4:55pm: The Mariners will receive righty Matt Brash in return, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. The 22-year-old Brash went in the fourth round of the 2019 draft and then threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings between rookie ball and Single-A last season.
3:34pm: The Padres have made yet another trade, this time acquiring right-hander Taylor Williams from the Mariners for a player to be named later, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com tweets.
This is the second trade in as many days between the Padres and Mariners, who previously swung a seven-player deal Sunday that saw Austin Nola, Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla go from Seattle to San Diego. As was the case in landing Adams and Altavilla, the idea behind acquiring Williams is to improve a Padres bullpen that has struggled with injuries and underperformance in 2020. It’s anyone’s guess whether the 29-year-old Williams will end up as part of the solution, though, considering he has only put up a 5.34 ERA across 86 major league innings with the Brewers and Mariners. Williams has however, averaged 95 mph on his fastball and posted a 3.80 FIP during his time in the bigs. He also won’t be eligible for arbitration until after 2021, so Williams could be a valuable piece for the Padres over multiple seasons if he turns around his career.
Regardless of whether Williams rights the ship as a Padre, his pickup is yet another sign that they’re going for it in 2020. At 21-15 and trying to break a long playoff drought, the A.J. Preller-led Padres have made a series of notable trades since the weekend.

LETS GO PADRES!
GoLandCrabs
Wow LAcrybabies you got the whole squad laughing with that username.
LongBeachPadre
@GoLandCrabs during the 1984 season I created a shirt called the “Los Angeles Crybabies” and it pictures a crying dodger being consoled by the Friar himself.
ChiSox_Fan
Only 34 min past the deadline!
lowtalker1
If it’s submitted it’s fine
It takes time to get out
Bryzzo2016
Pay ChiSox_Fan no mind, he’s just bitter that his inept front office did NOTHING in a season in which they could have a RARE postseason run.
Magnum
No doubt
lowtalker1
But in reality do the Sox need to do anything? Sure they could use arms but the team is hot right now
Plus Hahn fails to pull the trigger a lot I’ve noticed
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yeah, they could have picked up some useful like Jose Quintana. Oh wait. Chicago already did that
paddyo furnichuh
I agree, he seems to lean more on the side of risk averse.
padsfan1
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Not a bad return for the Mariners on Williams who was a waiver claim.
DarkSide830
good pickup. he’s better then his ERA shows.
lowtalker1
Yeah the padres offense got him a little
BuddyBoy
As a M’s fan, he is far better than his numbers look like. He had a horrible outing that killed his numbers due to sample size but has been excellent the rest of the year.
mikeyst13
Eh, that’s been the story of his career though outside of 1 year in the minors. Always been “better than the numbers.” At some point he just is what he is. A guy who will get you some great outings with too many blow up innings in-between.
BuddyBoy
He’s only given up a run in one of his last nine games and that one was the blowup. He bounced back from that one. Otherwise he’s been good with eleven out of fourteen appearances with zero runs allowed.
bbatardo
Luckily the blowup was against the team he was traded to.
mikeyst13
Ok, and if you go back 1 more appearance he’s given up at least 3 in 2 of his last 10. That’s exactly what I was talking about, he will throw up some scoreless outings for sure, but he’s always been prone to a blow-up more often than you would like.
mlb1225
I got so excited for a second because I thought it was Trevor Williams. What a let down this deadline was.
VTGiant
Damn, will they have anybody left in their farm system?
Simodine
Tons
Padres458
Per kiley mcdaniel at espn, its still second best, but just barely. Patino will graduate soon.
24TheKid
McDaniels reported that before the Clevinger trade. So not sure where they rank now.
Padres458
No he didn’t, tweet is from 5 hours ago, trade was at 8 am
lowtalker1
Patino won’t graduate this year.
CNichols
Patino has been on the roster for weeks and is pitching better of late so I doubt they send him down.
He’s not going to have a full year of service time for control purposes but he’ll have enough time on the MLB squad to graduate off prospect lists. Like he wouldn’t be eligible for ROY next year because of how much time he’ll have had up this year
lowtalker1
50 innings or 45 days. Unless they changed the online for this season
CNichols
Yeah he got called up 8/5 and he’ll probably be rostered through the end of the year which would be like ~55 days
jeffmaz
Most of the guys were either blocked or Rule 5 candidates – or both. Yes, some of those guys probably will be good in the future just not with the Padres.
max57
Right, that’s the key point…depth was too good. They were going to lose some to rule 5, so may as well cash the chips in.
DrDan75
It’s like collecting baseball cards. You buy up all the rookie cards, keep the cards associated with the players who pan out, wait a while for them to mature, then cash ‘em all in for a Randy Johnson rookie card.
Which reminds me… I am the proud owner of an autographed Fernando Tatis Jr. rookie card. That just might be my retirement.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Padres going all in.
padsfan1
jeffmaz
Without really touching their farm system. Historically, very un-Padres-like but the patience with the new ownership and Preller paid off. It took a couple of years more than expected but wow.
xcfan
so now yesterdays trade is a 9 player deal.
DirtbagBlues
Was wondering when the Padres would make a deal.
ayrbhoy
Haha I see what u did there 😉
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Oh God, not another trade with the Mariners.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
It’s like being at a yard sale. You see something cool you buy it you put it in your trunk and then you walk back to the yard to see what else you can get. “How much for that over there?”
hiflew
EXCELLENT analogy. That is just perfect.
ayrbhoy
It’s odd that it wasn’t included in last nights 7 player swap
beersy
Preller & Co. were probably looking at bigger bull pen names, but circled back for Williams when asking prices for others were too high.
Bil522
ROFL this was the best the M’s bullpen has…there is a reason why we suck at ML level
Stevil
This happens occasionally. It’s possible that SD was still exploring other options, or they simply couldn’t agree on a fair return until today.
jeffmaz
They probably discussed him in-depth exploring all the possible trade combos. They both had time to reconsider…
Jack Dempsey
Congratulations to the Padres with Clevinger, now the Braves had the pieces to get Mike, two years of control after this year, he would of made us deep. I don’t want to hear any excuses, the Braves failed!
DarkSide830
to be fair, even with Clev that team still only has 3 reliable SP. you’d also be decimating the farm. perhaps its better waiting until you get some arms back to health next year.
Dorothy_Mantooth
SD kept all of their best prospects except for Trammel and he has been trending downwards for years. Preller actually did quite well for once and cured their Rule 5 issue for next year too. Well done!
DrDan75
What are you talking about? You still have Mike Foltynewicz, right?
sdfriarfan
Williams was like a little kid who wanted to go with his big brother on an outing. He was like “Yippee, I get to go too!!!!
throwinched10
Williams, Pomeranz, Altavilla, Adams (soon), Stammen, Rosenthal, Pagan…not bad!
I am definitely missing some guys too.
Simodine
Patino, johnson, strahm, hill, Guerra, perdomo
Thats 13 when adams is ready. Someone is getting sent down.
lowtalker1
Hill and strahm Johnson
You can forget about the meh perdomo altavilla stammen and Guerra
BuddyBoy
Altavilla is not good. Great stuff, literally no command
ayrbhoy
Danny Altavilla! Man if he figures it out….but we’ve been saying that for 3-4yrs. He will blow by the first 2 batters, make you think he’s in total control then all of a sudden he’ll just miss the zone with 1 pitch then start nibbling at the edges almost like he thinks he’s a crafty soft tosser like Wade DeBlanc or Jamie Moyer.
jamfed
I really liked Cal Quantrill. I’m gonna miss Taco Meat Hedgy too
nlp31
Padres are still a year away
jeffmaz
Yes. A year away from a 2nd Series championship.
ayrbhoy
2024 Mariners Padres World Series
ayrbhoy
Hahaha wait did I really type that? Ms will get to the post season sometime this decade, 2024 sounds about right
DrDan75
They might pull it off with the short season this year. I question their depth in a full 162 games though.
jeffmaz
That means nothing. This year is what it is especially with the expanded playoffs.. In the playoffs, deep means nothing.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
The Dodgers should be scared. The Padres lineup is one of the best two or three in baseball. And their starting rotation is looking pretty good. This is exciting.
Starting lineup by playoff time:
1) Trent Grisham, CF
2) Fernando Tatis Jr., SS
3) Manny Machado, 3B
4) Eric Hosmer, 1B
5) Tommy Pham, LF
6) Mitch Moreland, DH
7) Wil Myers, RF
8) Jake Cronenworth, 2B
9) Austin Nola, C
Starting rotation:
1) Mike Clevinger, RHP
2) Dinelson Lamet, RHP
3) Chris Paddack, RHP
4) Zach Davies, RHP
5) Garrett Richards, RHP
It is the relief pitching that needs to turn their ship around. If that happens, the Pads can beat the Dodgers.
hiflew
Why would the Dodgers be scared? They have arguably a better player at about 10 of those 14 spots. And the spots where the Padres have the edge, the Dodgers still have a really good player.
jeffmaz
Yes, Dodgers have nothing to worry about. They can start cruising and effing off. They have it in the bag, party time! 🙂
lowtalker1
If you compared their ops and output 7/9 padres matched up are better
hiflew
Yeah and if compared a 3 year average (far more telling of skill than a 30 game sample), the Dodgers are better at most positions. You can always find numbers to back up your argument
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
But you also can’t ignore this season. Young teams can suddenly click. That is what we are seeing. And despite the Dodgers having a record month in home runs, the Padres beat the Dodgers in almost every offensive stat and metric. And so does the Padres’ starting pitching. It is the Padres relief pitching, considered their strong suit this past offseason, that is taking the beating.
imindless
So doing your damage against mariners, diamondbacks, rockies and rangers means your a better team? Lmao bellinger and muncy both slumping. Your bullpen is held together with string and you have 1 proven tor starter. Lol not a chance but I like the mindset there really nothing going on in sd other than the weather.
LongBeachPadre
Didn’t the Dodgers just play the mariners, diamondbacks, Rockies, and rangers? What is your point? haha.
DrDan75
The Padres need to swing a trade with the Brewers and get Eric Lauer back in time to play the Dodgers.
jeffmaz
Hamate surgery takes 6 to 8 weeks recovery. 6 weeks puts him in the first few days of Sept. Do they take up a playoff roster spot with him?
CNichols
I’m really curious about Pham because hamate recovery timeline is usually like ~6 weeks and that would put him right at the beginning of October for a return timetable.
The beauty of that roster is the only impending FA is Richards and by next year they can just plug Gore or Patino into that slot so they’re built to compete next year too.
lowtalker1
Moreland and Castro as well but Castro is a meh from the trades
beersy
Moreland has a $3M option for next that I am sure the Padres will pick up if the DH stays in the NL next season.
The Human Rain Delay
Naw, we aint scared, we taking care of our own side of the fence…… building a 5 game lead, getting more rest for our starters/pen than anyone in the league, heading into free agency with our #1 #2 & #3 concern taking care of in MOOKIE
Sounds more like SD is peeking over the fence now that they got their grass green
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
I can smell the fear in you.
The Human Rain Delay
Hey now, take it easy on the cider, I know you haven’t quite been in this ballroom before but they serve it for free and it doesn’t close till 2 A.M .
And is that a folded napkin for your pocket square?
Breath, enjoy the day, nobodies losing sleep tonight up the I5
Padres2019ha
We live in SD, way better breaths over here bruh. I dunnno, sounds like you scared. But I understand why you’re cocky, you guys make it to the playoffs every year and………………that’s about it
imindless
@padres2019ha when was your last ring? Oh wait! Last time you made it to World Series 96’ with hof gwynn? Shoot. Just try to make it to playoffs before you act tough and not in a year where the whole majors make it either lol
LongBeachPadre
@imindless Couple things.
1. When was your last ring?
2. 1998 World Series, not 1996.
3. In a normal year, the Padres would be in sole possession of the wild card.
4. Looking forward to playing LA in the playoffs
imindless
First you gotta make it out of the first round sunshine 🙂 that slump is coming some time soon just gotta hope it happens before the playoffs. We have been slumping and still in first just wait there brother!
Anyone else notice that tipsy, lacry and padres2019ha are the same guy posting how the padres will be relevant because no one else thinks this lol
Dorothy_Mantooth
If Hosmer & Myers keep hitting, that’s a pretty nasty lineup. Not quite Dodgers good but with their SP, they should be able to give the LAD a run for their money especially if playoff Kershaw suddenly shows up!
RyanDubYa
Hey San Diego guys, any guess on that PTBNL? I would guess a low level guy but how low we talkin?
CNichols
Could be literally anyone but SD does have a super deep system meaning they have a bunch of players with potential who aren’t on the 60 man and cannot be named because of that.
Better to have a PTBNL from a better system in my mind I guess
echozulu88
Who is left in their farm system?
CNichols
What do mean who is left? It’s still like a consensus top 5 farm system in baseball even after these trades.
To give you an idea of how deep the Padres were, when FanGraphs did their prospect rankings this year for the Padres it was “Top 53 Prospects” when for most other teams it was Top ~30.
The only top 100 guy that they gave up this week was Trammel. They still have Gore, Patino, Abrams, Campusano who are all highly regarded top 100 prospects. Plus they have a bunch of guys just outside of that like Morejon, Báez, Hassel, Wilcox, Head, Weathers etc… who are all 45 FV.
It’s still a great system after the trades. Not quite as deep anymore but still has some elite prospects.
Basil Ganglia
Yeah – too many guys and not enough spots to put them.
So they may as well trade the prospects for anything they can get, instead of losing them as Rule 5 selections and getting nothing.
Roster triage, in a way. Identify the guys that you want to keep, then start moving everyone else.. And since they are in a contention window, why not put those guys on the table for what you can get as immediate help.
bbatardo
Ironically he was having a decent year until he faced the Padres. I guess they liked what they saw as they reeled off 5 runs on him lol.
Padres458
Someones gotta throw batting practice.
Pads Fans
No team has ever traded 2 starting catchers during the season and gone to the World Series. Nola is one of the worst defensive catchers in baseball. Mejia is one of the few that are worse than Nola. They can hit all they want, but when that team ERA goes up a full point or more the rest of the season it does not bode well for their chances against good teams like the Dodgers.
agentx
Your point about changing catchers is valid, though you were so busy dissing Mejia and Nola that you declined to mention Castro’s glove.
DrDan75
I would have preferred that they traded Mejia rather than Hedges. But the tribe probably didn’t want him back.
@agentx: Castro is just a rental.
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
I switched the catchers when your back was turned! Ha ha, you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is “never get involved in a land war in Asia,” but only slightly less well-known is this: “Never go in against the Padres when DEATH is on the line.”
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Pads Fan — Don’t forget — no team has ever hit grand slams in four consecutive days. And the Padres also scored seven runs with two outs and no one on base in the bottom of their last inning to win a walk-off game. These are a different kind of Padres.
imindless
Playing Texas, mariners and Arizona got it! Where are those teams in the standings?
sportfanatic619
Wrong they got it from Playing Texas and Houston!!
TheBuffaloBillsOfBaseball
Very Brash move by the Mariners I see
daveineg
Have to laugh that acquiring Taylor Williams is seen as “going all in”. I couldn’t wait for the Brewers to get rid of him. Good luck trusting him in big spots. Any time he came in a tight game as a Brewer, he invariably walked the first guy he faced.
echozulu88
Report: SD only have three players, a few coaches and a janitor at the alternate site now
StPeteStingRays
Are the Padres trying to make a statement? Good on you guys!
Dorothy_Mantooth
The Padres had a major 40 man roster crunch facing them in December so moves needed to be made or they would have had at least 5, if not more desirable prospects exposed to the Rule 5 draft. Preller’s hand was forced to some respects but he seemed to do a pretty good job acquiring the right amount of controllable assets vs. rentals while really only giving away two decent prospects in Quantrill and Trammel. The fact that Trammel has been traded twice as a Top 100 prospect makes me wonder just how good he truly is. I guess we’ll find out soon enough if he’s going to Seattle. They’ll have to find playing time for him out there. If not, he’s merely a utility player.
hoosierhysteria
Stammen must go to pasture. He is getting crushed. These new relievers better be better.
