The Mets have selected right-hander Erasmo Ramirez’s contract, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com tweets. The team opened 40-man space for Ramirez when it designated outfielder Billy Hamilton for assignment.
The 30-year-old Ramirez, whom the Mets signed to a minor league contract in June, could now be in line to appear in the majors for the ninth consecutive season. Going back to 2012, the former Ray, Mariner and Red Sox has recorded a passable 4.40 ERA/4.58 FIP with 6.98 K/9 and 2.56 BB/9 in 640 2/3 innings and 193 appearances (92 starts), but his stock has fallen over the past couple years. Ramirez struggled to a 6.50 ERA/6.69 FIP across 45 2/3 frames with Seattle in 2018 and only totaled three innings with Boston last season.
Now that he’s coming back to the majors, it’s unclear whether Ramirez will fill a starting or bullpen role for the Mets, whose rotation, despite impressive peripherals, owns the majors’ seventh-worst ERA (5.25). Only Jacob deGrom, David Peterson and Seth Lugo (who has made a pair of short starts since leaving the bullpen) have done well to prevent runs for the club’s starting staff this year. Rick Porcello, Michael Wacha, Robert Gsellman and the currently injured Steven Matz have had immense difficulty keeping runs off the board, on the other hand.

i really dont see why the Mets expected to pull through with Porcello and Wacha. the former has been largely mediocre at best outside of his Cy Young year, and Wacha has been wildly inconsistent in recent years.

Relief pitching – a high risk operation
VonPurpleHayes
I think they thought Matz would step up, but thar didn’t work out.
DarkSide830
and im sure Thor needing TJ threw a wrench into things, but i feel like even if DeGrom, Thor, and Matz all stayed healthy and effective, (which should never be assumed given their track records) that backend would be very risky.
VonPurpleHayes
Yea. This team has huge holes, but so does most of the division. Going to be an interesting off season.

I think they knew he was having TJS. They signed Porcello and Wacha but in typical Mets fashion the idiot waited forever to have it which means he will be a FA before he returns
Roll
dont forget they also had stroman before he opted out. So Wacha and Porcello was supposed to hold down 5 and long man.
Degrom – Thor – Stroman – Matz – Porcello – Wacha – Pederson sounds pretty decent as porcello was supposed to eat innings with decent chance of winning. .
VonPurpleHayes
Much better, but that back end is awful.
DarkSide830
yeah true, Stroman was there as well

World Series here they come – because prior to June there were only 1500 better players to make a teams 60 man pool, than Ramirez…………..

Soon, teams will be activating bat boys and ball girls.

Mets starters except for deGROM have been bad … PORCELLO is the only starter to make all his starts. STROMAN Played Them got service time while on IL then opted out
If He was so Worried about COVID he would have opted out before camp started: ALL MOUTH

I don’t understand moving Lugo out of the bullpen to be an opener (which is what he has been so far).
Mpicc33
That was bad but at least he’s performing well in the limited time… there’s no reason gsellman and whoever is worse out of porcello/wacha (they both are terrible) should be in the rotation over Peterson… outside of degrom he’s their most consistent started and the morons put him in the bullpen in favor of gsellman said under 2 inning starts… it’s like they’re actively trying to get fired when Cohen takes over
jonnyzuck
He’s slowly building up to a full starter’s load, in 2 or 3 more starts he should be pretty close to fully stretched out. Now you can certainly criticize moving their best reliever to the rotation mid season but he’s at least more than just an opener
Mpicc33
The building up part is fair i just don’t think he’s effective as a starter but in 2-3 starts the season will be over in a shortened season it’s not really time for that… at least in the bullpen he’s reliable and does a solid job but since he’s been starting he’s had to dial back to save some to work deeper and he’s getting shelled… if they just wanted to use him for 1-2 inninga then turn to wacha I think that would be much better for the team since wacha is struggling the most… if they are worried about Peterson throwing to much limit him to 5 innings a start… I didn’t love lugo starting but at least he’s giving them a solid 4 innings right now since he was already throwing 2+ innings every other day… just seems like they’re scrambling to save their jobs and are going to destroy gsellman’s and lugos arm by pulling this switch mid season after a long layoff but you’re point is fair
