The Phillies announced Thursday that right-hander Edgar Garcia has been designated for assignment, while center fielder Adam Haseley has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left wrist sprain. The moves pave the way for the promotion of top prospect Alec Bohm, whose first call to the big leagues was reported earlier in the day. He’s batting sixth for the Phils tonight and playing third base.
The loss of Haseley for at least the immediate future likely means Scott Kingery and Roman Quinn will share time in center field. Bohm, the No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft, should get a legitimate audition at the hot corner, which will mean Jean Segura seeing extra time at second base. Haseley had been out to a hot start in 10 games, slashing .333/.364/.429 in 22 trips to the plate. Since debuting in 2019, the 2017 first-rounder has posted a .272/.327/.399 slash while playing quality defense in the outfield. Kingery’s versatility helps to cushion the loss, but the Phils will obviously be hoping for an abbreviated absence for the promising 24-year-old.
Garcia, meanwhile, hasn’t pitched in the Majors this year. The 22-year-old made his big league debut with last year’s Phillies, compiling 39 innings but pitching to an ugly 5.77 earned run average. Walks were a huge flaw for Garcia, who whiffed 45 hitters in that time but also yielded 26 free passes (in addition to four wild pitches). He does have strong numbers in the upper minors and a minor league option remaining beyond 2020, so it’s possible another club could take a look at Garcia either in a small trade or as a waiver claim.

i would have preferred if the team had designated some of the guys they more recently have before they did so with EDLS.

Right?? Seems odd.

I’d like to see the Red Sox take a flier on Gonzalez. He’s only 22/23 and has demonstrated legitimate K ability. Sure his control leaves something to be desire but based on how (incredibly) little K-ability their current pitching staff has — adding anyone with the potential T-parking strike guys out should be a priority — especially a guy with a minor league option who’s as young as Gonzalez is.

Do you mean Garcia? Or are you talking about a player not mentioned in the article?
Dorothy_Mantooth
Yes, he meant Garcia, not Gonzalez
DarkSide830
i tell you what, while Garcia’s 2019 numbers arent terrible for a rookie out of the pen, he never looked too comfortable on the mound and probably wasnt even as good as his ERA shows. it also is telling that he was passed over for a call up by guys like Austin Davis.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Couldn’t agree more. This is a perfect, low cost addition for the Sox who is still young and throws the ball hard. This is exactly the type of player the Sox should be taking a chance on instead of these soft tossing, high spin, high ERA guys they collected. Get in done, Chaim!

and id love to say we’ll miss Haseley but the fact is he doesnt get given enough starts. he could hit 1.000 and he would still only get platoon at bats for some reason. meanwhile Cutch can’t hit to save his life and Haseley is on the bench.
VonPurpleHayes
Cutch has been hitting a bit more lately, but I agree with your point. In a 60 game season can you afford to let your veterans ride out their slumps? Haseley has been pretty solid. Kingery, Segura, Hoskins and Cutch…not so much.
DarkSide830
there is some absurd enamourment from both fans and the team around Cutch. the fact is is that he’s getting deeper into his 30s and is coming off an ACL injury. the insistence on making him play every day – and at the top of the order no less – is astounding. i will say Cutch has won me over throughout his tenure – i didnt think he was worth the money at his age when he signed – but its worth recognizing he’s not the same player he once was. move him down for a bit, give him an off day, let him DH. anything is better then insisting he keep doing exactly what he is doing. this is the lineup change fallacy. we see Kapler’s lineup change madness and think changing things up is the issue. it isnt. Kapler would change things things up even if they were working. now things must be changed because they are not so. move Hoskins, Cutch and Kingery down. give them an off day. let them DH some. you have Gosselin, Bruce, and now Bohm who can fill these holes, and you did and hopefully soon will have Haseley again for the same purpose.

This team sucks, time to turn to other sports. Time for regime change.
