The Yankees announced that outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, infielder Gio Urshela and right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga have all been reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Miguel Andujar and Mike Ford were optioned to the alternate training site in corresponding moves, and the Yankees already had an open roster space since right-hander Clarke Schmidt was optioned after Sunday’s game.
Stanton hit the IL with a left hamstring strain back on August 9, and the Yankees and their fans are hoping that the slugger can finally enjoy a sustained run of healthy play after almost two full seasons of inactivity due to various leg injuries. Stanton played in only 18 games in 2019 and appeared in 14 games this season before going on the injured list, with this year’s absence being particularly disappointing since Stanton was off to a huge start (hitting .293/.453/.585 with three homers in 54 PA).
However, Stanton’s return gives him time to get ramped up prior to the postseason, as the Yankees are starting to get healthy at perhaps just the right time. Urshela will back to action after a minimal 10-day placement due to a bone spur in his right elbow, and the third baseman has followed up his breakout 2019 campaign with a strong .272/.358/.515 slash line and six homers in 120 PA this season. Aaron Judge is also expected to soon return from a calf injury.
Loaisiga’s return is also welcome news for the Yankees, especially considering the rather unusual nature of his IL placement. On September 4, the Yankees said Loaisiga was suffering from “a medical condition that prevents him from playing and necessitates placement on the injured list,” with manager Aaron Boone later specifying that the right-hander’s absence was not due to COVID-19. Regardless, it is good to see Loaisiga back in relatively quick fashion. The 25-year-old has a 3.18 ERA, 5.00 K/BB rate, and 10.6 K/9 over 17 innings this season.

Yankees pulling out all the stops to take back 2nd place from Toronto.
mlbnyyfan
Judge still out. Trade him this winter.
fair-critic
You’re not a Yankees fan, you’re a troll. He’s the face of the game, and certainly the face of the franchise. With all the training the Yankees have given him, and how much of an admirable leader he is, Judge is never playing anywhere else. Get used to him or get out of NYY baeseball.
Ancient Pistol
This is an accurate assessment. Trading Judge, though as a Yankees fan I would potentially consider it, is a non-starter. Trading Judge would be the same as Boston trading Betts. The Boston faithful absolutely hated this trade and feel betrayed by the Boston Rays.
One or two things will happen with him. He’ll either continue to get hurt and the Yankees will make a modest offer where Judge will have a short career, or they’ll give him everything and cross their fingers he can play more than 100 games a year.
luckyh
Betts is not the same as Judge. Judge isn’t an MVP, he isn’t a pending free agent, and can’t stay healthy. Next.
Begamin
And Judges name isnt spelled the same as Mookies, next is right!!!
Relax genius, the comparison was made because they are/were both fan favorites
luckyh
Apples and oranges, carry on though. Fellow Yankee fans eat it up with a spoon.
luckyh
I am a lifelong Sox fan BTW and was not upset with the Mookie trade. He wasn’t coming back. Both sides did what was best for them . Nothing wrong with that.
stansfield123
You’re right, Betts is not the same as Judge. The main difference is that Betts has a 138 career OPS+, and Judge 153. So Judge is a much better hitter.
luckyh
Did you pull a muscle with that reach? Every team would take Betts over Judge, no question. Betts stays on the field.
Joggin’George
Judge WAS the face of the game. No longer. Trading him (if and only if you get an absolute haul) is not necessarily so dumb. He’s unlikely at this point to ever duplicate his rookie year (it happens, some guys best season ever is their first); a trade could maximize his value for the team.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Like Joe Charboneau back in the 80’s, remember Cleveland?
costergaard2
I’m not opposed to trading Judge, they have a lot of OFer’s. Judge can’t stay healthy and the Yankees have a lot of players to spend money on…
Rocket32
fair-critic It doesn’t mean he’s a troll, it just means he’s realistic. Judge is great on the field and off the field but the guy can never stay healthy. There’s not much reason to believe it’s going to get any better as he ages. They should absolutely be open trading him.
andremets
What is the difference between Judge and Cespedes? If I can fair value for Judge, I have to consider it. Fan favorite? Was there some poll to prove that? Torres and Lemaui are welled liked to. Are they untradable as well?
wild bill tetley
The face of the franchise can’t stay on the field. That is a problem.
That problem, however, isn’t netting as big a return. Can’t trade Judge based on that fact.
That is a fair critique.
Metfan1964
You have to consider his point- he is always hurt . If the team has any doubts about his health they are not going to spend heavily on him.. If healthy he is a true beast a true face of the league but he has to play..
jakethesnizake
I actually agree with mlbnyyfan on Judge. Dude can’t stay on the field for a full season and he’s going to be due for a contract before long.
He’d net us a major haul in return and allow us to invest the $ in guys who actually play most of the season.
Would be a tough pill to swallow for any Yankees fan, he’s a good human and leader, but until he demonstrates the ability to stay healthy, it’s hard to justify giving him the $$ he’ll undoubtedly ask for in an extension.
We are already stuck with a massive contract for a guy who can’t stay on the field (Stanton), not a good idea to replicate that.
Ancient Pistol
You’re not getting a haul for a guy who is always hurt. Wake up.
MarkoRock68
Let me see if i get this , you think Judge will net a “haul” but he is always injured and his price is going up. That about sum it up?
Sooo rival GMs are just gonna back the truck up and assume the injury risk and rising salary because??
luckyh
Because he is a Yankee of course.
jakethesnizake
There are GMs out there who would happily take a chance on a guy with his ability and hope he stays healthy.
Not implying he’d bring back multiple pieces, but he’d certainly net one or two high end prospects. I’d be fine with one.
leftyleftylefty
You’re out of mind man.
costergaard2
The Yankees need to spend on pitching (Tanaka, Happ, and Paxton gone). They have plenty of OF and two that can’t stay on the field…
Shaun owens
They will keep him , and as a yankee fan we can just hope the injuries can get less and less
PapiElf
Andujar was looking really good with the bat recently. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t send down Estrada.
Ancient Pistol
I agree, He seemed to be turning it around.
jakethesnizake
Have to believe the decision stems from defensive ability (or lack there of).
bronxbombers
I think Yankees are squeezing out and an extra year of service time
Shaun owens
Yeah Estrada good in defense, but hasn’t looked good batting all year . I guess they want his glove fmore then andujar .. I feel bad for andujar he was really coming around with his hitting .
jerseystrongsports
Need defense, he can play multiple. Would like to see Miggy get it figured out
pasha2k
Sometimes it takes a player a little while to really find himself.
As far as Stanton goes, he is not a fave of mine, and I like many of the NYYs being a RS fan, I love good players who play the game. Stanton won’t last, and xactly what has he done to earn his pay?
Joggin’George
He earned his pay with what he did before he signed the contract. Like it or not, that’s how it works. (That’s why signing players to / taking on big contracts is dumb)
Ducky Buckin Fent
My fellow Yankee fans leave me befuddled at times, man.
Stanton, Hicks, and Sanchez are all really good players. They make *any* team in MLB better.
But, jeeez, they all engender such vitriol amongst this fan base.
Now some of you fellas want to trade Aaron Judge!?
Mercy.
I don’t get it.
I’m just stoked that we’re getting all these guys back, serious.
Tell ya what…there is not a single team in MLB that is hoping to play the Yanks in a postseason series.
Not one.
So.
Also, great news about Loiaisiga. He’s going to be a good reliever for us.
AndyMeyer
“Not a single team in MLB that is hoping to play the Yanks in a postseason series. Not one”
Boy if that isn’t delusional homer talk, I don’t know what is
Ducky Buckin Fent
Not really, @meyer.
My guess is you’re one of those dudes who’s bummed that the Yanks are getting themselves straightened out as the playoffs near.
There’s a lot of that going around.
😉
– Cole & Tanaka are an excellent duo at the top of a rotation. Thanks in part to Tanka’s brass one’s in the postseason
– 1-9 the Yankees lineup (obviously when healthy) doesn’t have a soft spot
– 6 good relief pitchers
Sorry, bro. But that team certainly has the necessary elements to go on a championship run. A week or so ago, lots of baseball fans were forecasting the Yanks to miss the playoffs and post their first losing season in decades.
Lol…as if.
Not being a homer. Just pointing out what is really pretty obvious.
Uh?
AndyMeyer
Sorry pal. Homer talk
6 good relievers? Where? Who? That vaunted bullpen has been pretty average. Ottavino has been garbage. Green was getting lit up for a while. Kanhle done. They’re hittable.
You’re going to need more than Cole and Tanaka to get through tough offenses in the playoffs. 2 starters with not much else? Good luck with that
And yes, the Yankees have a solid lineup but we never see this solid lineup because they can’t stay healthy.
So getting back to your bold, homer statement about no team in MLB wanting to play the Yankees in the postseason? I’m sure a few teams wouldn’t mind at all
AndyMeyer
And Sanchez “makes any team in MLB better??? With what? That career .237 batting average (hitting a robust .127 this year while striking out in almost half his AB)
Or is it his gold glove caliber defense?
Come on man. It’s cool to like your team and all but saying Gary Sanchez makes “any MLB team better” is ridiculous
AndyMeyer
Maybe the Pirates…..maybe 😀
Ducky Buckin Fent
Britton & Chapman are still a fearsome endgame.
Ottavino & Green have struggled this year. I’ll give you that. But they both have good stuff & excellent track records.
Holder is having another good season. Loiaisiga looks like a real weapon out of the pen.
Ottavino’s struggles and losing Kahnle hurts for sure. But the pen is still both deep & talented. That’s just fact. Hardly being a “homer” by pointing out something pretty basic & well known in baseball.
🙂
Losing Sevi & Paxton definitely hurt, as well. I’m just stating – again, the obvious! lol – that Cole is a huge postseason weapon. He can win you 2 or 3 games in a 7 game series all by himself. & Tanaka is a true Big Game pitcher.
(Also, just watched Deivi throw 7 innings of 3 run ball against the Jays – bet that rankles – uh?)
I’ll go one further in regards to our lineup. No pitcher in MLB wants any part of the Yankees when they’re healthy. There’s a reason why the Yanks have had a top 3 offense for the last few seasons.
You mentioned health. That’s been an issue. Guys are coming back every day now, however. Just threw up 20 runs this evening.
Finally on Sanchez. Firstly, those certainly *are* some ugly batting averages. Luckily, his offensive game doesn’t rely on good ole BA. He gets on base at a good clip & hits you 30+ jacks. He’s a very good hitting catcher… despite the paltry average.
He’s also not a gold glover. If you care to check on fangraphs – however – you’ll find that year in & year out he’s an above average to well above average catcher with the glove.
So, yeah. Pretty much any team.
I can certainly be a homer.
In this case, I’m just being straight up.
😉
AndyMeyer
I dig your enthusiasm and you bring stuff to the table. Glad to have the dialogue; even with the fun jabs in there! Be safe and best of the luck to you and your bombers.
I’m a Phillies fan so i can’t say much about a bullpen. Haha. It’s bad. Historically bad. And now the injury bug is hitting at the wrong time.
Ducky Buckin Fent
A Phillies* Phan?
Phun!
How is Didi looking? He was so damn good for us, man. Stepping into Jeter’s shoes. Was a blast watching him grow into such a fantastic & truly fun player.
You’ve got Joe G in the dugout, too. Good manager. You’ll always have a winning record with Joe G. I’d prefer him over Boone.
Tell ya that.
Good luck to your squad. Remain productive.
😉
* Lol…bro!, you can’t even try to tell me Philly wouldn’t take *any* of the relievers I named.
AndyMeyer
I really hope they resign Didi. He’s been solid.
I’ll take Chad Green or Loagasia on their worst days then the slop they’ve been trotting out there. It’s been so bad. Sure glad you haven’t watched any of these games that these guys have blown. You gotta feel for Joe G, JT who has had to catch those guys every night and you gotta feel bad for the offense. Top 5 scoring team in the majors.
With JT and Rhys going down with injuries it’s not looking good. Solid win against the metropolitans tonight but they lost Arrieta
to injury. Might be too much to overcome. We shall see
jekporkins
I got $20 Stanton doesn’t make it to the end of the regular season.
Shaun owens
Sad to say I agree ..I hope we are wrong
andremets
Poor Mike Ford….
Shaun owens
Poor ford , poor me paying for mlb extra innings and watching every at bat of his ..as been frustrating..
Shaun owens
So does anyone know when Domingo German can play again he was suspended 81 games but he had 63 to server this season and since it was a shortened season and he was not able to play in The last postseason could he come back for this postseason ?
This is what the said before the season was going to start
“he has already missed one postseason for the violation, German will be allowed to participate if the Yankees qualify for the 2020 postseason (though he will not be permitted to play in spring training games).”
Shaun owens
Yankees still have two top line starters and a key reliever out … even when judge comes back
Domingo German
Luis Severino
And Tommy kahnle
ShieldF123
Don’t forget Paxton
