Let’s check in on a few East Coast clubs…
- The Phillies will not retain bullpen coach Jim Gott, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. Gott held the role for three years, but the Phillies elected not to renew the former big league right-hander’s contract. The move comes on the heels of a disastrous season for the Phillies’ bullpen, which posted a bloated 7.06 ERA en route to a last-place finish in the league. The unit’s struggles played a major part in the Phillies’ failure to earn a playoff berth. Now, with Gott gone and pitching coach Bryan Price having retired, that aspect of Philly’s coaching staff is in for a shakeup.
- After a second straight abbreviated season, Yankees third baseman/outfielder Miguel Andujar will report to the Dominican Winter League, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes tweets. Andujar looked like a budding star as a rookie in 2018, but he has played just 33 games since then, owing in part to a serious shoulder injury he suffered in his second season. While Andujar did come back this year, he was unable to unseat Gio Urshela as the Yankees’ No. 1 option at third base. Andujar wound up slumping to a .242/.277/.355 line with one home run in 65 plate appearances.
- The Yankees have lost a pair of minor league coaches to the Marlins, as George A. King III of the New York Post reports that Tommy Phelps and Phil Plantier are headed to Miami. Phelps would have been the Yankees’ Triple-A pitching coach had a minor league season taken place, while Plantier was in line to serve as their hitting coach. Phelps will now work as the Marlins’ assistant pitching coordinator, though Plantier’s role is unclear. These hirings continue a deep Yankees connection for the Marlins, who are co-owned by Derek Jeter, managed by Don Mattingly, and employ Gary Denbo as their director of player development and scouting.

The lack of consistency for the Phils has to be tough on players. Different coaches every year. And if Realmuto signs elsewhere, their ace will be throwing to his 5th catcher in 7 seasons. It’s ridiculous. You need some stability somewhere.
Pax vobiscum
LA to step down from the booth and honorary king of Phillies Fantasy Camp to take over. It may be ugly but it will be funny.
DarkSide830
I want Bowa back as the bench coach
ctyank7
Hey, if Nola sees JT walk away from the chronic disfunction, would you be shocked if his manager starts to push forward a trade? He had two years left on his contract.
ctyank7
**his agent.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
What ace? That’s the true problem.
VonPurpleHayes
No. It really isn’t the true problem. Nola had what? 2 bad starts? Wheeler was great as well. And Eflin is solid. The bullpen was the problem.
seth3120
Anytime you finish dead last in something you can be fairly confident that’s the place to start in the off-season. I think it was clear going into the season that they had holes in the pen and ultimately led to Klentak being dismissed.
fair-critic
Cut. Andujar. From. The. Roster. NOW.
Old User Name
Doesn’t sound like fair criticism to me.
Phil Leotardo
Especially when Yankees fans kept saying they that he is more valuable than DeGrom….
rocky7
Okay Phil whatever…smartass, this a Yankee fan that wants to know what was said when…..waiting….waiting….waiting….the usual bull from all you other baseball pundits who always get it right!
jdgoat
You are literally the person who said they wouldn’t trade him for the best pitching prospect in baseball in Pearson…
bucketbrew35
I’d be happy to see the Phillies pick him up if they did.
top jimmy
That would be stupid. Andujar’s numbers aren’t that bad when you consider he was hitting .091/.130/.091 half way through the season. He got more at bats in the 2nd half, and his numbers steadily improved as his playing time increased.
top jimmy
Andujar hit .355/.394/.581 in September and October. He just needed some ABs to get warmed up. The guy knows how to hit.
lowtalker1
I thought that said Phillips… I was like whoa, did Brandon Phillips get a new deal ?
DarkSide830
he played indy ball this year actually
MetsFan22
Remember the trade rumors???
Andujar
Frazier
2 minor leaguers not in their top 3
For Degrom lol..
Yankees fans are definitely the least educated.
MoRivera 1999
Yeah never saw that one. I think you made it up. That would be your style. World’s biggest wild-eyed Mets homer AND Yankee hater AND the site’s biggest attention-seeking loudmouth. You’re a piece of work alright.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Yankees fans have overvalued both Andujar and Frazier for years. Given the Yankees need to cut payroll, Frazier isn’t going anywhere this year. They need his cheap salary. They should also hold onto Andujar to see if he can rebuild any value for him. I think Yankees fans are in for a very disappointing offseason. I’d expect them to sign 1-2 SPs (not Bauer) and some low cost veterans. DJL is most likely gone as well.
Sideline Redwine
I cannot see NYY allowing LeMahieu to walk. They’ll pay him. I agree not much else–starting pitcher/s–but they will make sure to bring him back.
rocky7
Yeh, that’s why the Yankees have missed the playoffs once in the last 2 generations…..disappointing season….that would be other teams best seasons for sure.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah. Overvalued, @mantooth.
You mean the 2018 ROY runner up & a guy who could always hit at the big league level who made himself into a Gold Glove finalist, right?
Overvalued *those* guys… right?
Oops…looks like some reality crept in – uh?
😉
luclusciano
Stop bringing facts into the conversation. They make too much sense.
martyvan90
Thanks Dorothy Cashman or is it Mantooth Steinbrenner.
Phil Leotardo
No I heard it. sny.tv/articles/yankees-reportedly-wouldnt-trade-t… It was all the rage on WFAN 2 years ago when Yankees fans kept saying Miguel is a stud and DeGrom is a loser who can’t win games…..
Sideline Redwine
if he can’t win games, why would the Yankees want him?
rocky7
Clown comments from clown pundits!
Gasu1
LOL. If you want to hear the “thoughts” of the dregs of humanity, just listen to the idiots who call into sports talk shows to propose trades. Any team, any station.
pinstripes17
You’re a clown bro, keep enjoying last place buddy.
Old User Name
@Pinstripes. It’s always funny to listen to mets fans. You’d think they would be too ashamed to talk so much.
Phil Leotardo
@Joe Says funny seeing how Rob Manfred is a Yankees Fan…… and the president of US so lmao
MarlinsFanBase
I remember all that greatness that was to come from the greatest pitching staff in MLB history in the “Five Aces” of deGrom, Harvey, Syndergaard, Matz and Wheeler.
Seems only 1 of the 5 lived up to the hype.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Are you making things up again, @metsfan22?
Wouldn’t your time be better spent putting together a ten player list of free agents you expect Cohen to sign, young man?
Seriously, enjoy your team & their players. Be excited about new ownership – we all would be!
But – for real – your inferiority complex towards the Yankees makes you appear…well…*inferior*.
Uh?
Budlight Selig
I’m glad Philly Gott rid of him. Time to sign Cliff Lee to mentor the younger arms and reinvigorate the pitching staff. Not like it could get any worse at this point.
Rsox
I remember Phil Plantier coming up with the Red Sox in the early 90’s. Had one big year with the Padres in 1993 and then was shipped to the Astros in the Padres/Astros mega trade before the ’95 season. Ultimately he would be sent back to SD during the ’95 season
Mlb1971
Phil Plantier ( I remember him well)….
1993
HR – 34, RBI – 100, with SD
He was traded for José Melendez who pitched well for SD and did nothing in two years with the Red Sox.
DarkSide830
Id look at Chris Young (the Padres one) and Craig Breslow as options for Philly’s pitching/BP coaches. Ivy league guys that know how to play their positions. (also I know Breslow has a position as somebody’s coach already, just think they should inquire)
Brixton
Chris Young is a high ranking official in the league office
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I really envision a decline in Realmuto. He’s not young anymore and catchers tend to decline early.
LordD99
Realmuto is good, not elite. Decent probability the team that signs him will overpay and be disappointed. Decline phase could begin early in his contract.
mlbnyyfan
Congratulations to the Dodgers. Andujar needs a new team. The Yankees window is closing sooner rather than later. The Dodgers built the team the right way with player development and signing some players throughout the lineup. Player development allowed them to trade for Betts and still keep the core in LA. The Yankees know nothing about this. They need to make several bold changes trade Judge, Sanchez, Andujar, Stanton. TB is going to be a handful to deal with for awhile.
fitsiqis65
status quo risk adverse cashman to the rescue….. nothing will really change with him there
louwhitakerisahofer
How about the Cubs go and get Andujar?
If they keep Bryant, shift him to LF and move on from Schwarber (thanks for the memories Schwarb’s, I’ll still come to your block parties).
mlbnyyfan
I’d gladly take Schwarber for Andujar. Let’s make it happen
