The Orioles have dealt relief pitcher Mychal Givens to the Rockies, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Along with Tommy Milone, Givens is the second key pitcher the Orioles have traded away today. In return, the Orioles will receive Tyler Nevin, Terrin Vavra, and a player to be named later, as first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Givens has returned to the setup role after struggling as Baltimore’s closer for much of last season, converting just 11 of 19 save opportunities. 2019 was clearly Givens’s worst season since debuting in 2015, but this year he’s once again showing the form that allowed him to excel as Zack Britton’s right-hand man just a few years ago.
Through his first 13 innings of work this year, Givens is sporting a 1.38 ERA and an even 1.00 WHIP, which is supported by career-best strikeout numbers and a 3.17 K:BB ratio. His strikeout rate has climbed up to 38%, and while his walk numbers are up slightly from years’ past, it’s not enough to induce panic. Opponents’ batted-ball results are much improved over last year, aligning more closely with Givens’s 2017 season, when he was at his best. Givens relies heavily on a four-seam fastball that sits right around 95 mph, also utilizing a mid-80s slider and a changeup.
By acquiring Givens, the Rockies hope to strengthen a bullpen that is currently producing to the tune of a 5.81 ERA, the third-worst in all of baseball. For what it’s worth, that number is quite a bit higher than the unit’s 4.22 FIP, which is roughly middle-of-the-pack, but the fact is that the Colorado ’pen has not done well to prevent runs this year. With Scott Oberg out for the year and Wade Davis on the injured list, it’s a thin unit that has had to rely on inexperienced arms like Yency Almonte, Carlos Estevez, and Jairo Diaz.
At first blush, it looks like a pretty solid haul for the O’s in exchange for their top reliever. In Vavra and Nevin—two 23-year-olds—Baltimore is getting the Rockies’ No. 7 and No. 14 ranked prospects, respectively (courtesy of MLB Pipeline). Nevin is strictly limited to corner positions (experimenting with the outfield last year after beginning his career at third base), and is a bat-first player with solid plate discipline and the ability to make hard contact to all fields. His 13 home runs at Double-A last year tied a career high.
Vavra, meanwhile, was the Rockies’ third-round draft choice in 2018, and projects as a middle-infield type, with second base perhaps his best fit at the Major League level. He’s likewise known for his bat, a line-drive hitter with advanced bat-to-ball skills who walked as often as he struck out last year. A switch-hitter, his hitting talent has been on display in the year and a half since he was drafted, though he’s only reached as high as A-ball.

Don’t know why the Rockies are Buyers,
lowtalker1
Right
phnxdark23
They’re currently a playoff team, and very much trying to convince Arenado that he shouldn’t be trying force his way off the team because they can contend. We’ve seen crazy things happen in the playoffs….if you can get in, you’ve got a chance.
fred-3
They’re only a game in the loss column behind the Padres
lowtalker1
They won’t catch the padres. The padres are a better team.
seamaholic 2
Maybe. Everything going right for the Padres right now. They’re not this good and still very young.
Orel Saxhiser
The Padres picking up Mitch Moreland is huge. It’s gonna force the Dodgers to do something. They are talking with the Brewers about Hader, but could really use a Game 3 playoff starter.
hiflew
Odd that they have beaten the Padres 3 out of 5 times this year. The Padres are not a better team, they are just a more hyped team.
lowtalker1
I think you are missing a key fact
Their bullpen is a dumpster fire after losing key people
80% of their loses have come from the pen
Simodine
Padres do have a better record.
With that said I do think the rockies can make the playoffs this year.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Huge. Ginormous. Gigante. Meh.
redmatt
I game back with just shy of half the season to go…and you say they can’t catch them?
agentx
I’ve always believed that the Rockies should acquire reasonably priced pitchers via trade whenever possible, since it is so hard to develop arms at altitude and even more difficult to attract quality free agents.
We’ll see from the Orioles’ return whether Givens was “reasonably priced.”
bobbyk 2
Feel they could turn Givens into better prospects elsewhere? Maybe in turn to someone like Cubs?
BKS1110
The Rockies are one of the few teams left that can’t seem to bring themselves to rebuild. They’ll continue as they have for years; 4-5 years of crap, then a luck-fueled-but-ultimately-fruitless playoff run that convinces ownership they must be doing something right, and they continue on like that without ever really building a truly championship-quality roster.
SashaBanksFan
Sounds like the Angels, but the Angels can’t even get a luck-fueled run. And I’ve been a fan of them my entire life.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
My sympathies. Despite signing big name FAs, Angels never go anywhere. This year is yet one more example.
angt222
They intended to contend this year despite not signing a major league FA this offseason. Also, they are probably trying to appease Arenado who was vocal about his displeasure with the club not doing more to try and win in 2020.
Say What Dawg?
My thoughts exactly. Maybe Bridich could no longer stomach the misery of that joke of a bullpen.

There have been a lot of trades today. A solid relief pitcher. Hopefully, he pitches well for the Rockies.

Great things happening in Baltimore, throughout the whole organization. I’m confident they’ll get a real nice return here.
User 2997803866
The new leadership in Baltimore has done a great job beginning this rebuild. This is a great haul for Givens. The fact they got anything for Milone was also great.
pittsburghbob69
I agree and Pirates have had winning, play-offs season’s, recently with A.McCutchen, N.Walker, J.Harrison, Pedro Alverz, Russell Martin, AJ Burnett, C.Gole, F.Liriano teams. And what good is M.Givens the rest of this and next year?? Baltimore got a good return and 2 good prospects w/ years of control.
agentx
Givens has only rebounded from a bad 2019 with about a dozen strong appearances, so it’s probably a good idea for them to have sold high now than risked regression later this season or the first half of 2021.
RedFraggle
Yeah, building the farm and increasing international outreach and scouting is a recipe for disaster.
Rangers29
This is something I posted on one of the Lance Lynn articles yesterday:
“Question: Which team this deadline is going to make a 2018 Pirates esque “We are barely contending, let’s go get a guy” type move? Will there be any? I say the Rockies, and maybe the Phillies (again).”
I’m right again lol.
dabrewcrew
Over half the NL is around .500 I wouldn’t say we’re barely contending
mlb1225
Them, or depending on what the Giants do. They said they probably will buy more than sell as much as that would probably not be the smartest idea to me. But I feel Farahan knows what he’s doing.

I’m thinking about the Travis Snider for Steven Brault trade, or the Gerardo Parra for Zach Davies trade in 2015, two trades that didn’t have to happen because that team was not good and the Orioles should have been sellers.
coachdit
Good ole Duequette. He was on the BlueJays payroll back then. Till Angelos blocked him from quitting to be their GM. And that’s when we got the mighty Travis Snyder to replace our Cruz missile.
Lovinmlb
These moves are hardly giving up 3 top 100 prospects. If you have a chance to contend and can move prospects that have little to no value to you that another gm thinks can be something you make the move. Players are playing hard through this crazy season so throw them a little bone. Anything can happen with a month left. I like the Phillies chances better.

Phil’s kid. Talented hitter who hasn’t delivered yet, doesn’t really have a position other than 1B and is totally blocked in Denver.. But still young for his level.

Thanks; I was wondering if he was Phil’s boy.
wild bill tetley
Decent return for the O’s IMO.
Orel Saxhiser
It’s probably better than what they got for Machado. They should have traded Manny before that season, not at the deadline. As a Dodger fan, I was happy that Friedman refused to include Verdugo in that trade. As it turned out, it led to the Dodgers acquiring., Proper timing is the key in trading prospects. I’m thinking we’re about to see that with Gavin Lux. Still an outstanding prospect, but the Dodgers need a pitcher.
JohhnyBets67
No it isn’t even close to being better than what they got for Machado. A ridiculous comment on its face.
coachdit
Well said Johnny. Watch out for Pop next season
Ra
Wrong. Yusniel Diaz alone is a better prospect than Nevin & Vavra & ptbnl combined. Though this is a good return for Givens.

Feel bad for Givens. This will hurt him come free agency. No pitcher wants to be traded to Colorado.
pittsburghbob69
Wow, Baltimore got a lot back.two good prospects for this year and next of M.Givens. I like the return Baltimore got. I’m a fan of Nevin and sons of former MLB players. Just like Biggio, Bichette, Vlad. Jr, K.Hayes. I think they usually have a good work ethic. I like Clemens’s kid, Kody, too. I wish the Pirates would have traded K.Kela for T.Nevin. And I hope the Pirates are able to steal away Kody Clemens from Detroit somehow..lol.
Orel Saxhiser
I like it too. Getting more for Givens than they got for Machado shows how bad that organization had been run. It also shows that they are righting the ship. Baltimore (and Pittsburgh) need to have good teams. A couple of fantastic ballparks.
JohhnyBets67
Cey hey…… this is ridiculous. Please stop.
Yusniel Diaz was a consensus top 100 prospect when traded. They also received Dean Kremer, a likely rotation piece, Rylan Bannon, a potential platoon 2b/3B, and Zach Pop. Pop was a solid relief prospect before getting TJ.
pittsburghbob69
People forget, Pittsburgh recently had some good years and good teams. With McCutchen, N.Walker, Josh Harrison, Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin, AJ Burnett, G.Cole, F.Liriano, M.Melancon. We just ran into a buzz saw and Mad Bum in the play-offs. I remember one Wild Card game. I think it was 3-0. Mad Bum vs. G.Cole. MadBum shut us out..lol(but at the time he was shutting everyone out in the play-offs).
pittsburghbob69
We had McCutchen, S.Marte, G.Polonco, Pedro Alverez, Neil Walker, Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison, Russell Martin. AJ Burnett, G.Cole, F.Liriano, I.Nova. M.Melancon.
Lovinmlb
I dunno Bob. It’s hard to forget when you keep reminding us.
Marvels MAGA Man
Machado: rental for what 2 months + playoffs + no QO.
Givens: 1 more year of arb.
Situations aren’t really comparable.
jbigz12
The situations aren’t comparable and neither is the return. It’s a strong relative return for a non elite reliever but it isn’t the package we got for .5 year of Machado.
Diaz was a significantly better prospect at the time than either Vavra or Nevin is. Vavra is comparable value wise to what Dean Kremer was. Nevin is probably slightly better than Rylan Bannon or Pop. But we got both of them for Machado. Not really comparable.
coachdit
Schoop and Gausman would qualify as good comparison here. All traded with 1.5 to go on their team control.
Ra
You are embarrassing yourself, Cey Hey, with your indefensibly foolish “assessment” of talent/
UGA_Steve
Agreed, A much better get than I would have thought. Granted, those guys had potential blocks in front of them in Colorado, but still, a very good haul for a middle-tier reliever (at best).
bobtillman
I saw Nevin play in AA; O’s fans are going to love him. Genuine butt-kicker like his old man, always taunting the other team. A little rough around the 3B bag (like h daddy), but some definite right handed pop. Reminds me of when Schulman asked “Does Calvin Biggio EVER make a fundamental error?”. To which Buck replied, laughing, “Ya, just like his dad ever did”.
Vavra’s always been old for his league, but has put up some decent numbers. His dad has a connection too; works for the Tigers. A little shaky with the glove, but at this point I think we can assert Elias doesn’t give a poop about defense.
And another guy? Orioles dun good, especially for an in and out guy like Givens.
stymeedone
Kody doesn’t look like much of a prospect. Make an offer.
hiflew
I hope Givens is worth it. That is a good return for a reliever. Nevin is easily replaceable, but I was looking forward to watching Vavra in a couple of years.
But I guess you have to give up talent to get talent. No major complaints here.
DarkSide830
wow, nice return
jbigz12
Givens needs to be in a park like SD or Kansas City. You know somewhere that isn’t a HR haven.
That’s been his issue. Givens does have a really good arm but I can’t imagine the HR issues don’t elevate in Colorado. If they don’t then they got themselves a solid set up man. He seems to struggle when closing though.
hiflew
Every pitcher cannot pitch in pitcher’s paradises. Just like every hitter doesn’t get to play in Colorado or Cincinnati or Arizona.
Colorado’s HR rate is actually not as high as many believe. It’s still high. but the size of the outfield that allows more base hits to fall in is the “real” Coors effect.
jbigz12
You don’t say. I thought you could just pitch in KC all year if you wanted……
I’ve watched givens for 6 years. Colorado seems like a questionable fit for him. Givens is a pretty extreme fly ball pitcher.
hiflew
No need to get snippy. Some people around here act as if no pitcher deserves the purgatory of pitching in Denver. I’m sorry for assuming you were one of them.
AssumesFactNotInEvidence
No need to get snippy! Nice…welcome to the world of jbigz12’s posts. They all start with an implied “Yeah verily, “. Don’t question jbigz12 okay?
Now for some stats:
Givens HR per 9 innings vs MLB HR per 9 innings:
2020 0.7 (Givens) vs. 1.4 (MLB)
2019 1.9 vs 1.4
2018 0.5 vs 1.2
2017 1.1 vs 1.3
2016 0.7 vs 1.2
2015 0.3 vs 1.0
So, see there in 2019, Givens HR9 was higher than league average and therefore something or other per Mr. Yeah Verily…
AssumeFactsNotInEvidence
Sorry Jbigz12. My wife hasn’t let me touch her in ages. My frustration comes out on my keyboard…. Please forgive me.
jbigz12
Sleepy Joe is back with his difficult to decipher ramblings.
But yes, Givens issue arose last season. I’m not convinced they’re cured after 13 whole innings this season. He gives up a ton of fly balls and they have a way of carrying in Colorado. Don’t love the fit and I really hate the GM in Colorado. I’d wager Elias got the best of him here.
Hope Colorado doesn’t want to use him in the 9th either. He’s been much better as 7th-8th inning guy.
Diggydugler
People pay way too much for relievers.
wild bill tetley
Especially for a team that should have considered selling.
hiflew
Why should any team that is currently IN the playoffs sell? Just because they were bad last year due to injuries doesn’t take away from the fact that this is pretty much the same Rockies team that made the playoffs in 2017 and 2018. Even if they “only” get the 7 or 8 seed, all they have to do is win 2 games out of 3 to knock out the Dodgers or Braves or whoever. That’s not out of the question. Especially since there will be no fans and no real home field advantage this year.
wild bill tetley
Because they are in a good position to reload for 2021. I should have said soft sell. Rockies still aren’t a synch for the playoffs either.
hiflew
I disagree. Over half the league are making the playoffs this year. Who knows how many make it in 2021. The owners probably want to keep it this way, but it may go back to normal. In which case, the Rox have a much better shot this year instead of next.
wild bill tetley
Yes. And in the midst of your optimism your Rockies continue to backslide. You’re trending in the wrong direction.
hiflew
At least they are trying. I would much rather them try to make the playoffs and fail than be close like the Orioles and just say who cares let’s sell because we weren’t ready to be good this year.
jbigz12
Anybody else remember when Phil blocked a trade to Baltimore?
I’m sure he’s loving his son being on the move here.
VTGiant
Man, can’t believe what they got for this guy…MUCH better haul than for Manny. Go O’s!
seamaholic 2
Not really. Don’t be confused by the organizational ranks of these two dudes in the Rockies system. The Rox system is pretty down at the moment, and two guys from them is a LOT different than two guys from the Dodgers a couple years ago.
Nevin is probably a 1B only (poor 3B and is trying to learn OF). Good hitter but hasn’t shown anything spectacular yet. Probably wouldn’t be as highly thought of if his dad wasn’t Phil Nevin. Vavra is just a dude, a polished college hitter burning up the low minors who projects as a bat first utility guy if he makes the big leagues. I think the O’s could have done better.
Say What Dawg?
Vavra is going to be a quality contributor in the majors. Nevin, to me, is a JAG.
Ra
Wrong VT. Diaz & Kremer > Vavra & Nevin (who has the lowest chance of making the majors of all four.). Pop > ptbnl. Machado returned far higher quality prospects than did Givens, unsurprisingly.
miltpappas
Why are the O’s trading for hitters? The reason they’re awful is their penchant for loading the roster with home run hitters and ignoring pitching. Great. They’ll hit 250-plus HRs next year. And finish 14th or 15th in pitching and end up in last place again.
deron867
They need infielders in the minors. They have lots of arms right now
Ra
You don’t follow the minor leagues, obviously, miltpappas.
Dalton1017
excited to see what the Rangers get for montero now
jbigz12
Colorado’s system isn’t especially strong. Vavra is probably around 10-11th in the Orioles system. Great #’s but we’re talking about a 22 year old in the SALLY league. Hopefully the tools translate up the ladder.
Nevin is a corner only guy who had a down year and hasn’t flashed the pop yet anyway.
kwolf68
It’s an OK return for the Orioles, but nothing special. Nevin is a righty hitting 1B with meh power. His profile just doesn’t show much upside. The other kid is 23 still in A ball. He has a nice profile and hit tool, but limited power probably a platoon/role/bench piece.
Orioles got two guys who I do think will make the show, but probably in a limited, parttime, AAAA type role. Could there be more for either? Maybe Nevin can find some more pop, he is pretty young (21 in AA last year) so there is growth potential there. Maybe he will profile better in LF and they move Mountcastle to 1B.
jbigz12
Doubt that. Nevin’s physical traits are equivalent to Mountcastle. It’d be a lateral move at best to swap them defensively. The O’s should have a number of OF options in the bigs shortly anyhow.
McKenna, Mounty, Hays, Mullins, Santander, and Diaz are all realistic options next year. Then you have Kyle Stowers and Kjerstad as 2 others who aren’t that much further off as well.
Nevin doesn’t like a guy who would have much of a future here unless we see a pretty large uptick in power. But we certainly need MIF’s. The PTBNL could be a decent piece to add to the deal as well though. Hopefully it’s a real prospect and not a throw in.
geotheo
He was in A ball last year. At 22. Drafted in 2018. So he’s only had 1 full year in the minors. Since there is no minor leagues this year, no way to know where he would have been this year. The fact that he was in the Rockies satellite camp, shows they were high on him
dtrainriotmaker
Why are they not reporting the Jose Martinez trade to the cubs ? And Mitch Moreland to the Padres ?
Ashtem
They did.
jbigz12
I guess that leaves Alberto and Severino as the two most valuable trade chips. Neither one necessarily needs to be on the move this year though. This may be the last we hear from the O’s at the deadline.
Dumpster Divin Theo
The last we hear from the Os this decade.
User 3218710645
I think Iglesias too. With the other two it really depends on the return. I don’t want to just give them away but like you said their values are higher than they have ever been. I think they have done well today and hope they have at least one more up their sleeve.
jbigz12
Agree with you. Iglesias is a possibility if they want to sell high and play Martin there next season. I dont know who is in need of a SS though. The returns on the type of SS that Iglesias is have been pretty weak in recent years. Galvis was given away last season. I’d prefer we hang onto Iglesias if it’s going to be for little to nothing.

Great move for both teams,O’s boost farm system, Rockies get a good reliever who has pitched in a hitters park and against top teams. He will help, though Rockies need another one yet.
Say What Dawg?
I really like Vavra as a prospect and am fine giving up Nevin. The player to be named will be interesting.
Hopefully Givens won’t be the next pitcher to fail at Coors. I don’t think the Rockies are a playoff team even with the field now expanded but nice to see the FO try to improve the team.

Toss up as to which team is the most poorly run team in MLB among those who envision themselves as contending each year: Rockies or Angels?
My vote? Angels by a whisker, but truth be told, they’re both badly run teams..

Givens should have been moved two years ago, not when the candle has about burned itself out. This is par for the course in Charm City. It doesn’t matter who is the GM.
I wonder why? No I don’t. I don’t care.
