The Reds have released outfielder Boog Powell and right-hander Alex Powers, per a team announcement. Their 60-man pool now includes 57 players.
Powell, previously with the Athletics, Rays, Mariners and Padres organizations, joined the Reds on a minor league contract last January. The 27-year-old Powell accumulated 160 plate appearances in the majors between the A’s and Mariners from 2017-18, hitting .262/.333/.383 with three home runs, but has otherwise played in the minors. As a member of the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate last season, the left-handed Powell batted .288/.391/.438 with eight homers and 14 steals over 403 PA.
Powers, 28, became a pro when the White Sox selected him in the 25th round of the 2013 draft. He had been with the Reds since 2016 and will now look for the third organization in his career, in which he has produced quality results in the minors. Powers topped out at Triple-A last season and logged a 1.98 ERA/3.22 FIP with 10.87 K/9 and 3.95 BB/9 in 27 1/3 innings.

Every franchise needs a Boog.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
The Orioles could use another one
Boog Powell the Second was actually pretty good at one time
When he played for the A’s, he lit up the O’s

Amen Lefty. He was under rated and could really crush it on those pitching oriented Weaver led teams.
How much would a guy like Boog earn today on the open market? man.. So many stars of yesterday got peanuts and backups today, worth nothing get millions.

First game I ever saw was before the DH began. Sonny Siebert hit two homers into the screen his first two at bats. Sox up 4-1 in the ninth, two on and Boog was up. He literally just flicked his wrists half way and on a check swing, the ball was caught deep in Fenway’s triangle. I and every other Sox fan in attendance took a deep breath. Although I did not have a radio or TV, I can still “hear” Ned Martin’s “mercy”.

Good story looie!

Lefty, Was that game in Oakland or Baltimore? If Baltimore, maybe he just needs the power of his namesake BBQ to power him

Thanks. Another part of the story is non-baseball. Went with my uncle and cousin and left my aunt and other cousin at this huge Sears where they thought they could shop for hours. Thankfully the game then was much quicker because it was just an outlet type store that only took up half of the main floor. The other floors were office space and they were stranded after twenty minutes. That ride home was funny for a little kid listening to my aunt yell at my uncle for the entire ride back to CT.

Eppler should snag Powers. Grab as many arms as possible and hope to get a couple to pan out.

That has been the only true gameplan shown the last 5 years. It hasn’t worked at all.
HalosHeavenJJ
It can’t be the only plan. Need to draft and develop arms, pick up some free agents. But every now and then useful pieces like Robles emerge from this.

Look at the Salt Lake stats for the last couple years. You’ll see a ton of castoff types, and very few internal prospects that were more than filler. So much so, it has often seemed that the Angels were claiming half the pitchers available on waivers or that hit free agency
And between all the claims and the organization breaking every arm they get a hold of, the sheer volume of pitchers used is usually insane. Last year there were 53 guys taking the mound for the Bees, compared to division mates ABQ at 32, LV at 39 and ELP at 40.
Eppler’s sole philosophy on the minors as a whole, but especially pitching, seems to be trying to find lightning in recycled or damaged bottles. And all while he ironically doesn’t mind letting other teams pick through and take what they want out of his drafted arms (case in point, the 4 solid arms shipped out for just 2 years of lightning chances on Bundy, or sending minor league AS Ervin Rodriguez in the package for then high priced rental, Upton)
Eppler needs to go (as does Moreno though, if we truly want anything at all to change)

My goodness Boog Powell has been playing since that late 1960s ! I’m surprised he has lasted this long! That has to be a record.

Look how much weight he’s lost though. Easily best shape of his life. No longer looks anything like a Bloody Mary
