The latest minor moves from around the baseball world…
- The Tigers outrighted infielder Dawel Lugo to their alternate training site, the team announced. Lugo cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. Lugo saw semi-regular action for Detroit in 2019 but hasn’t hit much over 400 total Major League plate appearances, batting .236/.270/.358 and seven home runs. Acquired from the Diamondbacks as part of the J.D. Martinez trade in 2017, Lugo has a .280/.310/.399 slash line over 3340 career PA in the minors, though he did post an .859 OPS over 303 Triple-A plate appearances in 2019.

One of the worst trades in the past 10 years

I agree. Lugo has been terrible and the other two acquired in the trade have done very little in the minors.

Yeah, they got so little they would have been better of keeping him and taking the compensatory pick.
Ji-Man Choi
Or just trading him elsewhere

The compensory pick for JD Martinez would have been a fourth rounder. The actual return has not panned out, but it was still more valuable back then than that pick.

If they would held on to JD they certainly would have won more games thus losing out on Casey Mize in 2018 draft.

The JV trade was terrible too. How Avila still has a job is beyond me. He’s never won a trade, drafted the clear cut #1 picks which were no brainers and the Tigers still have Fulmer and Boyd. Gross.
Every time I see Javier Biaz play I cringe knowing Tigers could of had him for Fulmer.
“But tigers had to do something” blah blah blah spare me, GMs all over baseball makes good moves with trades. Trade should have been JV for Yordan Alvarez straight up none of this 3 crap players back. A good GM would have spun that trade.
DarkSide830
hindsight is 20/20. you don’t know if Houston would have even offered Alvarez.

Not sure why this has to be repeated almost daily, but there was hardly any market for both JV and JD then. You can always go back and look.

It’s easy to say now that the tigers should’ve traded fulmer for Baez. But I guarantee you would not have wanted them to make that trade at the time. Fulmer coming off a ROY season and Baez being this young infielder who swung at everything. I really don’t understand why so many people get upset with Avila about the baez/Bergman trade possibility.
detroitfan23
Wasn’t Yordan still with the Dodgers when the JV and Houston trade happened
Hard to walk with four balls
You were NEVER going to get Javier Biaz for Fulmer.
Just stop with that nonsense.
The only team that missed out on the JV trade was the Dodger’s who would have won a WS if they gave up an OF prospect to Detroit. Detroit’s objective in that trade was to remove salary. Which they did.
gotigers68
Still should’ve gotten more out of the trades, look at the White Sox, now.

Chris Sale was under a better contract and younger. Not even remotely the same.

He’d probably be the ace of the LAA staff.
