Having parted ways with GM Billy Eppler, the Angels are looking for a new top baseball operations decisionmaker. Club president John Carpino discussed the situation with reporters including MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger.
While it could be tempting to move quickly, before other teams consider front office changes, the Halos intend to take things slowly. Carpino indicates that the organization doesn’t have much of a timeframe at all, saying only that it would “ideally” have a new hire installed by late November.
That’s not to say the club hasn’t begun the process. Carpino says that he and owner Arte Moreno have already started compiling and honing a “large list” of candidates. It’s still possible at this point that the Angels will hire a general manager or instead add both a president of baseball operations and a GM to share some of the primary duties.
It certainly sounds as if the Angels are ready to shake things up after a brutal run of disappointing results. Despite big budgets and a roster highlighted by the game’s greatest player, the Halos are simply “not winning games,” says Carpino. “Something is not right in our organization,” he explained, adding that “there are things in here that aren’t working.”
While an incoming executive will be tasked with revamping the team’s process, he or she will also face immediate expectations when it comes to fielding a winner. In Carpino’s estimation, the Halos already possess “the base of a strong team” and are “not that far away” from contending.

Hire somebody from the Tampa Bay Rays. They know what they’re doing. Unless you pry Friedman away from the rival Dodgers. Arte, Make him a offer he can’t refuse.

I want the head of the scouting department from the Dodgers. But will most likely be the assistant GM from the A’s do to his relationship with Joe Madden

Dave Dombrowski would make more sense if the Halos had a STACKED farm system from which he could trade, but after seeing the angels the last couple years, I do NOT think they really have that. In my honest opinion the Angels are a MESS and need a COMPLETE REBUILD.. Don’t ask me what they do with Mike Trout during the rebuild, but the obvious answer is TRADE him for ALL you can GET.
johnnydubz
Yeah to the Yanks for Miguel Andujar but Angels will need to add………
wild bill tetley
Dombrowski doesn’t need a stacked farm system. Aside from the Sale trade he signed a bunch of guys on-top of bad contracts like HanRam, Sandoval and Rusney in Boston. Angels get an arm or two (Bauer, Stroman) they will be a contender. Take away their awful first month and they played decent baseball.
Then some salary comes off the books soon (Pujols) and they continue to build the team up. If Moreno is willing to spend beyond the threshold for 1 year they could be great.
racosun
Cupboards were bare when Trader Dave took the helm in Detroit. Went through some lean years before the ‘06 break-out. Had to hire Alan Trammel as manager to appease the local fans.

Dombrowski wouldn’t get the level of control he wants working under Moreno.

Dombrowski did not sign Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval OR Rusney Castillo. They were were ALL signed under FORMER GM Ben Cherington, who is now in Pittsburgh…….
wild bill tetley
Yes mlb fan, that is what I said. He signed a bunch of guys (like Price, JD Martinez) on-top of the bad contracts like those I mentioned. Why? Because Boston wanted to win and Dombrowski said cool. Boston went over the threshold and they went to the postseason three years in a row, traded for Sale after the first two attempts resulted in first round defeat thanks to Price no-showing in October.
Thanks for trying to correct something that wasn’t wrong in the first place.

Everyone misses the big problem with this org. Simply put they have no farm culture. All the teams at the top (Dodgers, yanKees, Rays, Indiana, White sox) have over invested in scouting and young player development. Arte keeps cutting costs everywhere but the big league roster which means he ends up paying market rate at best for most of our talent and you simply can’t buy enough to compete.
Without top tier investment, you don’t get top tier results in this area and Arte’s impatience and frankly insecurity about winning now hamstrings them form developing an org philopshy that takes time to blossom.
Angles need a GM with a track record of development, regardless of where Trout is one is career curve. I hope Arte picks them and. Then spends on something other than the major league roster.
Marvels MagaMan
Angels fans – we need some up to date with the current game, someone up and coming, someone who knows what they’re doing, someone who will help us be competitive for years to come.
Moreno – oh I got you. Dave Dombrowski.
Angels fans – you damn well know thats not who we wanted
Moreno – I wasn’t listening. I was too buys signing tanaka to an 8 year 250 million dollar contact. what were we talking about?

That’s a lot of years and a lot of money for a guy that has known ligament damage in his pitching elbow, has never pitched 200 innings, just threw up a 4.19 FIP season and will be 32 in the offseason.
Excel_1984
Think he was being sarcastic
Geebs
I read it again with sarcasm in my thoughts and you’re probably right that is how he likely intended the statement, it was the mention of Dombrowski that threw me off, seems like a lot of Angels fans want him.
bradthebluefish
If you want to make it to a World Series, Dave Dombrowski is your guy. Did it for three different franchises, three separate times.

This is true, he is a good guy to get behind if that’s your goal and with Trout on the Angels roster it really should be their goal.

He also accomplished that feat by trading prospects for established players. That’s fine, but I’m not sure the Angels have the prospects.

prov356
Kim Ng is likely who he’s referring to. A solid choice.
bobtillman
Ya she’s been out there for a while…but at this point I think her interest is higher up the food chain than GM.
In today’s game, GM’s are basically functionaries. Major decisions are made further upstairs. GMs will get the blame for poor results, but that’s only because poop flows down hill.
Redstitch108
Solid choice? You gotta be kidding.
prov356
Red – I’ve heard good stuff about her. You apparently have a problem with her so instead of being one dimensional, what are your concerns?
themustache
His main concern is her lack of penis, apparently. Weird thing to get hung up on.
Halo11Fan
No, people’s main concern is she got the job because she’s a woman and not the best person for the job.
prov356
Don’t create an issue of sexism where there isn’t one. I’ve only heard good things about her qualifications as a baseball person. Maybe Red has heard something different and his concerns are valid. We don’t know because he dropped a comment with no facts, which is all too common.
They should hire the best person for the job, which has nothing to do with gender.
Halo11Fan
prov356
Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols signings were based on marketing. The last thing I want is for Moreno to bring in a GM for marketing and publicity reasons.
prov356
Right. That’s why the best person for that position should be hired. Gender and every other non-GM qualification or characteristic is irrelevant.
themustache
No, your main concern is that she’s not a man. You said as much below. What do you know about Kim Ng that makes you believe she couldn’t handle the job? I’m not going to pretend I know she would or wouldn’t be a good GM, but I’m not going to immediately dismiss her based on her genitals, like you and your buddy Redstitch.
God, I hope you don’t have and never have children, especially a daughter.

@Halo11Fan hey we all know signing Pujols got them more new money from their TV contract than what they are paying Pujols!

But not Jerry Dipoto.;-)
Seriously, the Angels need to give their next general manager more authority.

LOL Yes I meant mic, not Mike.
muskie73
The Angels have suffered five straight losing seasons since Jerry Dipoto left (although the Halos posted a winning record in 2015, the season that saw Dipoto resign on July 1).
Dipoto took over a Seattle franchise in shambles and has the club headed in the right direction with a top farm system. The Mariners have posted a winning record in two of his five seasons there with an overall record of 348-360.
Meanwhile the Angels are headed in the wrong direction after trailing the Mariners in three of five seasons with an overall record of 332-376.

Atre Moreno is a wannabe George Steinbrenner minus the winning.
Angels & NL West
Moreno, Carpino, LaRussa and Stoneman will be making the decision on a new GM. The only one I trust is Stoneman and I fear he doesn’t have Arte’s ear like LaRussa. I just don’t trust Arte to make the right choice. His baseball instincts are, shall we say, lacking. And LaRussa doesn’t seem to understand the benefits of the current Front Office model.

force Albert to retire so we can use the money on pitching. trade Upton. re-sign Simmons. go over the cap for an ace. keep our youngsters if possible.
Evan Siggson
1. Can’t “force” Pujols to retire.
2. Nobody would want Upton unless Angels take back a similar bad contract.
3.Letting Simmons go and replacing him with Fletcher and using that money on pitching is a much better plan.
4. There is no salary cap
5. Only FA SP that can be called an ace is Bauer and he’s getting paid big-time
AngelDiceClay
Leave Fletcher at 2B. He’s not a everyday SS. Just sign Simba to a 2 year contract with a club option. Rendon, Simba, Fletcher and Walsh is a good Inf on offense and defense.
wild bill tetley
Angels played better without Simmons. Let him walk if his ankle is up for it.
i like al conin
The only thing you’ll get from Albert is a roster spot. Upton’s contract is way under water, Simmons is a luxury when you need SP. Not criticizing, just offering my view. I know you have good intentions here.
HalosHeavenJJ
Simmons departure creates a hole. Rengifo is not starter material.
The good news is Fletcher can cover SS or 2B so the Angels have options on the market. I like Cesar Hernandez. Somebody at SS or 2B will sign an affordable deal.
KCJ
If nothing else, just PLEASE STOP playing Pujols every day. Just because he’s grossly overpaid does not mean that you must cripple the team by playing him. Unless I’m mistaken, league rules do allow teams to bench highly paid players.

“Something wrong here.”
You hired an assistant from the best GM maybe in all of sports.
He acquired a SS,LF,3B CP.
Your issue is your staff ops can not evaluate talent.
Grichuck? Goodwin? How many others got away?
The Albert contract, what a waste of money. You knew that the day he signed it. Your fans point to the HR’s. How about delivering in the clutch? Albert has not.
Every pitcher has TJ. How does that work?
The Otani situation has handcuffed multiple positions-an albatross.
Your concession stands rival a food court at the mall. You need a new stadium.
The best is-what is the last big trade you won? Ever notice you cannot obtain a big name in trade because your farm system is bereft of talent?
I’d trade Trout for an entire team and their farm system. You could easily fleece 7-9 players/prospects from a club.

prov356
dave frost –
“The Otani situation has handcuffed multiple positions-an albatross.” What does that mean?
“I’d trade Trout…”. I team just can’t trade a player with a no trade clause. Plus you don’t trade away the best player ever. You build a team around him like Eppler did.
The problem is Moreno values the long ball more than pitching. Pitching has been our problem for years and until our staff is overhauled completely, we will wallow in the same results. Keep Bundy. Everyone else is expendable.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
“Something is not right in our organization,” he explained, adding that “there are things in here that aren’t working.”

They have no pitching. End of story.

“He or she” what a joke. Political correctness run amok. This is professional baseball, not a women’s lingerie section at a department store.

there is a female coach on the Giants, and Kim Ng has applied for multiple GM jobs. Mets have a female special adviser to the GM, etc.
Redstitch108
The female coach is on the 49ers not Giants. And she is a quality control coach which is a little different.
themustache
You poor kid. This female thing really bothers you, doesn’t it? I feel so sorry for you.
Halo11Fan
themustache
It’s hiring someone because she’s a female that bothers me. It use to be a woman had to be better than a man to get the job, now a woman nearly needs to be simply competent to get the job.
I want the best GM available. I honestly doubt that’s a woman.
Case in point, ever watch an ESPN baseball broadcast? How about a Yankee broadcast?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Mendoza is far from the best color commentator I have ever heard, but she’s better than Aaron Boone ever was and he was made the manager of the league’s signature franchise.
themustache
Yes, I do watch both. Jessica Mendoza contributes quality content to ESPN broadcasts, much more than literally any of ESPN’s male baseball broadcasters. I don’t understand the criticism against her, especially when the men on that network are near-unlistenable goofballs.
Do you think that every time a man gets hired, he is the best person for the job? You don’t think other factors come into play? Why should a woman have to surpass higher standards than a man to get the same job? It sounds like you think a man should be the innate choice and women have to clear some high bar to get the same opportunity.
Why do you honestly doubt a woman could be a competent GM? Why don’t we give it a try, at least once, before making that assumption? How many men have proven themselves to be incompetent? Yet you still believe they should be given the first opportunity every time.
Halo11Fan
She’s bad. If you say Boone is bad, fine by me.
Redstitch108
Okay why don’t we give it a try douchestashe. Assuming your team is NOT the Angels, lets let Kim Ng takeover your team. Just not mine.
Redstitch108
Unless you are a woman yourself, I feel sorry for you too. You can’t get past the injustice part to realize the impracticality of a woman running a professional baseball team.

You’re neglecting the many players who prefer to wear women’s lingerie.

Because of Upton contract (Pujols is at least somewhat productive. Future HOFer) Moreno just needs to spend massive dollars. So what if team loses money for a couple years. Does he want a brinks truck following his hearst someday?
brucenewton
Pujols had a .665 OPS. He’s worse than Upton.
mattcubs
Ooof. There’s nothing PC about noting that a woman could be a GM. Your arguments essentially boil down to the idea that there is something inherently biological about men that allow them to perform the role of GM. A female GM just clashes with your schema that sports are for men and that women are inferior. As such, you find it intolerable / unthinkable that a woman would hold an important role on a sports team. I’m sure you also think a lot of other awful things about women. You’re also probably single or divorced.
Redstitch108
Mattcubs, this is where you are wrong. I do not believe men are superior and women are inferior. And I do not believe sports are only for boys. I just simply think it is impractical to employ a woman in THIS particular position. And again with the moronic insults. Happily married with daughters thanks!
Angelic Visitations
It’s rare to find a woman that can properly command men, particularly a bunch of alphas that have risen to fame and fortune through athletic prowess, a level to which she simply couldn’t relate. Not saying a woman can’t do it, just saying that for every woman you find that would properly lead baseball ops at the Major league level, you’d find hundreds of men. If you’re hitting a woman to be a GM, she would either have to be one in a billion type of exceptional, or you’re just looking to make a statement.
I mean no disrespect, it’s just reality.
Halo11Fan
Angelic Visitations
Reality and 2020 are two words that don’t go together.
mattcubs
I mean…a lot of silly things about this. It’s just mostly invalidated by the fact that a GM doesn’t have to lead the athletes–that’s the coaches job.
I’d say the truer statement is that maybe it’s rare to find men willing to be led by a woman. In sports, you are probably dealing with much more toxic masculinity (or “alpha” males, as you called it). It’s men that ultimately get in the way and then say things like “A woman just couldn’t handle it.” At this stage of evolution, “alpha males” typically just exemplify traits no longer needed for survival that are now a hindrance and pain to society.
Angelic Visitations
That might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. It’s not Kim Ng’s problem if she isn’t a good president of baseball ops, it’s Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon’s fault for not willing to be led by a woman. Do you actually listen to the ridiculous sexist crap that flutters through before typing it in on a keyboard or do you just spew?
There hasn’t been a woman GM yet, and that isn’t professional athletes fault. To fault them is complete idiocy.
Redstitch108
I agree completely. You just say it much better than me.

Lifetime Angels fan here. I will still love my Angles no matter what happens but it has been so painful to watch them playing in the last few years.
There are so many things that need to change I don’t even know how they can fix all of them; scouting, developing young players, player assessment, signing/not signing players, conditioning and strengthening, starting and relief pitchers, positional players, etc.
I hope that it can start with picking the right GM and less input from Moreno.
Halo11Fan
I’m not really sure why people think the Angels can’t develop young players. Do you think every team has four or five young superstar players? They don’t.
Too much signing is due to marketing. That’s why Pujols and Hamilton were signed. But do you think Rendon is a bad signing?
The Angels starting pitching isn’t that bad and it wasn’t the problem this year. I’d love to add another pitcher but the pen was the problem this year and everyone who watched Angel baseball knows this.
Relief Pitchers are not an after thought. Add a starter and two relief pitchers.
saintguitar
Well, look at the draft picks in the past several years and look where they are now. I don’t expect every young player to develop into superstars but I do want to see a Buehler, May, Gonsolin-like scouting and development in Angels uniform.
It is way too early to even discuss if Rendon was a good or bad signing.
I would like to see at least 2 established starters and 2 relievers added this off-season as we all know you can never have too much pitching.
Halo11Fan
I wouldn’t compare anyone to the Dodgers. They are in a league of their own.
But we can look at the A’s. When is the last time the A’s developed a pitcher? How about the Astros? How about the Mariners. How about Texas?
Like the Angels, they have pitchers with potential, but potential and breakthrough are two different things.
Vizionaire
i agree that we haven’t been producing as many mlb players as we all like but we won’t need 2 f/a starters as last year’s 1st round pick will come up to start. and f/a starting pitchers are not very good in upcoming offseason.

Goes to show you how clueless the organization is. They would of known in August what they were going to do with Eppler. The list should of been compiled before he left. Now late November? No hope for their fans.
Halo11Fan
What? Do you actually think Moreno wasn’t compiling a list of possible replacements before he fired Eppler?
Talk about a huge leap.
Angels & NL West
If Arte signed Eppler to an extension in July, it’s reasonable to believe he wasn’t preparing a replacement list in August. Having said that, August was a pretty bad month for the Halos. And a smart executive should always have a short list of candidates for key positions.
Halo11Fan
Eppler wasn’t fired based on how the Angels played in September, he was fired based on how they played in July and August.
I’d be shocked if Arte was not thinking about possible replacements in August.

“For him (Arte Moreno) not to have a say in his investment, or knowledge on it, I think it’s fair that he has discussions and communication with the general manager,” Carpino said. “In my opinion, he deserves to be a part of the process. He’s the owner”
And that tells me to expect more of the exact same moving forward, regardless who it is
John Kimble
Angels can have Klentak back & MacPhail. We’ll even throw in Cole Irvin.
wild bill tetley
Said this on another thread and I’ll say it here; Kim Ng at least played collegiate ball. Some GMs in baseball are nothing more than math majors from Ivy League schools who never played competitive ball at a high level. If baseball players can respect them they can respect a woman who played as far as she could before becoming a professional.
The Moneyball’esque stat nerds gives Ng a massive opening and should be embraced if they calculator warriors can be taken seriously as an MLB executive.
SportsFan0000
Dombrowski is the Angels best bet if you can get him and if you want to contend fast during Trout’s contract.. Arte would have to give up some control and authority to get him.
Stinky Pete
Great, just what the Angels fanbase needs: John Carpino and Arte Moreno making another five year decision. Look, I understand that we’re stuck with Arte, but why on earth do we have to settle for the likes of John Carpino and the other scummy yes-men in the Angels F/O? These guys are the absolute worst. Failure is inevitable when Ad-men run your franchise!
Even the Marlins/Expos under Jeffrey Loria had more respect around the league than Moreno’s Angels. From development, to player support, to scouting, to strength training, to nutrition, to analytics, to international presence, etc, etc…the Angels are a complete and utter failure. And don’t give me the “at least they’re spending money/trying to sign big free agents” excuse. This is bs. These decisions (Hamilton/Pujols) were not made to win more games. These were strictly marketing/advertising decisions. These were signings meant to sell ad’s and to close tv deals. It is what happens when ad-men make all the baseball decisions.
Just look at how the Angels handled Corona Virus compared to the rest of MLB. It is beyond embarrassing. And when you combine all of these issues with a think skinned, micro-managing, ego-maniac for an owner who rewards ass-kissing personal “loyalty” over talent/competence, this is what you end up with. With people like John Carpino, Arte Moreno, Dennis Kuhl, and Dana Wells making all of the major baseball decisions.
