10:19am: Major League Baseball has formally announced that tonight’s game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.
10:06am: The Reds’ schedule has been in a state of limbo after Saturday’s positive Covid-19 test(s), but they appear to be trending toward a resumption of play. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that tonight’s game against the Royals will also be postponed — as was the case with the final two games of this weekend’s series versus the Pirates — but the two sides will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Twitter links). The Reds’ most recent wave of tests came back negative, and they’re en route to Kansas City right now. However, the league will take the extra step of pushing back their return one more day.
It’s a point of frustration for some fans, but MLB has seemingly become more cautious with its scheduling in the wake broad-reaching outbreaks on the Marlins and Cardinals rosters. Both of those clubs saw new positives emerge well after the initial cases were identified. Miami had new cases six days after their initial positives, and the Cardinals had new positives more than a week after their initial cases became known. Other members of the organization tested positive along the way in those outbreaks, and that has not been the case with the Reds. But the league understandably hopes to avoid a third outbreak that wipes out more than a week’s worth of games.
Pushing today’s game into a doubleheader tomorrow won’t delay either club’s schedule, assuming the organization continues to test negative tomorrow. As for the makeup games against the Pirates, there’s no set date yet, although the two teams have a pair of series left on the schedule that present ample opportunity for makeup games. Their Sept. 4-6 series in Pittsburgh is currently scheduled to be bookended by a pair of off-days, and the Sept. 14-16 series in Cincinnati is followed by a Sept. 17 off day.
DarkSide830
fair enough, though youre relly putting more pressure on pitching staffs this way. might even want to expand the active roster or at least add an extra extra guy for doubleheaders at this point.
DarkSide830
*really
NFL's San Diego Waves
They do…
During a regular season teams can add a guy as the 26th man for a double header.
During this season they can add a 29th man for the double header.
DarkSide830
i mean more then a single extra man. perhaps 2 or 3 of them.
terrymesmer
> the 26th man for a double header.
FYI, starting this year, rosters were meant to be expanded to 26 for all games, not just doubleheaders.
The pandemic has got us at 28 players for all remaining games.
NFL's San Diego Waves
Idk if he’s the first ever, but Tyson Miller was the 29th man on a 28 man roster yesterday for the cards/cubs double header.
Technically correct
I doubt it, but wasn’t able to easily verify at the moment. Interestingly though, through 8/15, there were 14 double headers scheduled and only 6 had both games be completed. 2020 is going to have such crazy stats and info.
Halo11Fan
When players follow protocols, this works. When they don’t, it doesn’t.
We’ve learned that expecting teams of boys south of 30 years old to act like adults is a very tall order. Mostly they have done a good job.
Technically correct
Everything you said also applies to a lot of adults north of 30 too.
Halo11Fan
Technically correct.
Yes, but I can tell you from experience, as I believe almost anyone who was a boy in their 20s can, my 20s were a lot more wilder than any other decade of my life.
And if you think you are a man in your twenties, then it’s likely you are still in your 20s, or you are still not a man.
ekrog
Maybe once a reliable test is available. This thing is garbage
Indiansjoe
Hindsight beings 20/20, I guess it has been a good thing mlb didn’t work a lot of double headers in the schedule to get to 80 or a 100 games. I was 100% for it at the time. But how would you make up all these games if they had? Gonna be hard enough to get 60 in for some
Halo11Fan
It should have started a little earlier with more days off but the players were not interested in that.
The players didn’t want a shorter schedule, they wanted more games.
The players wanted full prorated salaries regardless of whether the season was cancelled or not.
And the players are the ones that have agreed to follow protocol and haven’t, yet somehow this is Manfred’s fault.
There are some people who will always blame management.
Indiansjoe
Manfred is a joke, the owners are greedy, and I will never understand why people take up for billionaires. Manfred’s handling of almost every disciplinary action is pathetic. It worked out not scheduling double headers, but I will never shed a tear when an owner looses money. He ain’t trying to help us at all.
DocBB
And the MLBPA rejected a bubble….they are the most entitled Union in all of baseball.
Halo11Fan
Thanks Indian Joe, you proved my point.
Halo11Fan
DocBB Yes, that’s another thing.
kodion
DocBB
The umpires do pretty well in their brotherhood, too
Indiansjoe
What point? That people blame manfred? If you think he has handled the multiple cheating scandals, including the ones he has tried to cover up, then you are sad excuse for an fan. It extremely hard for me to decide who should be fired first, manfred or goodell.
hiflew
Owners are providing you with cheap entertainment. Without the owners, they would still be rich and players would be working in factories or selling cars, because most only have a high school education. Fans would be watching a lot of movies and wishing there was something else to do with their time. Cities would have a lot less tax revenue because who wants to go to Cleveland or Cincinnati or St. Louis without sports there. Gamblers would have to be productive members of society. Okay so maybe there would be a little upside to no pro sports.
Halo11Fan
Yes, that no matter what happens, people blame Management.
Management is no more into self interest than the players Union and by extension the players. That’s the way these things are. Management doesn’t care about the players, and the Union doesn’t care about management or the health of the product.
Yet somehow it’s ALWAYS management’s fault.
Indiansjoe
They aren’t doing it to provide cheap entertainment, they are doing it to make 100s of millions off marketing and sales.
Halo11Fan
Indiansjoe
So?
Indiansjoe
Of course it’s always management’s fault, fault is part of their job. Are you that naive? It isn’t the union’s job to care about management, it is management’s job to care about the players. Because not one person ever bought a ticket to see an owner, the players are the sport.
Halo11Fan
“Of course it’s always management’s fault, fault is part of their job.”
Thanks for making my point. I don’t know how to make it more clearly. Some people always blame management for everything. Now you are saying the blame is justified, but you don’t deny my point.
Indiansjoe
Lmao, you have no point. But have a good day.
Halo11Fan
I say some people always blame management, you agreed with my point, yet I have no point.
I’ll leave it at that.
HalosHeavenJJ
Yeah, that’s not how collective bargaining works at all. MLB proposed two bubbles, the union rejected the idea. they ultimately came up with a proposal the two sides agreed on. Fault is spread around if you don’t like the protocols and the fault for players breaking them is 100% on the players.
hiflew
EVERY business on Earth does it to make money. No one owes you anything. The people at McDonald’s are not there because they like feeding you. The people at your local clothing store are not doing it so you can look cool. Soldiers are not risking their lives for freedom, they are doing it for the big paycheck. Everybody works because they get paid to work. Otherwise no one would work for anything other than providing for themselves.
Bigball11
You’re quite stupid dumb assjoe
DocBB
MLB is overreacting here IMO. Difference is the Marlins and Cardinals had multiple initial positives followed by multiple additional positives in the immediate days thereafter.
Reds situation had neither of these. They had one positive and no additional positives for at least 3-4 days.
Halo11Fan
DocBB. We don’t know.
We don’t know who or how many tested positive. We don’t know if protocols were broken, how they were broken or how many players were involved.
It’s hard to say someone is overreacting when we know very few of the facts.
DocBB
Yes we do, Heyman and other s have reported NO NEW POSITIVES for several days in a row now. Did you even read the article?
Halo11Fan
That’s not enough information for me to say “start up”. But for you a reporter saying no new cases is enough.
You don’t even know what “several” means, but yet it’s enough.
From the link:
“Both of those clubs saw new positives emerge well after the initial cases were identified. Miami had new cases six days after their initial positives, and the Cardinals had new positives more than a week after their initial cases became known”
We don’t have enough information.
Beans
Be patient, Doc.
We can’t *disprove* that the Covoogeyman is hiding under under Manfred’s bed.
marcfrombrooklyn
The problem is that it can take up to 14 days for someone who was exposed to be contagious and test positive.
hiflew
So why isn’t every team waiting for 14 days? There is a chance that any of them could have been exposed by someone. If that is the case, then we shouldn’t be playing at all. I don’t think it is THAT bad. Definitely concerning, and I know there is potential for grave danger, but we can’t just stop living in order to not die either. Living life is risky, but with proper safety precautions taken, we should be able to mitigate the risk.
A single positive should never cause postponement. Quarantine the individual, anyone else showing symptoms and anyone else choosing to quarantine, keep testing everyone else, but keep playing. If there happens to be another non-quarantined positive in the next few days THEN postponement should be warranted. Until then, it is not a team outbreak, it is an isolated incident.
HalosHeavenJJ
MLB is clearly giving up on making every team play 60 games. Get to a decent number and use winning percentage has to be the thinking now.
That said, one extra day of caution followed by a double header is fine.
Technically correct
Anyone upset by this clearly does not have their priorities straight. Good call MLB.
hiflew
Just because someone disagrees with MLB’s call does not mean their priorities are incorrect. It is possible to disagree with certain tactics along the way while still wanting to protect people. There is more than one way to do things.
mike156
Postponing and rescheduling on the fly may be difficult and disruptive, but it’s really an essential tool in getting through whatever season they hope to get through. It’s nice to have baseball back, even in this strange state. If the owners and the players can continue safely, great, and we can enjoy it as a distraction from the rest of this crazy world. If safety protocols break down, then they cancel. In the meantimes, I’m not going to criticize trying to adapt.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. Baseball, like the rest of us, is trying to do the best it can do.
