The 2021 MLB Draft will be pushed from June to July 11-13 and take place in conjunction with next year’s All-Star festivities in Atlanta, as first reported by Carlos Collazo of Baseball America. The length of next year’s draft still is not set in stone, but it will be longer than this year’s heavily truncated five-round event. The March agreement between the league and the MLBPA which called for the five-round draft also stipulated that the 2021 draft be at least 20 rounds, per the report. The same deferral of bonus payouts — $100K up front, followed by 50 percent of the remainder in each of the two subsequent years — will remain in place. Undrafted players will again be limited to a maximum $20K signing bonus.
The move to All-Star week gives MLB considerable marketing opportunities for the event, placing it at a time when much of the national spotlight will already be on Major League Baseball. The NBA and NHL aren’t currently scheduled to be in season at that time, and the delayed Summer Olympics aren’t set to begin until July 23. Also, because the draft will be distanced from the end of the college and high school seasons, more of the event’s top names should be able to attend in person.
Carlos Collazo and colleague J.J. Cooper point out that Major League clubs have long sought a pre-draft medical combine to gather more information on players in order to avoid scenarios that can play out when a draftee’s physical exam reveals medical red flags that prompt the team to alter its offer. Such instances — recall the ugly scene in 2014 when the Astros took issue with No. 1 overall pick Brady Aiken’s elbow — can be more public-facing than all involved parties would prefer and can have substantial trickle-down effects in a draft class. With the draft taking place weeks after the conclusion of the amateur season, however, some sort of medical combine seems much more feasible. Other promotional and scouting opportunities, such as tournaments or showcases involving the draft’s top names, could potentially be scheduled leading up the event as well.
BA also notes that the later nature of the draft date will lead to an uptick in the number of players who are eligible to be selected. Players are eligible if they turn 21 years old within 45 days of the draft’s scheduled completion, which pushes the cutoff threshold to Aug. 27. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel tweets out a series of prospects who would not have previously been eligible but now stand out as potential selections in the top five rounds of next year’s draft.
Marvels MAGA Man
Moving it to all star weekend isn’t really going to increase interest.
Only one of the 4 major sports that doesn’t allow trading draft picks, which. with 40 of them you’d think they let you trade some.
MLB wants to increase draft interest they need to cut it down to 15-20 rounds, let teams trade draft picks, and possibly do a lottery for top 5 picks where non playoff teams have a chance. Depends how cutting the rounds and letting teams trade picks goes.
Part of the fun of the draft is wondering if a team will trade up. In a year with Kumar Rocker generating so much hype trading picks and lottery would garner more.
RunDMC
Just as long as there are ping pong balls determining the placement of future stars. Why/when did pick trading stop?
LordD99
I agree. Trading of draft picks will increase interest. Still don’t know why it’s not allowed. Beyond that, I do think having it during All-Star week will overall increase interest because there is nothing else on to watch the Wednesday and Thursday post the All-Star Game. The length of the draft doesn’t matter. It’s day one when they’ll do the top rounds. Day two will just be for the real diehards.
lowtalker1
How so? These guy won’t make an impact if at all for 4 years
Prospectnvstr
Lowtalker: Casey Mize, Brady Singer & Kris Bubic would like to introduce themselves to you. Granted none of them have made an “impact” yet. 1st, 18th & 40th picks in the ’18 draft have been called up. Last yr: 21 GS between hiA/AA 26 GS between hiA/AA 26 GS between lo A/hi A respectfully. None of them were expected to be up to start the season but Mize & Singer were expected to be called up this season w “impact” expected in 2021. Bubic call up wasn’t expected until 2021.
johnnydubz
@prospectnvstr that’s because of this bizarre season that doesn’t have AA or AAA which is resulting in players being called up just to get play time. This season is extended spring training.
Prospectnvstr
That’s my point to lowtalker. He’s talking about draftees (not making an impact for 4 yrs, if at all). Two of the 3 I mentioned were EXPECTED/ANTICIPATING to be called up THIS SEASON. Even if we had a normal season, they probably would’ve started in AAA & AA respectfully and get called up in July or Aug. That’s just over 2 yrs of being drafted.
hiflew
It’s not 4 years for everyone, especially college pitchers, but on average waiting 4 years for a first round pick is about normal. Obviously some are quicker and some take even longer than 4 years like Derek Hill that just got called up today after 6 years in the minors. These guys COULD make an impact sooner than 4 years, but it would be foolish to go into the draft expecting it to happen.

I agree with trading draft picks but I still don’t think there will ever be big interest in draft day for baseball. With every player going into the minors for three or more years and college baseball not being nearly as big as college football, it will never be what the NFL is.
kodiak920
I agree with you. Part of the big reason the draft is so big in the NFL is we have all seen and know many of the players. College football is huge. In baseball, take a Harper, one of the most hyped players in draft history, how many people had actually seen him play before he was drafted? Baseball’s draft is more similar to the NHL draft than the NFL draft.
TC06
Spot on kodiak! College baseball not followed like college football. College baseball players are unknown and impossible to get excited about.
angelsinthetroutfield
The College World Series tournament is in late June so it aligns well with the new draft date. CWS can act as a showcase of sorts for the premier collegiate players.
Prospectnvstr
Why do MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of people watch AND are fanatics of COLLEGE FOOTBALL when so few of them make it to the NFL? After graduation the “best” HS fb players pick which NFL Minor League, I mean college they will attend. So, you’re practically watching minor league football (minimum 3 yrs per player). Then the “best” get drafted and then some of them are “busts”. Mlb draft includes HS,JUCO, & college prospects. Most players drafted out of college that make it to MLB do so within 2 full seasons. HS draftees have a lot longer road since they’re still raw, just like a TRUE FRESHMAN starting on a major college level team.
bkbkbkbk
You had me till non playoffs teams. No other league does it and baseball already has a parody problem with no cap.
Marvels MAGA Man
No other league? Thats literally how the NBA does it.
Anyone who doesn’t make the playoffs has a chance in the lottery.
16 teams get into playoffs, 8 per conference. 14 teams get chance at #1.
Hornets went from 8th chance to 3rd pick, Chicago went from 7th chance to 4th pick, but Detroit, Atlanta, and Cleveland went back in the draft.
TC06
Love the idea of trading picks! I don’t understand why MLB doesn’t allow this. I hate the lottery concept. Give the worst team the top pick.
hiflew
They don’t allow because they have a minor league system that is FULL of players to trade. Trading for an unknown quantity instead of an actual known prospect would only exacerbate the problem of teams taking too long for rebuilds. Teams right now are basically fodder for 5 years. I couldn’t imagine being a fan of the Orioles or Tigers for the last 3 years knowing before the season starts that my team isn’t going to even try to win. why would I watch? Say what you will about my Rockies, but at least they try every year, even if sometimes you wonder about them, such as when they lose 23-5.
Anyway, I digress. My point that if teams can acquire draft picks for major league players, those rebuilds would take even longer. Especially since of the 4 major sports, an MLB draft pick is BY FAR the least likely to make the highest level. Prospects can fail too, but at least they are closer and you have a better idea how they hold up against better competition than high school or college.
rangerslegend34107
The reason the MLB draft isn’t as interesting to fans doesn’t have anything to do with the ability to trade picks or not. It has to do with the fact that there is not immediate effect to the team. You take a QB in the first round or an uber talented forward in the NBA and there’s a good chance they will help win games their first season. In MLB, unless you follow minor leagues, prospect rankings, etc like we do the common fan won’t hear about the guy for another 2-4 years…or never again as a lot of guys don’t ever make it to the MLB.
Also, the MLB draft is different to the NFL/NBA as it is not always about talent or need level. Yes, talent is a per-requisite obviously, but the biggest thing next to talent a team takes into account is “signability.” Is the guy going to sign, or is he going to go to school? No sport is dictated by signability more than baseball.
Marvels MAGA Man
“Part of the fun of the draft is wondering if a team will trade up.”
Here’s what fans enjoy. Mock drafts, draft coverage, and Trades. Something they can speculate about. Fans enjoy the thought about teams trading up or trading down arguing about what to trade the pick for: players, current/future picks, or both.
Far as draft picks taking time to develop. You dont just have to trade draft picks for draft picks. You can trade draft picks for players too. You’d see more trades if teams were able to attach draft picks instead of just players and cash.
MLB should make all star weekend, the draft, the trade deadline coincide with each other. Draft is Thursday and Friday, all star weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Trade deadline Monday.
rangerslegend34107
MLB has mock draft and draft coverage. And you can trade picks–but they have to be compensatory picks. Teams do all the time. Still no one watches except us fanatics.
Marvels MAGA Man
Im sure there would be less interest in drafts if the NFL only allowed teams to trade compensatory picks and in the NBA if teams could only trade 2nd round picks. There’d also probably be less trades.
You don’t have to make all picks tradable, but they do need to make at least the first 5-10 rounds tradable.
Set a cap on total number of picks. For instance, a team can only have 20 total picks between the first 10 rounds.
stymeedone
The lack of immediate effect is secondary. College football has the TV contract with games being played on weekends, mostly. Visibility creates interest. Try watching your College baseball team regularly on TV. Not easy.

Aiken is a bust
LordD99
Upvote.
astros_fan_84
I’m so glad that that pick turned into Alex Bregman.
DarkSide830
yeah, might have worked out for the best to not sign Aiken
tigerdoc616
MLB draft is never going to be like the NFL draft where the players selected can have an immediate impact. Still, seems to make sense to dovetail it with the All-Star game.
Stevil
It will make the break more exciting, but it pretty much eliminates the possibility of short-season debuts.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I love the MLB draft. For the casual fan (which I imagine does not include most of us here), you probably nailed it, Doc. You’re not going to get the “what ifs” that come with picking a guy and seeing that potential immediate impact that other sports see.
I do like the idea of moving it to all-star weekend, though.
Superstar Car Wash
Why are we so certain MLB All-Star Week will even HAPPEN in 2021? This could be like this until 2024 or when a vaccine is able to be distributed safely.
COVID-19 is here to stay and it doesn’t care about our feelings or wonderful opinions, so don’t get your hopes up yet, and be more responsible MLB. COVID-19 isn’t over by any means, and next July isn’t a magic pill.
Briffle2
You should never leave home again. There’s tons of opportunities everyday to be infected with a variety of killer diseases. You’ll never be safe.
RunDMC
Of course not, but you can also look at that as a compliment to the complexity of the game and the separation between the high school/college game (aluminum bats, anyone?) and the pro game. College baseball is too slow for a mass audience and not taken seriously by the niche baseball traditionalists.
TC06
Here’s betting Covid mysteriously disappears shortly after the Presidential election!
elmedius
Yes… because it’s only in America. Right? Dumbest theory ever. If they’re faking it and it’s just a political tool, what do you think the rest of the world will do? “Oh silly America, what a good joke. Hahaha” sure.
imindless
Judging by other countries use of hcq they don’t have they same problems we have. A certain party doesn’t support its use I wonder why?
DarkSide830
politics aside, HQC should at least be allowed over the counter. many of these countries in question have hqc available over the counter. there is no reason that that at least shouldn’t be the case here as well.
DarkSide830
im not going to disagree that there is a heavy political aspect of the virus, but that just makes no sense. what, does one of teh candidates have the antidote up their sleeve? not buying it.
natsgm
Didnt realize the draft was guaranteed to be 20 rounds. Thats great for my team! No better year to lose big and get higher draft position than this crazy one
clepto
This could kill the rookie short season leagues if they dont push back the start of their seasons.
….and if you havent attended a Pioneer League game, you are really missing out a great baseball experience.
Rangers29
I want the Rangers to lose this season just so we can get Kumar. I hate this middle of the pack crap.
BTW, I don’t hate this change. You get to see more of the players in their college season, plus it might attract more people to the draft (though I doubt it). I hope this won’t take away from something like the futures game, because those events need attention.
imindless
@rangers29 looks like you might get to see Kumar often he might wind up on angels. Currently #2 overall behind Pittsburgh
Rangers29
We aren’t that far behind… Let me have some hope lol.
stymeedone
You can draft Kumar. I want the White Castles!
bobtillman
So they don’t allow trading of draft picks out of fear that a large market team will trade 4 minimum wage-low talent guys for one impact player, whom the small market team is hesitant to pay a huge bonus. Spending 5-7M on Kumar may sound sexy to Yankee fans, but can seriously hinder the Pirates long term abilities.
And interest in the draft will increase as the minor leagues become passe; plans are already in place to eliminate short season leagues all together for 2021. In the coming years, expect the same to happen to low-_A and high-A teams. The idea is consistent with what we know is true; keeping an MLB talent on the busses in the minors for 3-4 years just hinders their development and earnings, and is completely counter-productive. Again, it’s insane to think Joe Burroughs can make game changing decisions in the NFL in a split second, but Adley Rutschman can’t decide every 2 minutes or so what pitch to call for. Does Adley need more “development” time for his bat? Probably. But he’s going to get much better development, against better competition, on the MLB level than he’s ever going to get in Fredrick. As more and more players go directly from college to the majors, the draft will garner more interest.
Placing it away from the CWS and at the All Star game is looooooooong over due.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Bob, I feel as if you couldn’t be more wrong. If you want to make a case an elite level talent such as Rutschman may not need the minor leagues, you could possibly put together a decent argument. Here is the thing though- everyone isn’t Adley Rutschman. Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. You’ve got talented players coming out of the International market who are 17-19 years old, and they’re not ready to hit 99mph fastballs regularly. Where do they go? A good many stars have taken time to develop. That’s just the hitting side.
Pitching takes far longer to develop. Talented college kids that attend college and go through the minors take a few seasons in the bigs to hone their craft. You think any professional team is going to give them 5 years or more on a ML roster while posting ERAs north of 6.00 to figure it out?
You made a comp to Joe Burrows, but look what Cincinnati invested in him financially. He’s going to struggle at times with those decisions, but he’ll be allowed to fail because it’s not cheap to simply ditch him. How’d Ryan Leaf or David Carr work out though? It’s not the way the league ultimately develops players, it’s also the talent. What’s is broken about giving guys success and more chances to develop in a progression based system?
Vizionaire
totally agree.
bobtillman
But how do you know Casey Mize can’t come right out of school and get MLB hitters out? Where’s the logic? Where’s the data? I appreciate your points, but they smack a bit of the “well, we’ve always done it that way”. And yes, Burroughs will fail at times; most do. But he’ll learn from his failures (hopefully). So would Adley. But Burroughs won’t have to ride busses, eat tacos as a staple of his diet, live in a flea bag hotel, or be subject to coaches whose sole talent is getting along with the Farm Director. Or depend on underpaid teammates to help him (if they CAN help him) in his development.
Appalachian_Outlaw
The stats sorta show it though, don’t they? With 2 years of minor league ball under his belt, Mize is rocking a 6.75 ERA in the Bigs. Small sample size, I know. It’s hard to imagine however that he’d have been better 2 years ago. How many young pitchers with minor league time are fire out of the gate? There will always be outliers, but it’s not the rule.
I can appreciate what you’re saying about wanting to a better quality of living for these guys, but I feel like advocating for better minor league pay and perks would be more beneficial than calling for the abolishment of the minors.
The system you’d create without a minor leagues in place is one where your bottom 10 teams or so would be relegated to feeder teams. They’d develop these players for 5 years because they’d be in perpetual rebuilds, with losing being accepted. The guys would grow tired of losing, and then they’d bolt for greener pastures.
bobtillman
So following your logic, Mizw would have a 10.75 ERA if he HADN’T spent two years in the minors. And I would maintain the opposite is true; he wouldn’t have wasted weeks and weeks learning how to get lower-ability batters out, a talent that yields a talent for, well, getting lower ability batters out.
Vizionaire
the angels are going to draft top 2 if not top 1 the first time in years, hope they draft college pitchers in all top 10 rounds!
astros_fan_84
I like this. And I want teams to be able to trade picks. With a mid-July draft, teams with bad records could immediately sell for draft picks. Plus, buyers might prefer to use picks over prospects. This would create interest in the draft, and it would be good for the sport.
DarkSide830
i hope the league announces all stars at the end of the year. i feel even with no game the games’s best players should still be rewarded with a nod.
whyhayzee
If there’s a draft I just close the window. Who cares? I’ve known dozens of players in the draft over the years and I track where they go but I have zero interest in watching a bunch of commercials so I can see who the ____________ choose for their _____ round pick. BORING.
beersy
If MLB and MLBPA decide to allow trading of draft picks, they also need to bring in a declaring for the draft stipulation, like the NFL and NBA have. I would hate to see a team trade up to get the 1st overall pick, choose a highschooler and then have his advisor/agent say the kid didn’t want to be drafted by that team and go to college. I could see a guy like Boras play havoc with the draft. A “generational talent” could pretty much choose where he goes and could force the hand of the team who has the #1 pick. If picks where allowed to be traded, do you think there is any way Boras would have “allowed” the nationals to pick Harper? I don’t, I think a “forced” deal to a team like the Yankees or Dodgers would have be in the offing. Just my opinion.
lovableschmuck
How are the single A short season leagues supposed to stock their teams,if the draft isn’t until July? They normally start in mid June, just after the draft.Delay the season? Or stock the teams with marginal free agents,or non drafted players?
dshires4
I think MLB needs to do the opposite of what everybody here is saying. They don’t need to hype the draft when these guys are 2 years out, minimum. The casual Mets fan wasn’t buying Kelenic jerseys (sorry Mets) the same way casual Browns fans bought Mayfield merch. The nature of the drafted players just will never lead to hype.
The only thing MLB needs to do is allow the trading of draft picks. They don’t need to do anything else to make a boring draft “interesting.”
Jeff Zanghi
The note about players being eligible if the turn 21 within 45 days of the draft’s scheduled completion… is that supposed to be 18? … because clearly players are eligible to be drafted far before their 21st birthdays – as guys are drafted all the time out of HS — at times even as young as 17 (see Blaze Jordan who was just drafted by the Red Sox) — so I’m just curious if anyone knows what exactly rule is about draft eligibility I’d appreciate it because I actually have no idea how exactly it works. Though I do know there are also exceptions and ways around certain rules. (Again see Blaze Jordan who would’ve not been eligible until next year’s draft except that he ended up going to a community college early and thus made himself eligible a season sooner)
Jeff Zanghi
I was reading someone else’s comment that mentioned trading picks would increase interest. Which made me think… the MLB really should change that rule and allow draft picks to be traded… it really would make things much more interesting — both for the draft and also how it would play out in terms of trades throughout the entire season, especially like trade deadline situations. Imagine if teams were allowed to trade draft picks and at the trade deadline a seller could wind up stockpiling a bunch of draft picks — that would be really fascinating both at the time and then when the draft rolled around. And on the other side giving buyers the option of trading their first round pick to ‘go for it now’ would be a really interesting dynamic. With how much teams generally value their first round picks… having the option to trade them (or subsequent selections) would really bring a whole new (and I think fascinating) dynamic to baseball trades. Or even another hypothetical… Imagine a team that REALLY wanted the first overall selection… would they be willing to say trade their own first 5 round picks for him? Or even their like next 3 years of 1rd picks? And would a rebuilding team see that as an offer that was too good to pass up? I think it really would be fascinating!!
Patrick OKennedy
We still don’t know the draft order for the 2021 draft. What’s the big secret in announcing the format?
Are they using the winning percentage from 2020?
A lottery?
Some combination of 2020 and 2019 records?
Why not an announcement yet?
The March agreement stated that if any team played fewer than 81 games, the commissioner could alter the draft order. WELL? We’re waiting!
