7:46pm: deGrom is dealing with a right hamstring spasm, the team announced.
7:06pm: Mets ace Jacob deGrom left his start against the Phillies on Wednesday after two innings, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer was among those to report. The reason for deGrom’s exit isn’t yet known, but he met with trainers after his final inning. The Mets then replaced deGrom with right-hander Michael Wacha.
DeGrom departed his outing after yielding three earned runs, making it his worst start of 2020. The back-to-back NL Cy Young winner entered Wednesday in strong contention for the award again with a 1.67 ERA/1.96 FIP and 13.17 K/9 against 2.17 BB/9 over 54 innings. Prior to Wednesday, deGrom hadn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his starts this season.
There would be no replacing deGrom for the Mets if he has to miss time, but the fact that they went into Wednesday at 21-27 makes it unlikely they’ll earn a playoff trip, anyway. With that in mind, the bigger question may be how a deGrom injury would impact the NL Cy Young race, where Yu Darvish and Trevor Bauer are also among those competing for the honors.
chitown311
Trevor Bauer your 2020 N.L. CY YOUNG winner
newpony13
It’s between him and darvish now, I give the edge to Trevor right now too
jyosuckas
What if it was a cautionary move? I wouldn’t count your chickens yet for those inferior pitchers
VonPurpleHayes
They’re not counting chickens. deGrom’s era jumped to over 2 by giving up 3 runs in two innings. He’s likely eliminated from the Cy Young race unless something similar happens to Bauer and Darvish.
Francys01
Don’t rule out Adam Wainwright. He has carry the team so far. Just saying.
Ry.the.Stunner
The Cy Young is about the best pitcher, not who’s most valuable to his team. That’s the MVP award. Wainwright’s ERA is over a run higher than either of those guys.
Francys01
I know. I just pointed that out that he is carrying the team.
joeyvottossocks
Be nice since Cincinnati has never had a CYA winner.
louwhitakerisahofer
Many Rolaids Relief Man Awards though…
ScrewballDownAndAway
This is Max Fried erasure.
Briffle2
The writers will never let Bauer win.
Orel Saxhiser
Why not? His being outspoken makes his good copy. Does Jacob deBore even have a speaking voice?
Joggin’George
Bauer? Outspoken? If harassing a teenage girl online qualifies as outspoken then, yeah. The guy is a tool.
pinstripes17
trevor bauer is awesome, grow up and you’ll realize it
Joggin’George
Sorry but I’m not down with a famous adult bullying a teenage girl. I’m pretty sure that’s a grown up position, but thanks.
MetsFan22
Degrom would easily win if it was a full season. But congrats…. I guess….
VonPurpleHayes
Lol. Oh you. Never change.
johnnydubz
Jeremy Jeffress should be since we won’t have 100 innings out of a starter this year
bumpy93
wow it sucks to see any big time player like the ground get injured but it is good to see there is other teams having injuries than the Philadelphia Phillies
jyosuckas
So it’s good to see athletes get injured?
GSD
I honestly can’t tell if you’re trying to be mean or if the thought behind this comment is just incredibly stupid
jyosuckas
Same!
Rangers29
So now Trevor Bauer is going to go into free agency with a CY Young (probably). Good for him. I like his content on Youtube, and I like what he has done to market he game in general.
As for Degrom and the Mets, this sucks. The Mets now don’t have a pitching staff. This is bad. They will miss the playoffs. Crap.
MarlinsFanBase
Uh, the Mets weren’t in Playoff position with deGrom. How is this injury a cited reason?
MetsFan22
Bc they lost stroman and Thor. Stop acting like the marlins have more talent than the Mets
Briffle2
Who cares about talent if you can’t stay on the field?
VonPurpleHayes
Stroman and Thor do not make the Mets great. We saw that in 2019. Love the excuses though. Marlins lost an entire roster. Still in a playoff spot. Keep ignoring them.
MetsFan22
You clearly don’t understand how baseball works. The Mets SP is horrible and the main reason we are bad this year… Degrom Thor stroman lugo and Peterson is a top 5 rotation.
Ry.the.Stunner
That is NOT a top rotation. Syndergaard hasn’t had TOR stuff in a few years and Stroman is about as inconsistent as you can get.
VonPurpleHayes
Few guys in the sport more overrated than Syndergaard.
Joggin’George
I’m a Mets fan and I have to agree with this
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
The Mets would probably be in better shape with a healthy Syndergaard and Stroman, but I think it’s a big leap to assume that it would be a top rotation.
Not to mention, they have other issues (some of which a lot of fans aren’t interested in acknowledging)
Orel Saxhiser
The Marlins lost 18 guys to COVID. The Dodgers, Braves, and Yankees have had more injuries than the Mets. Organizational depth matters. The Mets will miss the playoffs because the stink. It’s hysterical how Mets fans refuse to acknowledge the importance of defense.
johnnydubz
@VPH who cares since baseball is fixed. Manfred feels he owes Jeter for not letting his cheating ass into the HOF this year. Marlins should’ve forfeited those games or played it out with the guys who were healthy.
VonPurpleHayes
Wow. Ridiculous comment. 10/10
bigjonliljon
Not going to happen. Votes will go to Darvish just because Bauer is so disliked.
yaketymac
And to think, I benched a few Phillies tonight out of fear of deGrom. Season makes no sense
MarlinsFanBase
Season makes no sense? What do you mean? Marlins are fighting for a playoff spot. Makes complete sense.
MetsFan22
Lol marlins should be in last
Joggin’George
What does “should” have to do with it?
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, I remember you stated that the Marlins would be 15 games out of 4th place, even in a 60-game season. Apparently the Marlins didn’t get your memo.
BTW, can both of you explain the analytics to me as to why the Marlins are currently ahead of the Mets in the standings?
Joggin’George
The Marlins have played better. I’ve never claimed otherwise. They’ve been the better team. You’re looking for an argument that just isn’t there when it comes to me.
SalaryCapMyth
Damn. I shouldn’t wish him back because I’m a Braves fan but deGrom is baseball’s best pitcher. The man is a freaking artist.
Ancient Pistol
There should be no Cy Young this season. I just can’t see giving such a distinction to a pitcher who throws only 70 innings or so.
Ry.the.Stunner
Because he’s still competing with other pitchers who threw 70 innings or so. It’s not like certain pitchers are competing with an unfair advantage over his competition.
Briffle2
Exactly. Everyone is still playing 60 games.
VonPurpleHayes
FWIW, Mets’ announcers are saying it’s back spasms which really could be a precautionary thing. He wasn’t looking very sharp today, so why chance it? Wishing him well. No one is better on the mound. The game is more enjoyable with him in it, even though he usually owns my team.
MarlinsFanBase
It’s very likely precautionary. Either way, this could be the beginning of Father Time introducing himself to deGrom.
Briffle2
He was still throwing 99
jyosuckas
He’s 32 and converted from SS just 10 years ago, but keep dreamin’
nentwigs
Probably wanted to get home to DeBride.
JerryBird
Two effective innings. That should wrap up another well deserved Cy Young. deGrom is 4-1 and the Mets are in 4th, just as I predicted. Sorry Trevor Bauer, you Scherzer and Ryu will all be screwed out of the award. Three straight years for the guy that leads his team to the playoffs, well, maybe not.
jyosuckas
It’s an individual award that has nothing to team performance
JerryBird
Exactly! Scherzer, Ryu and Bauer. “Nuff said.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
You might have a point on Scherzer (who also had an outstanding season in 2018, and I wouldn’t have argued with him winning it) but Ryu was not screwed out of the award in any way. DeGrom’s numbers were better overall, and any advantages Ryu had were tiny. Bauer will win it if his numbers hold, and deservedly so.
Focusing on team success and playoffs is silly in general when it comes to the Cy Young, but it’s especially silly when 2 of the 3 guys you named also pitched for teams that missed the playoffs.
Javia
I think I will wait until the season is over before I decide my Cy Young vote. If any of Bauer, Darvish or Fried have 1 bad outing between now and the end of the year they are out. I mean DeGrom already had this thing wrapped up until today.
Ry.the.Stunner
No he didn’t. Bauer was in the lead in stats that matter to voters as far as most people are concerned.
Mikel Grady
Degrom is my vote, but as a Cub fan love seeing Darvish rebound and with Bauer a free agent would love to see the Cubs sign him . Lester Quintana and chatwood will be gone and ton of money off books . Darvish should get to wear a division champs T-shirt though.
Orel Saxhiser
The best NL pitcher I’ve seen is Dinelson Lamet. He’s 3-1, 2.12, with a 0.89 WHIP and .171 BA against. Just 36 hits in 59.1 innings with 17 walks and 79 strikeouts. No one is throwing the ball better right now. He’s the guy I’d least like to face in October. Right now I’d go with him for Cy Young and Freddie Freeman in a cakewalk for MVP
Rookie of the Year is up in the air. Though he came up late, I’m inclined to go with Sixto Sanchez. He’s the best of the rookie pitchers, though Dustin May has been excellent and Tony Gonsolin is coming on strong with a 1.51 ERA. 0.79 WHIP and .176 BA Against. Cronenworth, Bohm, and Gimenez have been best among position players, though none have had the impact of those three pitchers with Sanchez being the best of the best,
mookie1
I know everyone likes to express their opinion, but there is no way of knowing who will win it yet. With the limited amount of innings, anyone in contention can still blow up like deGrom. Conversely, someone (including deGrom) can throw two gems to move ahead of the pack. As of today, it should go to Bauer, but that can certainly change.
VonPurpleHayes
The thinking is, why bother pitching deGrom and risking further injury? Mets are essentially eliminated even prior to this injury. Keep your ace healthy for 2021. Even without missing a start, it’s hard to make up for 3 runs in two innings in a tight CY race.
mookie1
I definitely agree that they shouldn’t risk it if the Mets are out of it. However, they have five games before he would need to start again. If they make up ground (unlikely), he will be pitching for a chance to make the playoffs in addition to a 3rd CY. If they don’t make up ground, the Mets should shut him down. deGrom is such a competitor, he will likely want to pitch either way.
With two dominant starts he absolutely would still have a chance to win the CY. Think 14 innings, no runs, 20 strikeouts. Of course, it would depend on how the other candidates perform as well.
Orel Saxhiser
They are all competitors. If that’s true of deGrom, then treat the two innings as his bullpen session and let him pitch against the Braves on Sunday.
mookie1
Apparently that is being considered, but he would still only be able to start twice in the remaining 11 games.
Obviously they are all competitors. Definitely not to the same degree. Some play through injury or pain, while others beg out for less serious reasons. Sports history is full of examples.
Orel Saxhiser
Bauer’s nine starts have come against Detroit (2), Milwaukee (2), Pittsburgh (2), the Cubs (2), and Kansas City. Not the best bunch of lineups. And what about deGrom pitching four straight times against the Marlins?
mookie1
Good point. Ideally those things would factor into voting, but it wasn’t that long ago that W-L record was a major consideration. I doubt most voters would consider that. They can’t control who they pitch against.
