The Phillies will place first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day injured list with a left UCL injury, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. In better news for the club, catcher J.T. Realmuto (hip flexor) will avoid the IL, while right-hander Zack Wheeler (finger) should return to the mound this week.
The Hoskins news continues a rough few days for the Phillies, who have dropped three in a row – including a 6-2 defeat to the Marlins on Monday. The 27-year-old Hoskins hasn’t played since Saturday, when he suffered a forearm injury, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to take the field again this season. Time’s running out in 2020 for him and the Phillies, who are an even 23-23 but are still in possession of a playoff spot in the National League.
If Philly does break its eight-year playoff drought this season, it’ll have Hoskins to thank to some extent. Although Hoskins is stuck in an 0-for-10 slump, he has slashed a rather effective .245/.384/.503 (138 wRC+) with 10 home runs in 185 plate appearances. That’ll be tough production for the Phillies to replace in the season’s final couple weeks, especially considering Hoskins has played almost every game at first for the team this base. Otherwise, only the now-gone Neil Walker and the historically light-hitting Phil Gosselin have lined up there for the Phillies.

10-days. Yikes. Welp. Post-season drought continues. Mets can knock the Phils to 5th. Season ruined in one week. Horrendous time for stars to get hurt. Fingers crossed for some pitching and JT in the offseason.
DarkSide830
still a well better team then the Mets and we’re still in a playoff spot. cool ya jets Von.
VonPurpleHayes
You’re crazy if you think this lifeless and injury-battered team is going to win that Mets series. Most important series of the year they lost 5 of 7, and looked completely defeated in those 5. If they can’t win there, how are they going to beat the Mets? Sorry. It’s over. 3 late-season collapses in a row. They get a slight pass here because of key injuries, but it’s still tough to swallow as a fan.
Orel Saxhiser
If the Reds win the second game of their doubleheader, they will tie the Mets for 11th. So it will be the Phillies, Giants. Rockies, Brewers, Mets, and Reds vying for two spots. That’s six teams separated by three games. If I was picking two, it would be the Reds and Giants. It would be Phillies’ luck for Kapler’s Giants to beat them out of a playoff spot.
Orel Saxhiser
VonPurpleHayes, the Phils outscored them 36-34 yet lost five of the seven. Hats off to the Marlins. Considering all they’ve been through, it’s hard for anyone else to blame injuries. The Marlins have had 17 guys make their MLB debut. After that 29-9 game, it looked like their run was over. I figured the Phils would bury them. Now please beat the Mets.
DarkSide830
the fact is this team always loses to the Marlins, and they probably never wolnt. im not going to say its all sunshine and roses, but the Phillies are also 4-2 vs the Mets this year, and even through this bad stretch for the Phillies the Mets – who have plenty of issues of their own – are several games back.
VonPurpleHayes
It’s tough to feel bad for the Marlins when the Phillies just played 5 double headers in 15 days. Especially because the Marlins covid cases were a result of their team’s own irresponsible actions. That being said, you’re right about their resilience and depth. No team has had to replace more players than the Marlins, and they persevered.

VPH, wish the downvote was here…Lifeless is a tough term…The Phils are playing with 4 back-ups PLUS marchan…Have been a fan since the mid 70’s and I die a bit each day they lose, but this squad w/ a good manger….is progressing. Agree w/ you that it is tough to swallow…
VonPurpleHayes
cpdpoet, I don’t see any sogns of progression. And their former manager is doing better with the Giants. The Phillies looked lifeless in this series. Can’t deny that.
OofAndYikes
@von
Let us know when you find proof that they were irresponsible, going out isn’t a reason. Until then, good series, bottompheeder. :*
cpdpoet
…..really you’re offering a kapler reference…..arghhhh….
If you want to dig and I acquiesce, are you comparing a mercurial talent of Harper to Schmidt, saying they need a Rose…?
VonPurpleHayes
That’s fair. It was rather widely “reported” by so called insiders, but I never saw anything other than gossip. So I should hedge my comment a bit. Apologies.
cpdpoet
Hey VPH, I read everyday (rarely comment) and know you are passionate and well informed….don’t get beat down……This 2020 version is trying, the bench is better than 2019, just not 4 starters in the wings good….
VonPurpleHayes
Yea. You’re right. Shouldn’t post so soon after these losses. Haha.
Orel Saxhiser
Being better than the Mets is no badge of honor. It might not even be true. Both lack pitching, are terrible defensively, and have poor organizational; depth., It’ll be interesting to see if Realmuto signs with either or goes someplace else. He’s good but will turn 30 in March on my birthday. How many years do you commit to a 30-year-old catcher?
MikeyHammer
The age may not be as big a factor with Realmuto, he’s always been a great athlete, a move to a different position will be a possibility down the road.
jdrushton
If the NL adopts the DH on a permanent basis, that’s one possible position *g*. First base is another.
I still put the Phil’s as the favorites to sign JTR.
cpdpoet
……from all accounts he is a “locker room” guy as well. Hope/pray he resigns…His skill set plays at c/1b/dh for the term of a potential 6yr deal…

This team is a mess. The bullpen is epically horrible. There isn’t a lead that is safe. If Klentak isn’t gone this offseason we should look forward to another decade of futility.
VonPurpleHayes
I give Klentak credit for addressing the problem, but none of his moves ever work out. Phelps for example was excellent in Milwaukee, but is horrendous here. Everyone wants Klentak gone, but I’m not sure he’s the problem.
DarkSide830
willing to bet the gloves come off this offseason and Middleton lets Klentak have a bit more financial rope. a few contracts come off and there should be some more room on top of that, so hopefully they can make a run at some more RP help + other varied needs.
cpdpoet
…..and to quote someone else….It’s darick hall time….and someone else @garlick (to jettison) as well…At this juncture marchan is up, why not moniak, he has the D chops and then damon jones…..This season is at more than a tipping point, am as angry as the rest of -us- Phillies fans…..
DarkSide830
Jones is a name that could help, though Rosso’s early struggles are a cautionary tale there. neither was too great in AAA last year and may still not be ready. Moniak probably isnt ready yet but they will need to protect him anyway and he’s better then Garlick, so heck with it.
Loud Noises!
I will ask in here since I can’t seem to find it elsewhere does anyone have a ballpark idea of recovery time from a UCL injury?
DarkSide830
depends on the injury? tear? a while. strain? less so.
Rsox
probably should have kept Walker. Maybe they should see if Harper can play 1B…
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Sure, bad outcome in Florida, but without the walking wounded, what could we really expect?
This season was doomed from the onset when our inept GM put together a bullpen of who-the-heck-are-these-guys? Okay, he tried to fix it by trading for relievers, but let’s face it, like last year, he went bargain basement shopping while others GMs took the elevator to the luxury department. To wit, no Archie Bradley, no Trevor Rosenthal or Blake Treinen, relievers other teams added during or before the season started.
Gotta hope Cigar Guy sees the error he made giving Klentac that under-the-radar three-year extension last March and gives him his pink slip the day after the WS ends.
Gonna be a struggle to make the post-season dance. And even if we do, with this bullpen, we don’t figure to get very far. Could easily win a three-game series with Nola and Wheeler going one-two. After that, it’s a crap shoot in five or seven game match ups becaue we’ll have to use Arrieta and/or Eflin.
We have no in house replacement for Hoskins unless Jay Bruce can get back sooner than later. Maybe move Bohm to 1B, Segura back to 3B and say a rosary or two that Kingery can be a productive 2B? Ugh, better make that a dozen rosaries and better light a few extra candles, too.
HalfBaked McBride
God help me, I still believe in these Phillies.
YES the Hoskins injury and timing sucks
YES the bullpen is a dumpster fire
and YES 2020 has been a non stop crotch punch for all of us….
Look, the Mets and Blue Jays are beatable….we just gotta go 4 and 3 in the next 7 and then the woeful Nats are on tap and they’ve all but given up.
We also dodged a bullet with JT’s hip….So….Put JT at 1B (easier on his body, for now) and slot Marchan/Knapp into the C spot. Nola/Wheeler are still a great 1/2 and Eflin has shown some actual consistency…..maybe Arrieta digs deep and pitches like a man who still has some personal pride and dignity and we’ll see what’s what in a couple weeks.
I trust Girardi to pick bullpen pieces that can work and maybe this team can finish strong.
Heck, the Marlins finish with 7 in a row against the Braves and Yanks…so who knows!!
Go Phils!!
