A few notable injury notes from around the American League…
- Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman will resume baseball activities Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. It’s still unclear how much longer the AL West-leading A’s will go without Chapman, though. The 27-year-old has been out since he left their game Sunday with a right hip strain. Chapman batted a power-driven .232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs in 152 plate appearances before his injury.
- Blue Jays first baseman Rowdy Tellez is dealing with right knee discomfort and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday, according to Hazel Mae of Sportsnet. Tellez has been one of the bright spots for the playoff-contending Blue Jays, who have benefited from his .291/.355/.555 line en route to a 24-18 record.
- More on the Blue Jays, whose top reliever, Ken Giles, may be on track to return this weekend, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star tweets. Giles has only pitched twice this year – on July 24 and 26 – because of a forearm strain. The long absence could affect the 29-year-old’s earning power entering free agency, though the Blue Jays have carried on well without him. Their bullpen entered Tuesday ranked fourth in the majors in ERA and sixth in FIP.
- The Angels placed infielder Franklin Barreto on the injured list Tuesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com tweets. They recalled infielder Matt Thaiss in a corresponding move. Barreto, whom the Angels acquired from the division-rival Athletics for fellow infielder Tommy La Stella before the trade deadline, has struggled in his time in the majors and hasn’t provided any value to LA so far. Since joining the Angels, Barreto has collected two hits in 18 trips to the plate.

As much as it pains me to say so, the Blue Jays are definitely playing like the best team in NY this season. Maybe, it’s a mistake to go back to Toronto next season? Why not just stay in Buffalo?
bhd360
Because it’s Buffalo
Down with OBP
That’s the good stuff bhd360. It’s why I come here.
trendysayings
If they win the WS, they’re gonna stay in Buffalo and they’re just going to have to create an expansion team in Toronto
Le Grande Orangerie
Unlikely Toronto would get an expansion team. No proper stadium. No money for a new one.

Still the only retractable dome. I prefer it to shoeboxes with lids.
Frank Crosetti
No money? Are you kidding me?
Rogers who own the Jays have a license to print money❗️

You guys win Monday if Voit could play defense.
You guys push it to extras on Tuesday had you tagged on Davis’ arm in RF. One mistake aside, Happ gave you a good start.
The Yankees squandering victories should pain you even more.

@wild bill tetley- hey I’d stand on my head for ANY win right now. Maybe we can get one against the Jays with Deivi pitching tonight? But it won’t really matter If we don’t score any runs for him. It’s nice to see the Blue Jays playing well. Things are SO bad right now but I’m still really excited to see Deivi & Schmidty pitching in the majors. Their future’s both look bright.
wild bill tetley
Should be interesting with Deivi on the mound.
Blue Jays have shown a lot of talent in this short season. Although not having games in the minors hurts them, the short season has helped them ride this momentum. Hoping they can build off this the next few weeks and into next year.

There definitely is a changing of the guard in the ALE this year. It would be crazy if the Rays, Blue Jays, and Orioles somehow force the Yanks and Red Sox into the battle for fourth.

It’s time to bring back the Smoak Monster.
Technically correct
I think that would be a Lost cause.
jkoch717
I see what you did there

Biggio will play 3rd and Shaw to first, Espinal at SS, and the new VR to second.
DarkSide830
is that what they’re calling Villar these days?

NOBODY should be surprised that Barreto is a bust….. I think this was Eppler’s last fumble as the Angel’s GM …
solaris602
It doesn’t take 30 years around ML baseball to recognize that Barreto needs to cut down on his swing…..period. He literally swings as hard as he can every time. His two strike approach is to swing even harder. I’m guessing Eppler thinks he has someone who can fix that problem.
GeoKaplan
@solaris602 That is 100% correct, and the fault of the A’s for training him that way. Barreto has very good speed and simply getting on base would make him valuable to any team. He isn’t meant to hit 20+ HR in a season and he shouldn’t try.
The shift works in defense largely because so many player are swinging for the fences that their hits spray in a predictable area. If they would be taught to use the whole field, the shift would be useless and they’d have a better shot at the base hit. Most coaching staffs are in love with launch angle and spin rate.

The only person to blame is Arte Moreno. Angels really need a new owner, but that’s not gonna happen.
whyhayzee
I’m shocked that not one of these reports has a quote from the manager about the extent of the injury. I guess only the yankees with Dr. Error on Boone really know what’s going on with their players’ bodies.
smuzqwpdmx
The one little positive with the Tellez injury is it means there’s no need to wait for Bichette to build up stamina in the field or to rush him defensively. Just have Bo DH most of the time for his first week or two.
Birdieman2
Hey Angels, could you just not suck every year? That would be great.
