The Red Sox have claimed catcher Deivy Grullon from the Phillies, per an announcement from Philadelphia. The Phillies also outrighted hurler Reggie McClain to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Grullon, 24, was designated for assignment Monday even though he was one of the Phillies’ top 30 prospects at Baseball America over the past few seasons. To this point, however, Grullon has only taken nine MLB plate appearances (all last season). He’s the owner of an impressive .283/.354/.496 slash with 21 home runs in 457 Triple-A plate appearances, though.
McClain was another Monday DFA for the Phillies, who claimed him from the Mariners in January. The 27-year-old entered the pros as a 13th-rounder of the M’s in 2016, and he made his major league debut this season with 5 1/3 innings of three-earned run ball with two strikeouts, three walks and nine hits allowed.
DarkSide830
alas…good claim. surprised he made it though the whole NL though.
DarkSide830
happy McClain passed though. we’ve outrighted a few guys recently that id like to see stick around. many didnt do well this year but could be nice project guys.

I’m disappointed that the Bucs didn’t grab him. Must’ve cost too much. /$

I don’t think waivers distinguishes by league anymore.
DarkSide830
since when?
pasha2k
I don’t think the RS hadta wait for the whole league after their placing.
qbass187
Right?!
Mike Agogliati
Good pickup if he plays like he does in MLB the Show 20.
ruckus727
Seriously. Dude rakes.
wild bill tetley
The guy has swung the bat well in the minors. Deserves a look

Why Phillies would designate him is puzzling, given the likelihood that Realmuto tests free agency.
pasha2k
The Phillies moves puzzle a lotta ppl.
ctyank7
You mean Dumb and Dumber (Klentak and MacFail) had trouble evaluating talent??
brown trout fisherman
Odd move for Phillies
mlbnyyfan
There is no way Realmuto leaves Philadelphia unless I hope Yankees sign him and unload Gary is Scary in every way Sanchez

Mets if ownership changes in time. Imagine a NY bidding war where the Yankees could fall short. Doubt it happens as even wealthy teams are watching their wallets but it is interesting to consider.
ctyank7
JT to the Mets. Incoming deep pocketed owner Cohen wants to make a splash.
jhiphop
Yeah, not sure what their backup plan is if JTR leaves. Shows a lot of confidence in resigning him

Phillies have made terrible moves over the last two years.

It feels like Dan Duquette is in charge again with all of these strange value signings of scrubs

The Red Sox can not spend the most every single year….That is not a sustainable way to win. The signings help deepen the roster, and you do not have to score big on every signing.
DD depleted the system. What other choices did Bloom have to infuse a greater quantity of players into a shallow player pool.
looiebelongsinthehall
I don’t know how many have to be exposed for the Rule 5 draft if all these pickups are kept. That said the deeper the system, the better problems to have. Some might have been secured just to have more movable options come trading season.
4WSsince04
All of the prospects traded for will be on the 40 man if exposed to rule 5. There will be two spot still left open even after the new players are added. Those 2 spots can go for FAs if signed before the rule 5 draft. San Diego did not have room on their 40 man for the two players they traded to Boston, so they needed to trade, and Moreland besides being a really good player gives them a trading chip over the winter or deadline next year. Sustainability requires depth and RS have very, very little.
The majority of the pitchers currently getting hammered each night will be DFA at season’s end ….
datrain021
I’m still surprised they couldn’t of swung a small trade inside of DFAing him
destined.miner
Impressed by Bloom. Low key a nice pickup, could be a future trade piece or an option next year behind the plate.
DonC.
Can’t believe Knapp is a better keep.
B-Strong
I had a feeling the Sox would pick him up.
bobtillman
This is one of those “might be something else going on here”…not that Grulon is some kind of budding star, but a catcher, with 3 options, rated at least adequate defensively, and whose shown some pop, and is only 25…..seems he would have been worth more than the waiver price.
TJECK109
Good to see the Pirates wouldn’t take a chance on him.

DD took big steps to make the playoffs and World Series in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The Marlins and Tigers were horrible for years after his firing. I enjoyed those three years and would not trade them 11 years of no title like NYY, but the aftermath is messy.
Each WS win required an 80 percent turnover in RS rosters between 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018.
The years 2012, 2014, and 2015 were not fun, but if that is what it took to win the next title I am on board. I have been a RS fan since 1971 and those 33 years of not winning a single WS while watching teams with less talent win was something thankfully I will not have to be alive to endure again….
