The Padres announced they’ve activated first baseman Eric Hosmer from the 10-day injured list. He’s been on the shelf since September 8 due to a fractured finger. Additionally, San Diego recalled rookie right-hander Luis Patiño from the alternate training site. Righty Luis Perdomo and catcher Francisco Mejía were optioned out in corresponding roster moves.
Hosmer has been fantastic through 128 plate appearances this season, hitting .288/.344/.552 with eight home runs. That’s a notable step up from the roughly average offensive production the big ticket free agent acquisition managed his first two seasons in Southern California. The 33-19 Padres are essentially locked in as the fourth seed in the National League, but Hosmer will have a little more than a week to ramp back up before the start of the postseason.
Patiño has scuffled in his first 14.2 MLB innings, but he’s one of the game’s brightest young pitching talents. He’ll make his first MLB start tonight against the Mariners. Patiño and Perdomo could each be options for the Friars out of the bullpen come playoff time. Mejía is San Diego’s third catcher following the deadline acquisitions of Austin Nola and Jason Castro.

Speaking of padres what’s up with tatis?
DrDan75
He’s just slumping a little bit All hitters slump from time to time, even the great ones.
Jasona9
Jayce Tingler stated that his “slump” isn’t health related. He hit a double last night against Seattle. He’s bouncing back
oldmansteve
Typical regression. Has had 7 bad games in the last 9. That’s the sort of thing that happens over the course of a season. It’ll sway in the other direction eventually.
imindless
Seagers pretty close to overtaking him in war
oldmansteve
so?
Edit: I just looked. Seager is no where close to overtaking Tatis. He is a full win behind him in Fwar and a half win behind him in Bwar with less than 10 games left. Why lie?
Magnum
Way to keep em honest.
imindless
1.8 war to 2.1 War on baseball ref not sure what crack you’re smoking but I want some. How about them yankees! Seager has 30 points higher in average and obp and 2 off in homeruns
pinstripes17
don’t care, didn’t ask, tatis still better
imindless
Hes not though. Seager this year has been The most consistent Hitter on dodgers. I just remember padres fans saying tatis is supremely better than seager and he simply is not. 0-12 in series against dodgers.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@imindless – Here is the test. You are starting a MLB team and you have to choose between Seager or Tatis as your shortstop. Who are you picking?
Joggin’George
Tatis. No doubt.
imindless
I’m taking seager. Easy. Tatis isn’t a great defender. Seager was that guy before the injury and this is his first full season after recovery. Even when injured he still is a top 5 ss in baseball. The guy I’m not sold on is bellinger hoping we trade him instead of extending him.
Joggin’George
I said Tatis, but that’s based on stats only and age with the assumption that Tatis will improve or at least stay at this level for a while. But really I’d have to see what scouts say to make a better decision. Time will tell who has the better career moving forward.
throwinched10
Mejia seems to have lost his chance. The catching duties will move from Nola/Castro to Canpusano.
Afk711
I get a strange feeling the Rays will do something dumb and trade Meadows to the Padres so they can get Mejia as a part of the package.
Hosmer for HOF
It’s a good point but I think they’ll weigh him through one more half season next year and trade him pre-deadline if he can’t hit as good/better than Nola. They are FAR from finding their future catcher unless they double down for 2021 and chase Realmuto in FA with some cash.
This team wants Nola to play a pure utility role like Austin Barnes. I mean he’s barely played catcher in his career and while he has fit as a nice safety net, they’ll probably keep searching via prospects.. Padres no doubt will let Castro go after this year, and then Nola/Mejia/Campusano in a three way catcher competition next year.
ukpadre
Mejia has had his chance. Time and again he’s shown he can’t catch well and can’t hit either. Busted trade.
Joggin’George
I see how you could say that, but he’s really only been given significant opportunities in one season, last year, and he’s still young. That being said, his minor league stats aren’t even that great and, yea, his D is awful. But with the Padres in the thick of it, no room for patience right now.
DrDan75
Campusano is the latest “catcher of the future” for the Padres. Nola will likely take over Greg Garcia’s role after GG hits FA this winter. Castro was brought in as a rental, but signing him might make sense in the short term.
I don’t see them chasing Realmuto, and Mejia clearly needs more development.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
They went hard after JTR two winters ago despite already having Hedges and Mejia on the roster and signed Hosmer despite already having Myers and Naylor. He very well could go after JTR.
CNichols
I think they got Nola specifically to avoid having to pay up for a good catcher like Realmuto. Nola has a bunch of control remaining and if he stops producing they can cheaply cut bait. Realmuto is probably going to get like 6Y/$150M on his next deal and if he declines as he gets older then there’s a huge risk of getting burned on the deal.
Padres would be better off taking that $150 million and putting it towards a Tatis extension.
Jasona9
Francisco Mejia? Is it TOO LATE to get Brad Hand back? Bad Trade
