The White Sox have designated outfielder Nicky Delmonico for assignment, per a team announcement. His spot will go to outfielder Jarrod Dyson, whose previously reported acquisition from the Pirates has now been formally announced. Chicago also announced that second baseman Nick Madrigal has been reinstated from the injured list, with catcher Zack Collins and outfielder Luis Gonzalez both being optioned to the alternate training site in a corresponding move.
Delmonico, 28, was released by the ChiSox last year but found his way back to the club on a minor league pact over the winter. He appeared in six games this year, going 3-for-20 with two walks and two strikeouts. The former Orioles prospect has spent time with the South Siders in each of the past for seasons, hitting at a combined .224/.312/.384 clip. However, since a terrific rookie showing at the plate in 2017, Delmonico has mustered only a .210/.287/.326 slash.
Sox fans will surely be thrilled to welcome Madrigal back into the fold. The 2018 No. 4 overall pick and top prospect debuted earlier this season but separated his shoulder while diving into a base. He’s 5-for-17 to begin his big league career, but the Sox hope that Madrigal, who slashed .311/.377/.414 with 35 steals and a minuscule 3.0 percent strikeout rate across three minor league levels in 2019, will cement himself as their second baseman of the future.
White Sox just got a lot faster in 2 moves
Stain can’t hit a lick. Whose innings in the field will he take? Maybe Jimenez’.
*Dyson
In tight games late yeah or run for Edwin.
Fifth outfielder. Mainly a pinch runner. I’m just happy we finally got rid of Delmonico.
@RickHahnForPresident
Amen to that.
Are they admitting that Delmonico was a mis-steak?
Haha!
That was A-1.
I have a beef with this comment.
No, just that he was, well, done.
Yep, I hope Collins can improve his hitting vs major league pitching. Sox can use a big left handed bat off the bench.
In the meantime, extend McCann!!
Collins bat isn’t major league ready. His defense isn’t major league ready. Other than that he surely is an All-Star!
@Whifff
Ho, ho, ho, that was hilarious!
Actually his bat probably is major league ready, but it’s hard for a batter to get into any kind of rhythm when he plays once a week.
@Whifff
My apologies, I thought you were just trolling until I read some of your other posts. Sorry about that, my fault.
It’s all good 83!
How would you like him to do that when he never gets a legitimate chance to hit major league pitching?
When they stopped jerking him around last year, he did ok. He slashed .233/.343/.417 in September (71 PA), including a .324/.405/.568 slash in his last 10 games (42 PA). They should’ve given him AND Mercedes a shot last year. Then they would’ve realized they didn’t need to waste money on EE.
.233 ?! Wonderful…
.343 obp is the number you should be looking at which is pretty solid
First of all, all I said is that he did ok. Second, you really have no idea what you’re looking at if that’s what you’re taking out of the stat line. That OPS is only 29 points below what All-Star James McCann put up last year.
The White Sox got considerably better with their team defense and speed today without having to sacrifice much in the way of offense aside from a little power which they already have in spades.
@AaronSapoznik
Beautifully said.
Sox still have one open spot.
Who they gonna get?
The White Sox are at their full 28-man active roster allotment. 2B Nick Madrigal replaces C Zack Collins while OF Jarrod Dyson replaces OF Luis Gonzalez. OF Nicky Delmonico was not on the active roster but the White Sox needed his 40-man roster spot before adding Dyson.
Ok, that may be so. thx.
I saw 3 leaving and 2 coming.
Where will Yolmer end up when he reports to Sox?
Schaumburg…
Then someone else has to go?!
Jarrod Dyson can run, but he can’t walk. How many players have more SB’s than BB’s in their careers? All in all, though, not a bad move. He’s like Engel: glove and speed, but no bat.
Glad Nick’s back. He’s a nice upgrade at 2B.
Engel has improved at the plate this season. He’s a much better outfielder than Dyson and every bit as fast, though probably not as adept at stealing bases.
Madrigal as an upgrade at second? You’re relying on his reputation, not his performance over just a few games. Mendick has hit, and he’s been more than serviceable at second, but now he’ll go back to the bench. Let’s see if Madrigal can match or exceed Mendick’s game.
Well considering Mendick is a league average hitter, that isn’t a high bar to break
Sure it is. An average player at the highest level of the game is still VERY good and a very high bar to surpass. People often forget this fact when they are denigrating players. Why do you think so many prospects fail? It’s not easy to be league average.
Mendick well above the Mendoza bar…
and better than Grandal and Encarnacion.
@realsox
In the 5 games Madrigal has played in, he already has a 4-hit game. Not too many players can say that in the first 5 games of their career.
Grandal is slashing .262/.387/.459 in April. He is not even close to the problem. The problem is in RF (vs righties) and DH.
Not as good as McCann!
Extend McCann!!
Why should anyone but James catch Giolito?!
Right, that’s the case especially when they’re hitting at an average rate, and then also playing defense at an above average rate. Every team needs a couple of these guys in their lineup if they hope to make a long run…
Btw, I tried to tell you all earlier how awesome and stacked this White Sox lineup was going to be, and how competitive this team would be with their veteran additions..
Some agreed, most claimed they were still a year away from being a year away..However, I did NOT see the Padres performing as well, but I’m not entirely sure anyone truly saw that either…
That’s significantly better than anything James McCann has ever done…
You know why McCann is playing well? Because he isn’t asked to start everyday. He ran out of gas in the second half last year, and his numbers took a massive hit.
As to why should anyone but James catch Giolito, I couldn’t agree more. I said it MANY times before the season started and repeated it MANY times after game 1. There is no reason for anyone but McCann to catch Giolito right now, and I would love for them to resign him.
Dyson, Robert, Engle to close out games is some serious leather.
@Whifff
Yes, I agree. As much as I like Eloy, we won’t sweat nearly as much in the 9th when a ball is hit to LF with Dyson out there instead of Eloy.
Mendick has more than held his own, so nice to see he can fill in as needed for Madrigal and Moncada. Hope Giolito pitches Monday at Minnesota instead of Sunday vs KC. He needs to be in “big games” to overcome anxiety. Opening Day and packed houses vs Cubs last year were his biggest games so far and all bad. Doubt it is a coincidence, because he’s been brilliant otherwise.
Seems like the White Sox have an embarrassment of riches.
Package up some excess and make a big splash before the trade deadline!!
Not true, shutting out Houston and the Twins both on the road last year was very impressive
Those outings were impressive, but not circle the calendar games for either them or opponent when they were played. The Cub games come with pressure just b/c of the environment, and OD he was hyped up to get the nod against top rival. Vs Minnesota now would be a major test. There is such a thing as good pitchers being consistently way below their norm in big spots. Keuchel would be the most trustworthy in a game 1 until Giolito shows he can calm down. If he can do that Monday, it would be huge mental step to draw from later.
Great. Now do Ryan Goins.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Delmonico go to the Brewers and play some third base.
Why do you hate the Brewers so much?
Mendick did fine in Madrigal’s absence, but it’s great to have Madrigal back. He needs his development this year, so he can be better prepared next year when the Sox really take off.
Dyson will be a nice option as a defensive replacement/pinch runner in late close games. He’s not much more than that, but his role can potentially be important.
Nothing against Delmonico personally, I really wanted him to succeed, but it’s well past time to move on from him. Hopefully he’ll get a chance with another team.
It was probably for the best sending Collins down. He needs to be in the lineup every day instead of rotting on the bench 90% of the time. I think he can still do it, but he needs to be in that lineup at least 4 games a week. And something’s telling me EE’s about to catch fire (though I could be dead wrong on that prediction).
Wasn’t a bad move bringing up Gonzalez. Might as well see what he could do. Hopefully he can build on this and be good enough to make it back up, whether this year or next.
I’m sure it won’t happen, but I’d love to see Vaughn make it up in Sept. I’m sure we’ll have to wait until next year for that (probably May, unless they can coax him into signing a cheap long term deal over the Winter, which with COVID-19, I can’t see that happening).
