The Philadelphia Phillies optioned Adonis Medina after Sunday’s game, the team announced. Medina was called up on Sunday to make his major league debut. In the spot start, the 23-year-old took the loss while yielding two earned runs on three hits in four innings against the Blue Jays. Medina also struck out four and walked three in the 84-pitch outing. The Phillies needed an extra arm after a doubleheader on Friday, which they swept.
Philadelphia now has seven games remaining. They trail the Marlins by 1 game for 2nd place and a guaranteed playoff spot, though they also have a half game lead for the top wild card position. They will finish the season with seven games on the road, four in Washington and a final weekend series at Tampa Bay.
The Phillies will probably need an additional starter to pitch one half of a doubleheader against the Nationals on Tuesday, which would be too soon for Medina to return. RamĂłn Rosso got the call as the 29th man in a similar situation last week. Jake Arrieta and Spencer Howard are both on the injured list, leaving Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Zach Eflin, and Vince Velasquez in the rotation.

If baseball doesn’t work out, Adonis Medina is a great name for an adult film star.

BP game, VV, callup. honestly very pleased we even got 2 of those games.

Took 3 out of 4 with only 1 real starter. May have saved the season. Going to come down to the wire.

David Hale to the rescue. Well, he was a starter in the minors. I know, i know, he may bot be stretched out, but take the shot.
DarkSide830
he was a good starter with Atlanta. struggled with Colorado but that is to be expected. i believe we have at least two years of control over hale beyond this one, so he could be a cheap option to fill starts. i dont know why he hasnt stuck since he left Colorado though.

Overall, Medina looked like he could eventually stick in the Majors. Obviously super shaky in the first couple innings, but he persevered. I say pencil him in as a #4/5 starter next season…Put money into JT/ss/and the bullpen

They still need one more really strong starter after Nola and Wheeler. Baur would be perfect. Mike Minor would be an excellent reclamation project.
VonPurpleHayes
Yea. Essentially they can give Arrieta’s money to another topline starter. That’s the hope at least. Medina had a pretty decent breaking ball. I think he’ll make the rotation in the next few years.

i dont trust Bauer from year to year and his personality kinda annoys me. id prefer Tanaka. will cost solidly less and he’s more consistent
VonPurpleHayes
I’d take either one, but I don’t disagree with your take on Bauer. They don’t need to be splurging on an ace type of guy. They have Nola and Wheeler. Plenty of #3 and #4 options out there that will vastly improve this rotation.

As a Yankees fan, idk if I’d label Tanaka as consistent. I mean I guess since he is consistently great in the playoffs, but his regular season performance over the last few years has been kind of all over the place.
Also, as much as I want the Yanks to resign him, you have to take his elbow into account. It’s held up all these years, but you have to consider that he might eventually end up needing surgery.
