The White Sox have inked left-hander Clayton Richard to a minor-league deal, per LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune on Twitter. He’ll report to the team’s alternative training site.
Richard, 36, has eleven years of MLB experience under his belt. He had a nice run earlier in his career before injuries intervened. Richard hasn’t found much success of late.
Last year, Richard took ten starts with the Blue Jays, limping to a 5.96 ERA with 4.4 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 over 45 1/3 innings. Given those most recent results, it seems fair to presume that the South Siders view the veteran southpaw as a depth option.
why
@DarkSide830
I just shake my head and hope he doesn’t step foot on GR Field this season.
depth…
Why not use Flores? Hahn stays ignoring his own system to bring in retreads.
Sox already have Jace Fry. They don’t need another bad lefty.
LOL. What a shrewd move. Speaks volumes as for the quality of their starting pitchers.
@Dogbone
About as shrewd of a move as the Cubs signing Ryan LaMarre.
@Megatron2005
They’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel this time. If he sees the field, the Sox are probably finished for the year.
I thought the same when they decided to keep Detwiler. But he’s been decent in the early going in relief. Perhaps they’re looking for more of the same from Richard. Beyond that, his signing could mean that Fry is about to be demoted. BTW: didn’t Richard start his career with Sox? I think he was shipped to San Diego in the Jake Peavy deal.
idk Megatron, they turned garbage lefty Ross Detwiler into one of the most dominant relievers of the COVID-19 era. Maybe they can do it again
As cliche as it sounds. You can never have too much SP depth
coming full circle from that Jake Peavy trade back in the day.
south siders see richards as, covid19 free
Sox just won the Peavy trade
Haha love it
Dumpster divin’ Rick
@Banesays
Very original. Never saw that one coming.
Well he can’t help but put it on every cubs post so I figured I’d return the favor. You are very respectable tho. One of the few non trolls on here I respect. Thank you for that. Genuinely.
@Banesays
First, thank you for the kind words.
Second, I apologize for jumping the gun. I assume it’s that Sox troll everyone’s complaining about. We’re having the same problem with Dogbone on the Sox threads. I really wish the moderators would get rid of these trolls instead of letting them instigate with impunity.
So, is this move just to add depth or is the Lopez injury more serious or will there be a pitcher taking a 14 day quarantine?
This guy is still pitching? Yikes!!!!!
Welcome back to the Sox, Clay.
For the record.
If he finds his way into the rotation, it means the team may have more starting pitchers on roster drafted by Kenny Williams than ones drafted by Rick Hahn.
Best QB in Chicago!
Lol
Man, remember when the same thing could be said about Charlie Ward & NYC?
Sadly, I *certainly* do.
4.4 K/9 with a 3.6 BB/9 is particularly ghastly. In order for that to be even remotely tenable a pitcher would need an extremely high GB% & an extremely low HR/9.
It’d be an interesting case study.
He was supposed to be the next “Great” QB out of the U of M, but got beat out by Chad Henne.
For sure!
I played football and baseball in Junior College. I always remember these kind of guys. (well…to be honest, I actually thought he went to Michigan State. The Google and you corrected my imperfect recall.)
If nothing else, MLB is reducing waste by searching through every dumbstruck they can find and recycling pre-loved objects
*dumpster
What the heck?? Back to the future year? Bring back all the guys we shipped out in bad deals? Is that Hahn’s plan this year?
