decades of existence.
I now have seen an ugly, fat hairy chick make fun of how a medium build, decent looking chick looks in a swimsuit.

I get the whole losing money thing this season for teams and whatever thing they all want to say… But his level of production at 4 million seemed like a no brainier. Even a good setup man runs more than that these days. And he really bought in to what the team was doing. He was a great leader. And who do they have left in the pen? Yimi Garcia? A bunch of guys who should be starters they want to try in the pen?
andrewgauldin
I’m all for letting some of the young guys join the pen, since it seems like our rotation is pretty full. But damn, not picking up Kintzlers option is head scratching.
Dogbone
I thought he did a great job for the Cubs. I didn’t understand why they let him walk.
Rangers29
Why? Why? …Why? Huh? What? How? Why?
I understand he’s not a closer, but you fix that by getting a closer. I can see him being an excellent 7th or even 8th inning guy, but they need a Giles or somebody in front of him. Heck they could even go cheap and try to pry Montero or Leclerc from Texas (the latter being more expensive). There’s Kela or Colome too… just so many options out there. I hope they have a plan.
shibbynotdude
FIP, strikeouts per 9, hard hit rate and batting average on balls in play seem to show a pitcher who benefited from luck. Owners don’t pay for ERA anymore.
jints1
It appears that finesse relievers are not having their options picked up. The K/BB ratio is becoming a yardstick. Teams want Ks from their relievers.
FrontRowMarlins
Writing was on the wall too many teams around the league are not picking up options. Lots of similar bullpen pieces have been let go around the league.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
When do the Red Sox start jumping on these guys? When does that waiver start or the thing where Pittsburgh gets first shot and the other crappy teams like Boston 4th chance at these guys? When does that happen? Pick up Brad Hand as a closer, then a couple other guys and the Sox are right back in it.
Need 3 new starting pitchers and away we go. Plus a new center fielder and second baseman. I think that’s all we need. What’s that 12 new guys out of the 25 roster LOL. Let’s do this !!
UnknownPoster
You’re mixing couple things up
For this, an option declined, there’s no waiver wire. He gets his 225K from Mia and is now a free agent. free agency begins 5 days after end of World Series. He could sign with Boston that day for any amount
You’re thinking of the waiver wire. That’s when guys are removed from the 40 man roster. There is a separate time frame on these, I want to say it’s usually a 10 day wire period. Sure someone can confirm
With this, if youre claimed, a new team gets you… and your exact contract. Ex, Brad Hand. Someone has to pay him 10M, or decline his option and pay buyout. There’s no choice for you where you go as a player (unless you’re a veteran With certain service time who goes unclaimed, but that’s too deep for this convo)
UnknownPoster
So since Hands option just got declined, looks like no one claimed him and now he’ll be a free agent. Relievers gonna get screwed this year
dan55
I believe teams have 2 days to make waiver claim.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Lol
So much for “hoping” they could keep him.
Man… another pretty interesting reliever. Great year to have to fortify a bullpen.
MoRivera 1999
So who do the Yanks pick to replace Ottavino?
Ducky Buckin Fent
Ottavino’s rebound is the choice there. He’s basically the same cost as Brad Hand.
No one will be trading for him, serious.
Yanks gotta hope he gets back in his Brooklyn pitching lab and gets back on track.
I’m actually not unconvinced he isn’t close. His numbers were really inflated due to his horrendous pitching in Buffalo (including a six earned no outs (!) appearance).
I’m hoping to see the Yanks add one (actually two…but…) of all the quality pen arms available. A lot of these guys are going to be in the 2-5 mil range.
seth3120
This is what teams are doing. If they feel like they can bring a guy back for a million or two less they will absolutely decline their option. Brad Hand just cleared waivers if that helps clear up the question on the bullpen market.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Sure does.
Rsox
Could be they try to sign him for a lower rate. Seems most teams are declining options on most players right now
GONEcarlo
I mean if I was Kintzler I would probably take whatever the Marlins are offering right now, which I’m guessing is somewhere around like 1-2M, based off what seems to be going on around the league. The Marlins know they don’t have to pay him if no other team is willing to, and it’s clear every team is underpaying relievers this offseason if Brad Hand went unclaimed. It’s almost as if teams are colluding to keep prices down. I know this tepid market is likely only temporary from COVID, but I’m sure the Player’s association is not going to be happy.
Marlinsfan05
Yeah I mean, teams are pretty much loosing interest in 90 mph guys with high walk rates and low k% he doesn’t miss bats, & needs to almost be perfect control wise to be effective.
Selkies
This one seems odd when you consider how solid he’s been there. I wouldn’t at all mind if the White Sox picked up.
MarlinsFanBase
I am surprised by the Kintzler situation, but not shocked.
When looking at the big picture for next year, when we all see quite a few high-quality relievers not being exercised, the Marlins will be entering a buyer’s market. Since they are set at most other areas of their roster other than bullpen, they can find what they need in this relievers market.
