Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez exited their win over the Royals on Monday with left thumb discomfort, Mandy Bell of MLB.com relays. The Indians replaced Ramirez, who Bell notes has been dealing with the issue for weeks, with Mike Freeman. Whether Ramirez will miss any more time remains to be seen, but the Indians can only hope he won’t, as he has played an important role in their 26-15 start. The 27-year-old Ramirez has followed up a so-so 2019 (by his standards) with a .248/.350/.478 start and nine home runs in 183 plate appearances this season.
- Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer departed their game Monday against the Rockies with a left finger injury, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets. San Diego plugged in the just-acquired Mitch Moreland in place of Hosmer, who’s in the third season of an eight-year, $144MM contract and has easily enjoyed his best campaign as a Padre. Thanks in part to an increase in fly balls, Hosmer has slashed .291/.346/.547 (a career-high 138 wRC+) with eight home runs in 127 plate appearances. Hosmer’s rebound from a couple of mediocre seasons has contributed to the Padres’ 25-17 start.
- Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton “ran bases, hit off a machine and threw today,” Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets, but it remains unclear when or if he’ll return in 2020. Even if Stanton does play again this year, it will go in the books as the second straight injury-ruined season for the ex-NL MVP, as he missed almost all of 2019 with health issues and has been on the IL since Aug. 9 with a left hamstring strain. The Stanton-less Yankees have struggled over the past few weeks and are now fighting for their playoff lives.
- Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson had to leave their game against the Diamondbacks on Monday after fouling a ball off his right leg (video via Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area). The Giants called on Darin Ruf to take over for Dickerson. There’s no word on Dickerson’s status, but he’s someone the Giants can ill afford to go without for an extended stretch. They’re surprisingly in playoff contention, and Dickerson has followed up last season’s solid showing with a .264/.342/.528 line and seven home runs this year, making him one of the Giants’ most valuable players [UPDATE: Dickerson’s X-Rays came back negative. He has a knee contusion, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic relays].

Please don’t tell me again the reason the NYY Lise us hitting when it is pitching being the problem.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
I watched most of Monday’s Yankee game. Yankees looked bad they were up 6-2 before they gave up 10 runs in one inning. Ottavino got absolutely hammered.
Perksy
Both are pretty bad right now, hitting and pitching.
ChangedName
Dang, Texas really went in the tank after that whole Tatis Jr. situation, weren’t they in a playoff spot like 2 weeks ago? Now they are in the running for the #1 pick? Crazy.
jimmyz
Why was Hosmer trying to bunt in the first place?
petersdylan36
The shift on him leaves no one down anywhere close to third base
CNichols
What was strange though is this failed bunt attempt happened with two strikes on him. If he wanted to try beat the shift earlier in the count that’s one thing, but it seemed like a situation where with two strikes on him the odds we’re against him getting the bunt down. It really didn’t make sense.
algionfriddo
I think I remember he tried to bunt a pitch or 2 before he was hit as well. I see what he was thinking, but not a good plan with 2 strikes. Hosmer finished 2020 with a modest .656 OPS vLHP. Hosmer was really hitting RHP well too. One of the NLs better hitters overall vRHP. Much improved defensively as well. Tough loss for SD. Pitch would have drilled him square if his hand/bat had not deflected it. WAY inside. It might well have been scored a HBP but that was not the call. He didn’t really offer at the pitch.
mrpadre19
To add insult to injury he was pulling the bat back when it hit him but they called it a strike….as an attempt to bunt the ball.
He was trying to get out of the way and should have been awarded first base.
CNichols
I’d actually like to hear from him about that, doubt he ever goes this in depth but I would be curious to see if he was trying to pull it back or if he was still trying to get it down even the pitch came in on him.
On the broadcast Mark Grant was pretty convinced from the video that he left the bat out there to offer at it and I guess the umpires agreed. To me it looked like he was bailing out and just awkwardly couldn’t get the bat and his hands out of the way
windycitykid89
Sounds like Hosmer broke his finger according to a report. Good thing they acquired Moreland to possibly help ease the blow, but still a big blow nonetheless
DrDan75
It’s a good play if you can actually get the bunt down. Hosmer likes to hit the other way, so their pitcher was jamming him trying to get him to pull.
Aoe3
Stanton may not be back anymore now? Wow tough.l case. I just want to see him play, even if hes a rival.
JohhnyBets67
Remember when the Yankees bent the Marlins over a barrel when they acquired Giancarlo Stanton!
Too bad they acquired obviously broken glass.
racosun
Pretty sure you have it backwards. Miami performed a miracle when they found someone to take on that contract.
JohhnyBets67
raco!
That’s what an intelligent person would’ve thought at the time. However, you can take a look back in time and see how many people thought that Jeter gave his old team a gift!!
Polish Hammer
Yes, but why on earth would a AAAA organization like Miami even sign him to a contract everybody knew they couldn’t afford? There was no way he was going to see that deal begin and end in Miami. Was destined to be a deal just like A-Rods in Texas where they can’t afford to put anyone around the player and end up dealing to the deep pocket Yankees and eating part of the contract not to play for the team.
JohhnyBets67
It wasn’t the same ownership group. Jeff Loria has a history of signing big money deals to help benefit his agenda. Whether that’s a new stadium or TV contract. Though it doesn’t matter why it was signed in the first place. What matters is that the Yankees foolishly decided to take it on.
It wasn’t lime Sherman and Jeter signed off on the initial deal. They inherited the mess.
Polish Hammer
I get that, but there hasn’t been any ownership Groupon Miami that would ever have saw that contract play through. Foolish, and lucky they weren’t on the hook for more of the $$$$ just to pay for him to go away.
Marvels MAGA Man
Why would Miami even sign him to a contract like that?
Same reason any team signs a big time name to a mega contract.
Try to put butts in the seats and make money off their superstar. He signed the contract at 25. Similar to Trout, Machado, and Harper.
Polish Hammer
Yes, give a man a humongous contract and no trade clause (brilliant) to fill the seats, something they have never done outside of their 1st season or two. They’ve been 26th or worst in attendance in 18 of the last 20 years, with the worst being the years he was really mashing the ball. Fleecing the locals to foot the bill for a stadium only to break up the roster immediately wasn’t going to go away just by extending him.
pasha2k
Yes me too. I love a good baseball game with great players.
Technically correct
I don’t think anyone is actually reporting Stanton might not come back. I think it’s just conjecture by the author because time is running out and there hasn’t been a firm timetable given to this point. Seems like all of the updates are still trending in a positive direction though and the Yankees are more imposing when he is in the lineup. At the moment, they are fighting for the final playoff spot, so I’d have to imagine if he can go, then he will. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s activated during the weirdly crucial series against Baltimore that begins Thursday.
davemlaw
Glad to hear Alex Dickerson is OK, the foul ball off his knee looked very painful.
Howie415
I hate calling players brittle, but Dickerson gets injured a lot. But, Slater has been hitting real well this your.
CaptainThurman
I’m old enough to remember the Yankees being really bad in the late 1960s and the late 1980s. They are at that level right now.
Polish Hammer
And I’m certain there’s soooooo many people feeling sorry for them…
fitsiqis65
Would love to have stanton back, but the number one issue with the yanks is pitching and especially SP. That’s on cash
Cash spends 40 mil a year on 3 relievers (ottavino, chap and britton), while Tampa’s whole team payroll is 52 mil…
Cash has not developed once solid SP in his entire tenure (stop with seve, he has pitched one full season as a SP and it was mixed after a great first half).
Cash has one WS under his watch of nearly 2 decades- outspending every team on payroll, scouting, management, analytics and facilities by a large margin.
its time to swap GMs with Tampa and see who the real genius is….
Polish Hammer
They could’ve upped their bid in the Clevinger talks as Cleveland wanted a package that included Frazier.
Louiebeans
In other new Brett Garbage found his way into the number 3 hole again . Same ol same ol story never ends,
fitsiqis65
but he is such a leader. worth than 10 mil lol
els + happ + gardy = 50 mil (or 2 mil less than the first place rays team payroll)
Bartman
If anyone wants to know why I no longer buy the MLB Extra Inning package.
Last year the Yankees paid Stanton $440,667 per at bat. With the shortened season and assuming he doesn’t play again, they got a bargain this year only paying $178,148 per at bat.
luckyh
Stanton is the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you Derek Jeter.
beersy
It is amazing how many Major League ball players don’t hold the bat correctly when trying to bunt. If Hosmer had held the bat the way you are “supposed to”, this wouldn’t have happened. Gotta hope Moreland starts hitting.
VTGiant
Yankees LOL!
Mr Baseball
Stanton is running, hitting and throwing, so why isn’t he playing.? It seems that some players, particularly Stanton and Judge, go through an abbreviated ‘Spring Training’ before returning to the field which only extends their time away from the field. It’s so frustrating as a paying fan to not see your stars and instead, watch back=ups who are AAAA players at best (see Wade and Estrada). We can come up with all the reasons in the world that the Yankees are tanking this year; lack of leadership, Boone, Cashman, the bullpen, Sanchez. But while they are all true, it is injuries that are at the root cause of this year’s failure. Anyone remember when they’re record was 16-6 before the injury bug hit?
