Rounding up some injury news from around the National League:
- Rockies’ star third baseman Nolan Arenado was held out of the lineup today with a left shoulder injury, per the Athletic’s Nick Groke (via Twitter). Colorado is hoping he’ll avoid an injured list stint, says Groke. Arenado’s obviously of immense importance if the 21-24 Rockies are to erase a game and half deficit and get into the postseason.
- The Mets activated lefty reliever Steven Matz from the injured list this afternoon. He’s been out about two weeks with discomfort in his throwing shoulder. It has been a disappointing season for Matz, who got bumped from the rotation after five poor starts before leaving his first relief appearance with the aforementioned injury.
- Reds’ center fielder Nick Senzel has been on the injured list for undisclosed reasons since August 19. He’s nearing a return, manager David Bell told reporters, including Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Twitter link). Indeed, it’s possible Senzel returns for tomorrow’s doubleheader against the Pirates. The 25-year-old is hitting .244/.327/.489 in 53 plate appearances this year.
- The Giants are placing right-handed reliever Trevor Gott on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation (via Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle). It has been a nightmarish season for the 28-year-old. After seemingly breaking out in 2019, Gott has allowed 13 runs (all earned) in 11.2 innings with eight strikeouts and walks apiece.

Gott should have been DFAd two weeks ago. He’s terrible.
Francys01
He pitched well for the Giants especially in the second half last season.
5TUNT1N
As I tend to agree with you the organization was clearly running him out so much to create a trade option before the deadline that as you can see by all the earned runs did not work out. BUT In his defense he has been ok since blowing those 3 saves and giving up almost all of not all of his er this season.
scottn59c
He needs a fresh start, whether that’s a new season or a new ballclub.
VANTABLACK
He’s hurt just in time to not repeat his terrible pitching against the A’s- personally costing us 2 games.

Man, think about that once-great Mets rotation. Matzo is still trying to make it, I don’t know what happened to the Dark Knight and all the injuries. When they beat the Cubs in the 2015 NLCS, I thought they would be formidable for a long time.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
Hopefully Matz can become the next Andrew Miller, but I have my doubts.

Those guys don’t come along that often, and I don’t think the comp is relevant, given the differences in their bodies. But good luck.
WarkMohlers
Not sure how he will be the next Andrew Miler besides being a failed lefty starter turned reliever. Miller’s sinker is rarely used and his slider is top-notch. Matz has a decent sinker and rarely uses his mediocre slider.
Maybe Matz will become a decent pen piece, but besides being a lefty in a bullpen he won’t be comparable to Andrew Miller.
MarlinsFanBase
When you say “once-great Mets rotation”, you must mean just one time for a short period because they haven’t been a great pitching staff for more than short spurts. They have been overrated.
You can’t expect any pitching staff of guys who haven’t shown multiple years of success to be formidable for a long time. Matz has had a mediocre career. Harvey never had a completely full season of Ace performance (just parts of a season). Wheeler has been average at best with the Mets, with some spurts of success. Syndergaard has been hurt more often than been an elite pitcher. deGrom has been the only great one.
One great pitcher does not make a pitching staff great.

congrats, albert!

Yeah…nothing to do with this post, but Pujols hit #660 today, tying Willie Mays. You know, for the fist 10 years of his career, while with the Cardinals, Albert was as great of a player as I have ever seen. He was Mike Trout. But then he signs that big contract, probably got off the juice, and was never the same.
Vizionaire
yeah, that’s called aging. you’ll get it someday, too! on the other hand, angels received extra $1 billion tv money for signing nim, fair trade!
WarkMohlers
I doubt Pujols was on the juice. Although the conspiracy theories about him being older than he is are starting to make sense (Octavio Dotel mention a while back).
With age issues I can’t fault the player and his production was otherworldly no matter what his age. Not like he was a 30 year old man playing little leaguers.
More importantly. Having a 30 year old play little league would be something I’d pay to watch. Just the bat flips would be worth it.
Vizionaire
yup! me too! i also question why would cards have hidden ‘his real age’ all this time if he was using fake one.
WarkMohlers
I don’t think it was the team hiding it or even the family. He came to US well before he was drafted. I have gone through getting citizenship in another country and I can say paperwork is beyond a hassle and mistakes get made (my polish birth certificate had my fathers name wrong and it was a huge hassle).
I was just talking more to his significant decline in production.

And maybe, just maybe…there’s some truth about the age rumors and that’s why the Twigs and Sparrows let him walk in FA…
rct
As great as Pujols was, it’s not really accurate to say that he was Mike Trout. I say this not as a slight to Pujols, it’s just that Trout is almost in a class of his own, and is much better defensively and on the basepaths than Pujols in his prime.
Monkey’s Uncle
Gott has allowed 7 homers in 11.2 innings pitched. I give him credit: that’s hard to do.

With the silence from the Reds on Senzel’s injury makes one wonder if his vertigo has returned…
bo23
It’s Covid-19
scvanguard1
If that’s the case, why is it all hush hush?
bot
It’s the vertigo. What night have been….

Covid…people do recover fully from Vertigo you know. It’s mainly an inner ear issue…

Since we are talking about greatest we’ve ever seen… Steroids aside (so I’m aware he juiced,so save ur “he took steroids”posts). But, in his era, most of em juiced so that evens the playing field..Anyway, Barry Bonds was second to none. Go look at his career stats. 73 hrs one year. 40-40 one year. Batting title one year. 6 MVPs, 9 time silver slugger award, 5 +gold gloves. Obliterated OBP records. Bonds was intentionally walked more than Babe Ruth & Hank Arron..combined. Only player in history of baseball to have over 500 career SBs & steals & All-time HR king. Played in a park that HRs aren’t easy to come by. Most feared hitter ever. Saw maybe 2 or 3 pitches to hit a game.. In BP in Colorado Todd Helton said Barry hit the ball out of the stadium. Literally. Farthest ball Helton said he’s ever seen. Also, Bonds was onced intentionally walked..with the bases loaded. And he punched teammate & pornstar Jeff Kent for saying his hr went farther than Barry’s that game. Was he a cocky? Yes. Did he juice? Yes. Was he a dick? Yes. But..best baseball player I’ve seen
titanic struggle
And I hope he sits just outside of the HOF and rots away…

That’s all anyone can ever say about Bonds. You can’t deny his accomplishments, so you just give an emotional response with no evidence or facts. I get it, he was a dick. His job was not to get you to like him. His job was to mash. Therefore, he is very good at what he does. Arguably, did it better than anyone
titanic struggle
He was a fantastic ballplayer, there’s no question about that, and early in his career he was phenomenal, I was at the 90 playoffs against the Reds who I’ve been a lifelong fan of, and the Pirates had a stacked team and he was the one I feared most, Bonilla was a close second and then Slyce…riddle me this though. With all of the talent he had…WHY? Why did he feel the need to juice? And the same goes for Clemmons, Sosa and Palmerio…I’m a traditionalist…and it disgusts me..
2020ball
Ditto. Greatest pure hitter I’ve ever seen. His legacy is rightly tainted, but I always loved watching him.
titanic struggle
Jr is the best player I’ve ever seen…maybe that’s why Bonds juiced…he wanted to be the man, when Jr was…
Richard H.
Jr. was amazing. Again, yes Bonds juiced, but he was a beast. His career stats are fascinating. But yes, Griffey was phenomenal.
jimij
Senzel always has something wrong, I say get rid of him, in the couple of years he has played he’s very injury prone, he’s good sometimes but they should try 2 get something for him while they can
earmbrister
Thank god you’re not the Reds’ GM.
Senzel will be an All-Star, sooner than later

He will be an Allstar…
