Ozzie Albies is back on the Braves’ active roster, as the second baseman was activated from the 10-day injured list after missing over a month due to a bone contusion in his right wrist. In the corresponding move, infielder Johan Camargo was optioned to the Braves’ alternate training site.
Albies played in only 11 games and was hitting .159/.196/.273 in 46 PA before being sidelined, though the Braves are hoping that a fully recovered Albies will now look more like his past All-Star form. Albies’ return should only enhance the Braves’ already-strong offense, and considering how Atlanta’s rotation has been ravaged by injuries, the Braves may need to slug their way through the pennant race until they can get some of their top hurlers back.
Camargo and Adeiny Hechavarria handled much of the second base duty while Albies was out, and Camargo will now head to the alternate site while the veteran Hechavarria remains as Atlanta’s lone current utility infield choice. The hitting struggles that plagued Camargo in 2019 have carried over to this season, as he has batted just .200/.244/.367 with four home runs in 127 plate appearances.

Camargo to the training site. Kudos!

Finally! I never thought he was a starting caliber 3B. There was a time I considered him a solid utility piece. He’s been completely awful, though. Glad they’re moving away from him.
bravesfan
They just optioned him. I’d hardly call that “moving away.” Nor is it quite the time to give up on him. He has shown he can provide real value as a backup / bench piece. That said, he’s really struggled the last year plus. I can’t put my finger on what exactly seems to be the problem, but everything he does comes across as a little lazy or lackadaisical… would like to see a bit more energy from the kid…
Appalachian_Outlaw
He’s 26, and a position player- he’s not going to get it. It’s time to give up on him. He just ran into a good season once, same as Chris Johnson.
bravesfan
26 is freaking young. There are a healthy amount of players who are just taking the next step to being in the show at that age. Unless we can trade him for some decent value, there is no reason to give up yet. There is a reason why we still have options on him.

Maybe back off coloring your hair Johan and work on your attitude. Guy could be much more than he’s shown. They need to get him a mentor.
braves44
They should put him in the rotation.
MTDewdWV
Couldn’t hurt.

They should put Camargo in the rotation. Kid has a great arm … bet he can pitch
SalaryCapMyth
Ya, seriously. There have been way to many blow outs. Last night’s game against the Marlins is just one of many..and it was against the Marlins. Got home from work late last night and that bit of news just finished the day off appropriately.
azbraves20
Camargo cant hit anything, maybe he can learn to throw more than 3 innings while training?
Where is Christian Bethancourt (probably spelled wrong)? The kid could catch and pitch for us.
DarkSide830
on a Minors contract with Philly.
WarkMohlers
Bethancourt cant pitch and can’t catch. Throw? You bet he can. Always had an incredibly strong arm but that’s about it.
Never was a great defensive catcher. I remember when he was a prospect and it seemed like they never wavered in thinking about his potential instead of what he actually produced. People brought up his elite arm and pop time while saying he “could” be elite defensively with coaching. Problem was he consistently had problems with coach-ability so his game never progressed. Can’t project if the player doesn’t work to progress.
I know this was a joke, but still stings a little haha. Hopefully we can use Contreras as a piece in a trade before the Braves realize you can’t just hope you will be a clone of his brother.
Mrtwotone
Camargo has been surprisingly awful this year
DTD_ATL
I think you mean unsurprisingly considering he was so miserable last yr also. His one good season has proven to be a fluke.
DTD_ATL
Now Camargo will have more time to frost his tips and hopefully work on making a little contact with risp
WarkMohlers
“Cant hit with risp unless you frost them tips.”

I’ll say it now. Start training Camargo to pitch some..

Does this mean Camargo is a free agent? I think any team would jump on him if he’s available. Maybe all he needs is two months of everyday playing time at AAA in 2021 and focus on a regular position? Part if the problem could simply be trying to do too much, too sporadicly to stay at the major league level?
What were his primary role and position in the minors? Table setter or run producer? Defense oriented or catalyst? If his strength is hitting 2nd, 7th or 8th, why not let him be the best at that spot?
It’s kind of like the Phillies expecting Maikel Franco to be a middle of the lineup guy. He had the best numbers in baseball in the 8 hole with solid 3b defense. But that wasn’t ever good enough for them.
I think many teams would love to have Camargo.
bravesiowafan
Camargo was never considered a real prospect he has no outstanding tool. This is the issue when sites try to make a player seem better then he is. Camargo has one good season in the majors and was never really good in the minors. He has like a 3 week tear in AAA last year but otherwise he’s always been a below mediocre player.
bravesfan
What do you define as a “real prospect”. He was in our top 30 for a long time. I consider those real prospects. Look, he’s still young, has a great arm and some defensive talent. It’s not time to give up on him. I think his ceiling is an awesome bench piece and spot starter. But unfortunately we appear to be seeing his floor lately which appears to be lackadaisical baseball :/
bravesiowafan
He was ranked #24 in 2015 that’s the most herald he was as a prospect. Yes his ceiling may be a back up guy but right now he’s not even thAt. He can’t hit; he hasn’t had close to the same glove he had in 2018. I’m sorry but I just don’t see what others do in camargo. I watch every Braves game and he is nothing besides the blip of stats from 2018. I’d get it if this was the argument last year with Dansby but camargo has never been considered anything but a fringe prospect
bravesfan
Agreed.

Just like Markakis, Camargo has had 2 good months in the last 4 years. Its time to move on and I’m surprised they finally sent him down.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Markakis is a quality major league bat. He may even play long enough to amass 3000 hits he’s already got the 500 doubles. He gets to 3000 he’s HOF.

The best defense is a good offense. Who needs starting pitching?
