Right-hander Trevor Cahill will make his Giants debut Wednesday with a start against the Astros, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. The Giants will announce a corresponding roster move before the game.
Cahill signed with the Giants in the offseason as someone with a great deal of starting experience, but he was only able to score a minor league deal in free agency. He just joined the Giants’ taxi squad over the weekend.
At his best, the 32-year-old Cahill has been a productive starter for the Athletics and Diamondbacks, including as recently as 2018. Cahill threw 110 innings of 3.76 ERA/3.54 FIP ball with Oakland that year, but his numbers nosedived in 2019 as a member of the Angels, who inked him to a $9MM guarantee in free agency. He logged only a 5.98 ERA/6.43 FIP over 102 1/3 frames, most of which came out of the Angels’ bullpen.
Cahill will now attempt to rebuild his stock with another California-based club, San Francisco, whose rotation has been a mixed bag during its 8-11 start. Kevin Gausman, Drew Smyly and Logan Webb have been bright spots so far, but Smyly and Jeff Samardzija are on the injured list, which has helped open up an opportunity for Cahill.

I know there are a number of posters here that will complain about this. But, this about the same time that Cain and Lincecum came up. Baby Yaz is turning into a great hitter. Slater will be around. Luciano and Bart will form another great core.

The problem with the Giants farm right now is that we don’t have a Cain/Lincecum type pitching prospect. Webb is a good bet to become a solid no.3 starter, and Corry looks like a no.2 starter. My fear is that the Giants are going in the direction of being an offensive oriented team that will struggle to go deep into the playoffs, the exact opposite of their 2010s dynasty.

It’s true that there are no great pitching prospects in the pipeline. But SF has $$$ to buy starting pitching anytime.
solaris602
As long as they don’t waste that $$$ on the Jeff Samardzijas and Johnny Cuetos of the world going forward, that’s a plan

The cubs approach, build a farm of dominant hitters, overpay first pitching, be good for a few years before the check become due

But I’m right with you on Luciano and Bart, in fact I think the Giants have a top 3 offensive farm system. All their good prospects are hitters and all of them look like studs from what we’ve seen.

The kid from De LaSalle is looking pretty good. I’m also thinking that Slater and Yastrzemski could be be that lead off hitters that Bochy never had. The top club may suck. But, we got players to look forward to.

Who’s the kid from DLS?

I feel optimistic with Farhan Zaidi in charge.

They did just get that talented lefty kid that they overpaid for. Granted he’s in high school, I’d say there’s some sleeper pitching prospects for the giants. And just like the guys you mentioned they used to have an eye for pitching more than hitting not sure how much that’s changed with the front office changes.

need to do something about the defense-
not sure how you can guarantee finding a good defender and a good hitter in one player – often times it’s a trade-off

I was excited about bringing Cahill on board. I figured he could start some, do long relief some, just find a way to contribute 100ish quality innings. He was dreadful here.
Hopefully he fares better in SF, particularly against the Astros.

I kinda look forward to Angels hitting against him. It looked pretty easy for the other teams when he was on the mound.

Cahill…yikes.

Two years ago Cahill was more than a serviceable major league pitcher. Last year he was not even roster-able.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility he can be serviceable again.

He’s cheap fill in. No worse than seeing Drod or Saurez get their head handed to them again.

I agree with your concerns about Suarez, but I’d like for them to at least give the guy 4-6 starts this year unimpeded to see if he can string together enough consistency to be in the mix for the back end of the rotation next season.
As others have said, this team offensively and probably defensively has a bright future starting in ’22 onward. But Zaidi passed on stocking up the system with pitching this past draft aside from Harrison and the sleeper from Arizona, so they’ll have to mix and match over the next 3 seasons until they can populate the #3-5 rotation slots with their next-generation guys. Suarez could be part of that with Logan Webb, while they wait for Corry, Hjelle, Beck, and the ones they draft next year. As for DRod, dude has the stuff but not the head to be a consistent starter.
