The Mariners announced that they have claimed right-hander Domingo Tapia from the Red Sox via waivers. Seattle now has 34 players on its 40-man roster.
Tapia, formerly a farmhand with the Mets and Reds, joined the Red Sox on a minor league contract last December. The hard-throwing 29-year-old wound up making his major league debut with Boston this past season and tossing 4 1/3 innings of one-run, four-hit ball with four strikeouts and two walks. Tapia has also spent time at the Triple-A level, where he has pitched to a 4.34 ERA and posted 6.8 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9 over 134 2/3 innings.

Why does this guy go before Matt Hall?
Stevil
Because he’s injured?
He hit the IL just before the season ended. It didn’t sound that serious, but maybe Boston felt they could sneak him through waivers because of that and simply failed?
Ironically, that’s more or less what Seattle tried to do with Art Warren.

My thought exactly Stevil! Hmmm…There must be more of a long term injury threat associated with Art Warren. Something!
Stevil
I meant that trying to sneak him through waivers may have been the same plan. I haven’t anything of Warren being injured, but I know his command took a step backwards and he lost some velocity.
The bigger concern with Tapia is probably his command. But the velocity’s there and he has options, so it won’t hurt Seattle to tinker with him.

Can’t believe they waived him. Not that was lot of hope as a career MiLB guy, but keeping piles of rubbish over this guy, who was throwing upwards of 100 and “seemed” to finally find the strike zone is beyond idiotic.

I agree… like there’s got to be a dozen guys ahead of him in the Sox bullpen that showed absolutely nothing last year and don’t have anywhere near the raw talent that this guy’s has. Why keep those guys over him? Just doesn’t make sense… they seem way to willing to give up on guys with big K/9 potential and way to keen on keeping “finese guys” who even at their best can’t strike guys out to save their lives. Best of luck to Tapia… he clearly has the ‘stuff’ to be a ML P and he seemed to finally figure things out in his, albeit brief, shot at the majors this past year. Wish the Sox would’ve given him more of a chance instead of trotting out guys like Matt Hall and company.

Oh great the Sox released one of the like 3 total relievers who managed to get more outs than runs allowed. Not saying he was going to be a star — or even part of their ML team going forward… but there seriously should be like a dozen guys ahead of him to be waived before a guy who only allowed 1 run in 4 and a third IPs

Tapia
2018 – AAA Reds – k/9 6.43 – whip 1.30
2019 – AAA Sox – k/9 7.09 – whip 1.61 – bb/9 4.36
Tapia has talent as he was hitting upper 90s and 100 mph, but was never going to be on the 40-man. The Red Sox tried to slip him through before the World Series ends and teams start to dumb players… He had 3 options, but no room on the 40-man
He is the first of another 16 to 17 players to be put on waivers to be removed from the 40-man and hopefully pass through to AAA, but AAA is pretty full even without Tapia.

To many HR’s, to many walks. Throws 100?
Alot of those kind of throwers around.
Why waste a spot on a 29 yo , destined for AAA?
DarkSide830
he’s a career minor leaguer who was good but in a short stint. like him over most of the Sox guys but that’s a very low bar. chances are all the other BP slop is designated already or will be soon.

Tapia was roster filler in Pawtucket and if he had cleared waivers would have been the same for the Woo Sox. If he pitches in the mlb you know you had a very bad year. That said at upper 90s mph if he every improves his control he could be useful, but the chances of that are very low
