The Giants have released infielder Abiatal Avelino, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. He had been part of the Giants’ alternate training site.
The 25-year-old Avelino – whom San Francisco acquired from the Yankees in a 2018 trade centering on Andrew McCutchen – had brief stints with the Giants in each of the previous two seasons, during which he totaled five hits (all singles) in 19 plate appearances. Avelino has garnered far more experience in Triple-A, though he also hasn’t been a world-beater there, evidenced by his .266/.302/.402 slash with 15 home runs across 873 trips to the plate.
In other Giants news, manager Gabe Kapler announced to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area and other reporters that the team could activate left-hander Drew Smyly from the injured list on Wednesday or Thursday. Smyly, whom the Giants signed to a $4MM guarantee in the offseason, has only made three appearances this year and hasn’t pitched since Aug. 1 on account of a strained left index finger. Before that, the 31-year-old threw 8 1/3 innings of three-run ball with 11 strikeouts and four walks, and he averaged a career-best 93.4 mph on his fastball. Two of Smyly’s three outings this season have come as a starter, but it’s unclear whether he’ll return to the playoff-contending Giants’ rotation when he comes back.

Man, with his speed & inability to get on base, that’s a Dayton Moore blue light special right there!
ChocoRolles
What a waste McCutchen was for the Giants. Giving up Reynolds who at that point was still in AA was horrible. Damm you Bobby Evans.
Baseball 1600
Crazy how they gave up loads more for half a season of McCutchen than what they gave up for 5 years of Longo, who was and has been more productive than Cutch the past three years.
ChocoRolles
I followed Reynolds since he got drafted and had a feeling he was going to be a solid OF for the Giants. The guy never batted less than .300 in the minors. McCutchen was serviceable at best.
Howie415
Reynolds is a different story this season. Maybe he will turn it around next year.
Jean Matrac
Howie415:
Yeah, he has been a totally different player this season. It could be he;s been unable to make the adjustments. One season, especially the first, can be misleading.
Jean Matrac
1600, & ChocoRolles:
Hindsight is always 20/20. Reynolds hasn’t been good this year at all, and I worry that he’s not adjusting.
SF gave up Arroyo for Longo, and I think at the time Arroyo was expected to develop better. It’s a crap shoot. McCutchen was great for the Yankees after the trade, and good last season for the Phillies.
Howie415
I think Bobby Evans gets a bad rap. The stature of Giants farm system has risen on his signings. These guys are really young.
ChocoRolles
@tad McCutchen has not been good since 2017. Reynolds is struggling but how many other established vets and All-Stars are doing the same? Reynolds had more value since he was going to be on a rookie salary, with Giants until 2025, switch hitter, can play all OF positions, and relies more on contact than power, but has decent pop. McCutchen was only going to be there for a year at most and it was highly unlikely the Giants would bring him back.
ChocoRolles
@Howie my beef with Bobby are the trades he made Longo, McCutchen, McGee (Luis Castillo) and Matt Moore trades. Those trades set Giants back like years. 2017 was when the Giants should have started the rebuild.
scottn59c
@ Choco: Some of those trades are starting to look a little better in the rear view mirror. While Matt Moore turned out to be mostly a bust, so did Matt Duffy. Arroyo also was no big loss, as it turns out. The Longo of 2020 is the one Evans thought he was trading for, and if he helps get the Giants into the playoffs this year, he will have gone a long way towards redemption.
Jean Matrac
Choco:
McCutchen has not been good since 2017? Maybe you should check his stats. In 2018 he had an OPS+ of 120. It was 115 when he played for the Giants. But it was an impressive 145 during his Yankee stint. It was 115 last year for the Phils. Maybe 115 – 120 isn’t elite, but it’s still 15% -20% better than the MLB average. If you think that’s not good, I’d say your standards are too high.
ChocoRolles
@tad I guess my standards are a little too high for him and I look at all the stats not just OPS+
Jean Matrac
Choco:
Also, look at his wRC+. In his supposedly last good year it was 122, In 2018 it was 121, and last year it was 120. That is not a massive fall off in production.
ChocoRolles
@Scott Longoria has good defense so that helps the trade a lot even when wasn’t raking. He is still owed over $35 million over the next 3 years. That’s a lot of money.
ChocoRolles
@tad i have high standards for him because he was one of my favorite players to watch. I just hate when players start to slow down, but it’s inevitable.
Jean Matrac
Choco:
Then what stats are you looking at? BA? That’s the only one that seems subpar. His OBP was .368, and .378 in 2018 and 2019. He had an SLG of .424 and .457 in those years. But OPS+ and wRC+ are the most telling in determining a player’s value based on park factors. Tell me which of his stats are the ones that make him not good.
jorge78
Long had a big contract dragging his value down…..
hard90
The Giants.Lol
Howie415
Ha. I wondered when you were going to show up. There is only a game difference between the Giants, and your Yankees. And the Giants don’t have half a billion dollars on the IL. Is Stanton ever going to play again? Talk about a joke.
ChocoRolles
The Yankees are 3rd in their division and are going to miss the playoffs.Lol
PandaExpress
Why would anyone here care about a Yankees fan?
Howie415
Because @27rings, a Yankees fan, comes on here and belittles the Giants, and their fans, all the time. He has at least 3 aliases, and is self-congratulatory. You must be new here. Or, you are it and playing dumb.
VTGiant
He’s just a lost, common troll trying to find the way back to his Momma’s basement.
PandaExpress
@ChocoRolles not especially new here. I just couldn’t care less what a troll Yankees fan thinks about anything associated with the Giants.
Howie415
But the Yankee troll cared what everybody else thought. It had an insatiable need for attention. A real narcissist.
giantsphan12
Guess Howie has your # @27. Couldn’t come up with a response to his sharp truth? 27rings = lol
ChocoRolles
@Panda I wasn’t the one that said you were new, that was Howie415, but I’m sure he meant no I’ll intent by it

27ringsbitches:
You’ve lost what minuscule credibility you ever had. Which has gone down from day one. The Giants are a good hitting team, getting some decent starting pitching, and with a better pen would have 3-4 more wins. They’re respectable if not a truly legitimate contender. On the other hand, by exhibiting true low baseball IQ, 27ringsbitches has become a laughingstock at MLBTR.
jekporkins
He really has. It’s one thing to go on another team’s thread and talk smack, but when his team is absolutely pathetic and looking worse every day it’s sad. I mean, talking smack when you’re team is worse? That’s like dancing in the end zone when you’re team is behind 42-6.
seventythreesfgfan
Damn spot on post. You have to realize that the Giants have a history of trading players who turn out to be hidden gems. Thankfully Farhan is changing that be doing the same thing to other teams, hence Yaz.
claude raymond
I get what choco is saying. And I agree. All these posts responding to 27 rings are what he lives for. He posts STRICTLY for attention. Please stop feeding him. Cuz like choco, I could give 2 Jon Sterlings about 27rings
