The Mariners have claimed right-hander Ian Hamilton off waivers from the White Sox, per an announcement from Seattle. The White Sox designated Hamilton for assignment Sept. 18.
Thanks in part to shoulder problems, the 25-year-old Hamilton – who attended high school and college in Washington state – hasn’t taken the mound since Aug. 11. So far this season, he has thrown four innings of two-run ball with five walks against four strikeouts. In all, between this season and his debut in 2018, Hamilton has tossed 12 frames, given up seven runs (six earned), and totaled nine strikeouts against seven walks. The former 11th-round pick (2016) didn’t pitch at all in the majors last season on account of shoulder and jaw injuries.
While his MLB career hasn’t gone that well so far, there’s little harm in taking a chance on Hamilton from the Mariners’ perspective. After all, Hamilton remains a promising flamethrower who was dominant at the Triple-A level as recently as 2018. That year, Hamilton put up a 1.71 ERA/2.76 FIP and notched 9.57 K/9, 1.37 BB/9 and a 46.8 percent groundball rate in 26 1/3 innings.

Not happy about losing Ian but I think I speak for all of WS nation when I wish him all the luck in the world!
Idioms for Idiots

I agree. I really thought he had a chance of being their future closer (or at least a late inning option). Just goes to show you never know how prospects will turn out.
Best of luck to Ian, hopefully he does well in Seattle. Smart pickup by the M’s.

Dont understand why the SOX feel the need to let go these prospects.. i think its plain stupid. is Hahn making these calls ?
Stevil
This makes a ton of sense for Seattle who have roster space to spare and a need for relievers.
BuddyBoy
Nothing wrong with this one and it could end up being a steal for the Mariners. Go COUGS!
DarkSide830
good pickup

“Come one, come all to the Dipoto Show.”
Plenty of space in the BP and lots of opportunity for development and promotion for the young gunslingers. Nice pick up with little risk and high reward!

Another Hahn decision with a prospect that makes no sense.
kroeg49
Totally agree. Hamilton might turn out to be a stud reliever.

Hahn making cost savings moves or what ? No other team letting go young talent at this rate. Are we going back to the Kenny Williams way ? Sign washed up aging veterans ? Maybe we are seeing if we have another TATIS to unload?

The Marlins are going to the playoffs but the Mariners are not. That pisses me off to watch teams fall to the lowest team in the game only to rise up and make the postseason before the Mariners. Dipoto did great with the rebuild at first but then he went overboard and took it too far. Now he wants the Mariners to stay in a perpetual rebuild and keep the team stuck. Trade Dipoto! Wouldn’t that be ironic?
USNMariner
I don’t know what team you’ve been watching but the core group in M’s Land isn’t going anywhere.
The kids at the Major level have and are proving and improving themselves every game whether it’s a win or loss. Pieces are falling into place at a good rate and there’s definitely a sense of camaraderie among the kids that’s infectious. These guys are fun to watch and with a few tweaks and additions, i.e BP they’re only going to get better.
Or would you rather sign/watch high priced aging veterans get to the brink of success, fail and be stuck paying out for years more of failure??
Let the kids play. They’ve proven they can compete, LET THEM PLAY.

The Mariners would likely be in the playoffs if Dipoto would have kept Taijuan Walker and Austin Nola. Instead they were traded away for more prospects. The Mariners already had a stacked farm system. They weren’t trades we needed to make. Let the kids play? Really? Ya think? Dipoto only feels needed when he believes he needs to make a trade. He wanted the team to tank so he could get another draft pick too. I’m not the enemy. I want the Mariners to win now. Dipoto keeps trying to be like other teams to try and emulate their success instead of blazing his own trail. First he wanted the team to be like the Yankees, then the Astros and now we’re the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dipoto didn’t beleive in his team this year and it shows

MLB is a copy-cat league. Where a team finds a formula for extended success other teams follow. Building a MLB foundation for extended LONG TERM success means stacking your farm for the day the current MLB level is priced out and leaves via trade or contract expiration. Your desire to see this team “win now” is a great idea but a MLB philosophy that is quickly being left behind. Unless you want this team to be a $$Money Ball$$ team. And even that MLB philosophy is no longer being embraced by the majority of front office personnel or fans.
And comparing THIS squad to the Pirates…PLEASE!!! NO comparison at all!!!
