Braves starter Mike Soroka had to be helped off of the field after suffering an evident injury. He was attempting to cover first base when he came up limping and ultimately could not bear weight on his right leg.
While it’s obviously far too soon to know what kind of prognosis Soroka will face, replays suggest he may well have suffered damage to his Achilles tendon. That could be a potentially devastating injury to the hurler, who turns 23 tomorrow.
Soroka was excellent last year, his first full campaign in the majors, as he earned an All-Star nod and came in second in the A.L. Rookie of the Year voting. He finished the season with 174 2/3 innings of 2.68 ERA pitching.
It had been more of the same early in 2020, as he carried a 1.59 ERA through his first two outings. While Soroka is anything but overpowering, he has succeeded to this point in his young career by keeping batters off balance and limiting the long ball.
Soroka is on track for likely arbitration qualification as a Super Two player after the 2020 season. His earning power would be reduced greatly if he’s unable to participate fully in the truncated season.
Any significant absence would obviously also pose a major problem for the Braves. They’re already missing Cole Hamels and Felix Hernandez from the anticipated rotation mix.

Looks like an ACL.
WAH1447
Your an idiot if you think is an acl he literally went to both his knees after he got hurt it’s obvious a foot or ankle injury
slowcurve
^ you’re
braveshomer
let me ask ya something @Wah1447…why do you (and a lot of others for that matter) so quick to call someone an idiot, dumb, etc….You make yourself seem just as dumb as the people you’re calling dumb smh….oh and btw, a torn ACL affects everyone quiet different differently. Seen many players instantlt buckle under the pain; Seen Keanu Neal simply simply feel a burning sensation in his knee; seen Philip Rivers play a whole playoff game on a torn ACL….just sayin, might wanna look in the mirror a quick sec before calling people idiots there bud! lol
breckdog
I think it might be achilles as reported, I was watching live and noted his weight went forward over the top of his right foot, but the foot seemed to stay in place and his leg went farther forward than normal with the weight at that awkward position possibly causing the injury. At least thats what it looked like to me, achilles often happens in combination with ankle injuries. I am really hoping its a combo sprain and strained achilles, but it looks bad to me.
windycitykid89
Holy overreaction, keyboard warrior.
windycitykid89
Previous comment was for WAH.
bravesfan
No… lower foot. Achilles or calf. That knee didn’t remotely look hurt :/
oldmansteve
Looked like a torn achilles or a torn calf muscle. Hope it’s the latter as that is closer to a 4-6 week recovery. An Achilles rupture could be 12-18 months.
padam
Yeah, my bad. Meant Achilles but was just talking to someone about their ACL rehab and types that in by mistake. Sucks for the poor kid.
drtymike0509
looked like an Achilles to me live. and couldn’t put any weight on it at all being helped off. usually an acl has a limp of the field vibe. this wasn’t it…
bravesfan
This is a big loss for the Braves! Huge! The rotation is already in really bad shape
ATL Baseball Fan
The starting rotation is the weakest part of the team and this will really put pressure on the rest of the starters. I am wondering if they will bring up Ian Anderson to make a few starts or try to go with a more veteran presence. It might be too early in the season for the GM to look for a big impact trade partner. Too many teams are still in it, especially with 16 teams making the playoffs.
braveshomer
This is why the Braves can’t have nice things!…we always break something smh
slowcurve
Verlander – Out
Kluber – Out
Ohtani – Out
Synderguard – Out
We’re not alone.
bravesfan
Slow curve, difference is, those teams have more establish pitchers behind them vs Braves who really only have Fried now.
slowcurve
Please don’t remind me!
leftyleftylefty
SynderGUARD lol.
You sure it’s not Sinderguard?
slowcurve
Didn’t feel like looking it up and can’t edit on the app. It’s close enough. I’d wager 8/10 people who aren’t Mets diehards would spell it the same way. I don’t wake up everyday and rub one out to his picture like you southpaw so I wasn’t 100% sure how to spell it.
leftyleftylefty
What a stupid comment.
Jesus.
ATL Baseball Fan
I was watching the game and my first thought was ruptured achilles tendon. I hope I am wrong. Even if it ends up being a torn calf muscle, it might take him out for the year if it requires surgery.
louwhitakerisahofer
I’m not 23 anymore nor the athlete I once was, but I blew my Achilles out and had surgery in February. I feel for Soroka if that’s what it is. Rehab is a nightmare for it and the pain still comes and goes.
breckdog
Blew mine out playing basketball. Hopefully the medical procedures are better now, cost me 18 months. I dunked a basketball, got fouled by a guy cuttting under me and i came down on his foot which caused my weight as i landed to tear my achilles.
SaltLakeBrave
Oh Shit!
DarkSide830
the division winner might be below .500 this year
SalaryCapMyth
It’s kind of getting like that, isn’t it.
inkstainedscribe
At this point, you hope he’ll be well by Spring Training.
slowcurve
Okay, we can cancel the season now.
oldmansteve
Would you want his injury to have been in vain?
slowcurve
Absolutely not, but he’s the ace on a 2 man staff right now. Not looking good unless we can catch lightening in a bottle with young guy or trade. Maybe Folty miraculously comes back to life.
ScottCFA
Why, slowboy, is a torn Achilles contagious?
slowcurve
Slowboy? Do I really have to explain why, as a Braves fan who just lost their ace, I’d be fine with the season being cancelled. It’s more of sarcasm than anything. Obviously I want them to continue, win or lose. Some of you guys need to have things really thoroughly explained I guess.
The Human Toilet
Was this COVID related somehow? It looked like a case of bad luck.
Hopefully he makes a full recovery from whatever it is
slowcurve
I’m saying I’d be fine with the season being cancelled now since the Braves’ chances to win are significantly lower now. It’s sad that I had to spell this out.
braveshomer
I got what you meant slowcurve lol…sarcasm tends to fall on deaf ears around these parts hahaha
slowcurve
Thank God! Some of these folks are slower than Kershaw’s curve.
mt in baltimore
Time to call Mike Elias w the Orioles. Wade LeBlanc would be an excellent replacement.
DTD_ATL
Wade LeBlanc and excellent don’t belong in the same sentence.
DarkSide830
what about Tommy Milone?
The Human Toilet
Lmao!! Wade LeBlanc.
ATL Baseball Fan
I doubt they will trade anyone at this point, they are 5-3 and in second place.. I know it is the Orioles and they are playing over their head in that division, but stranger things have happened. They could make the playoffs at this point.
Ironman_4life
I like your thinking
SalaryCapMyth
This..is worse than losing Freddie Freeman or Acuna. Losing any starter at this point is very difficult, let alone Soroka.
DTD_ATL
Forget this yr, this could be a career ruiner.
DarkSide830
well at this point that ship has sailed
philthepat
That is 100% a ruptured achillies… awful
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
So the Braves lose their only great pitcher in the rotation?
bhambrave
No. They have another one.
DarkSide830
this team isnt cooked, its deep Fried
oldmansteve
Wouldn’t say Fried is great. He is good, but great might be a stretch.
bhambrave
The last two years he’s been very good. So far this year he’s been better.
DTD_ATL
Fried is the better pitcher, has much better stuff overall.
Briffle2
Better stuff doesn’t always equate to being a better pitcher.
neurogame
This abbreviated season is a constellation of F-ups. Several teams postponing games because of the viral outbreak. Buster, Price, Cespedes and Cain opting out. Joe kelly getting suspended more games than any cheating Astro. Seven inning double headers. Two-run lead off home runs. Ohtani can’t find the strike zone. Soroka’s devastating injury.
Come on Braves! Let Puig pitch in relief for one inning. And Mets, let Tebow roam outfield for this shortened season. Or at least let him DH for the entertainment value.
bobtillman
Puig replaces Cespedes. They’ve already got the shrink on retainer for Yo…..Might as well get your money ‘s worth.
bhambrave
I wouldn’t be surprised if they talked to the Mariners about Gonzalez or Walker.
WiffleBall
Who thought a week and a half of “summer camp” was a good idea to get these guys into game shape?
Briffle2
Lol, so the rest of his body is in shape to pitch, except for his Achilles tendon, it just needed a couple more weeks of training and it wouldn’t have snapped?
oldmansteve
No amount of training would have prevented a fluke injury. Wiffle just hates baseball and wants it to be cancelled.
bobtillman
I’m no medical guy but by happenstance was watching the game when he came off the mound. It was certifiably ugly. Again, I have no clue, but I doubt you see him again this year, and likely into next.
Mjm117
Did not look good at all. He knew immediately something was wrong. Tried to put weight on it and just couldn’t.
Hopefully it’s not serious.
racosun
You know he’s bad-ass when he can pitch for Atlanta and still place high in the running for American League R.O.Y.
bhambrave
I saw that too.
Briffle2
I hope the Braves turn to Anderson. A long time ago Soroka was a young buck top prospect just needing a chance.
oldmansteve
Anderson may be the best of all their pitching prospects including Soroka.
Briffle2
I hope they go to him. I’m tired of seeing retreads filling in spot starts. They need to start seeing who will be there in the long term.
breckdog
When anderson was drafted he was praised for his ability to pitch to both sides of the plate. That seems to be an issue with some of the braves pitchers. If anderson is called up and able to do that maybe the others will take note.
Briffle2
Right now I’d settle for not seeing 2-0 or 2-1 on every batter by a starter. Baby steps.
Mjm117
Not sure if Ian is ready. He got destroyed when promoted to AAA but at 21 yrs was still avg’ing 10k per 9In in his almost 30 IP. Though command issues has always been his biggest issue avg’ing 4 per 9IP
Braves might not have a choice now. A lot of pressure for a 21 year old
oldmansteve
I’d agree with you if this were a normal situation, you would want Anderson to show some mastery of AAA before getting the call up. But since there is no opportunity to pitch in the minors this season, plus AAA being a graveyard for pitching prospects right now, and the braves being desperate, it might be the perfect storm to move him straight to the show. The royals did that with Singer and Bubic. Although the Royals aren’t contending, but still. It is either Anderson or Bryce Wilson and I know who I would rather see.
Panda8
Definitely looked to be an Achilles. He grabbed for his foot as he was falling. Reminded me of when this happened to Ryan Howard. I hope I’m wrong though.
jdolan74
Welcome back, Folty?
jdolan74
I feel like Ian Anderson was already about to be tabbed to replace Newcomb.
dave frost nhlpa
I feel I just got smarter as I read more comments.
bobtillman
Anderson spends too much time living in the past.
bhambrave
Aqualung.
toastyroasty
I bet he’s never heard That before! Wait til I tell all the guys! You are So Funny!
And Original.
Fred McGriff
Time to call up Bartolo Colon.
roddo311
Wait, did the article say he was second in the A.L. Rookie of the year? This whole time I thought the Braves were N.L. What a crazy world we live in!
toastyroasty
Good luck Michael
jekporkins
According to my fantasy alert he’s out for the year.
