TODAY: According to a press release from the team, all Mets players and personnel who returned to New York from Miami have registered negatives on tests taken both Thursday and Friday. “Test results of close contacts for those that remained in Miami also came back negative,” the statement said.
AUGUST 20, 6:52pm: A Mets position player and a coach tested positive, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
5:08pm: Most Mets will fly out of Miami tonight, Andy Martino of SNY first reported. Only the two members of the organization who tested positive and those who aren’t delayed by contact tracing will stay behind. The belief is that the Mets did not violate protocols on the road, per Martino.
4:07pm: A Mets player and a staff member have tested positive for the coronavirus, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network and Tim Healey of Newsday. As a result, their road game against the Marlins tonight has been postponed, as has their matchup against the Yankees on Friday.
This is the latest COVID-related setback in a season chock-full of them for Major League Baseball, which has seen numerous games postponed as a result of the illness. The Marlins and Cardinals have been hit especially hard so far, and the league has tightened up its protocols of late in an effort to prevent outbreaks and make sure each team completes its 60-game regular-season schedule.
For now, it’s unknown how Thursday’s development will affect these three teams’ schedules. Thursday was supposed to be the last Mets-Marlins game in Miami this year, but they’ll have to make it up at a later date. The Mets are slated to host the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday, so there could be a doubleheader on one of those days. However, the Mets will have to receive clearance to return to the field first.

MLB should just cut it down to 54 games and get to playoffs which should be in bubble cities. 54 amount is a third of 162. Just get on with it
Cmurphy
If MLB had their way, they’d have 10 games and the playoffs. They resisted the more games demands from the union because they supposedly lose money.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“supposedly”?
In the nicest way possible; do you understand how businesses work, sir?
PipptyPoppitygivemetheZoppity
I mean this in the least disrespectful way possible, comments like yours are condescending and unnecessary.
Cmurphy
There is a lot of debate on how much MLB is losing, I hedged my comment to avoid that debate. The point is that MLB would rather play less games but they have the union that has to agree to it. Less games for players means less money for them. Each team is responsible for their players/staff. Why should players on teams that have had no cases have to earn less money for less games?
rct
‘in the nicest way possible’
*proceeds to be a condescending jerk*
Ducky Buckin Fent
Lol
Why?
Because I believe businesses don’t exist to lose money?
For real. I could care less about what someone “says” to me on the internet. (This includes you)
Why would I, man?
As a vet, I’m no longer thanked for my service. Rather I’m now told I’m a fascist (so…why was I fighting ethnic cleansing?)
As a builder who improves literally hundreds of homes a year I’m now told I value “profits over lives”.
Being educated leads to accusations of being somehow “indoctrinated”. Into whom or what I’ve no idea. No one has explained that yet.
I completely blow all that kinda nonsense off, bro.
😉
johnnydubz
@CMurphy the players rejected working in a bubble environment and preferred to spread the virus around. Blake Snell called the fans worthless which was backed by MLBPA hence him still apart of it. Let’s not forget how Astros and MLBPA told the fans it’s a fake sport and Manfred confirmed it by saying it’s a shiny trophy
Jeff Zanghi
Not only was your comment just completely uncalled for… I do understand business — quite well, I have several degrees in it, and playing fewer games meaning losing more $ isn’t exactly a straightforward like “do you understand business” type situation. The obvious logic would actually be that the more games played… the move revenue and this more money a team would make. So I think the skepticism of whether or not owners really would have lost more money playing more games is warranted. Now I do understand that the owners standpoint was that they’re actually losing $ on every game played without fans in attendance… so there claims may well be true… but it’s certainly not an “obvious” thing that required your snarky comment…
findingnimmo
It is couldn’t care less. Not could care less ducky. If you could care less than why bother making the statement. Couldn’t!
Cmurphy
@johnnydubz, no one wanted to work in a bubble environment for 4 months, I don’t blame them. Trout would have missed the birth of his child, Bryant just had a kid, same with Harper. I take a lot of Snell’s comments with a grain of salt. He went off about no amount of money was worth the risk and yet he’s playing. I don’t recall hearing that about the Astros but it was probably overshadowed by the cheating scandal. But they did agree on protocols, several players have broken protocols, putting their teammates’ health and employment at risk. If they wanted to go to bar or hang out somewhere, they could have opted out. Both sides are being greedy IMO, further cementing that many don’t care about the fans who basically pay their revenue/salaries.

that’s funny. that’s not at all what happened. let me remind you.

Ducky – In all seriousness, I want to thank you for your service.
I also believe pretty much all big companies in the United States (not so much United anymore though) of America value profit over lives. I am 56 now with degrees from a major university in Psychology and Sociology. I have realized as I age and understand more about my fellow Americans that the only thing I put value in is my family and close friends. I do love baseball and I am glad they are playing. I am also a Cardinal fan and I didn’t mind waiting 30 days for their next game after some of the players tested positive. I value human life. Ore than baseball

Football should actually be easier because they only play once a week. The biggest issue with the MLB is that teams have to play every single day, so anytime there is a positive there is a day or two of complete shutdowns. As long as they are testing on Fridays for NCAA and Saturdays for NFL, they should be able to handle this a lot better.
Orel Saxhiser
Contact practices all week. College football should absolutely not be played during a pandemic. Students first and foremost, then athletes. As a nation, we need to stop sending mixed messages. This is why we are now the world’s #1 hotspot. The public school where I work will be restricted to online classes for at least the first marking period. If it was in-person classes, I would have sat it out.

Just heard on the radio it was one Met player and one support staff that tested positive.
I’m not blaming anyone because I have no idea how any of these guys caught it (I don’t think it’s been definitely confirmed how the other outbreaks happened either), but I wonder if the people in the clubhouses and around the players are held to the same health standards as the players and are complying with them.
It just seems like a good amount of non-players have tested positive after games have started. I know they’re in the clubhouse and around the players, but they aren’t around the players as much as the players are around each other and I imagine there’s more players then there are support staff and clubhouse employees.

I don’t know how it all works but at some point somebody has to interact with a person not subjected to the rules to get necessities like food.

Being an apologist!
Orel Saxhiser
I watch the Mets most nights (my JV game prior to the varsity Dodgers). Diaz has been excellent. Some people apparently think relievers should NEVER give up a hit or run. That is not possible. Since relievers constantly come in during pressure situations, their blips are more magnified than other players. If a starter gives up a home run in his first inning, it’s no big deal because he can atone for it over the next few innings. If a reliever does the same, it may cost the team the ballgame.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Four balls out of five pitches to the first batter to walk a run in. Forsythe didnt even have to work him for the walk. CHOKE.Great stuff, no doubt. But no intestinal fortitude!
Orel Saxhiser
No respect for someone who falls back on “choke” as a word to describe professional athletes. If you’re going to question an athlete’s intestinal fortitude, make sure you can do it better.
Orel Saxhiser
Good baseball fans know how to spell the game’s best pitcher’s last name. Then there’s that troubling double negative…
SalaryCapMyth
Yep. Diaz might be figuring things out. One earned run in the last 7.1 innings with 18 K’s, dear God. K’s were never his problem but that’s still pretty eye popping.

Poor Marlins. More of their games postponed and it wasn’t even their fault this time.
MetsFan22
Technically they play in a hotspot so it is lol.
nymetsking
The Marlins supposedly got it in Atlanta & the Mets haven’t been there long enough to have caught it there.
MarlinsFanBase
Actually, not any team’s fault. I think it’s a traveling issue. MLB can take all the cautions they can, but they don’t have control over planes, hotels, and other travel accommodations.
As a Marlins fan I know how it sucks for you Mets fans if you start getting more positives.
I wonder a couple of things:
1) If the Mets have multiple players down like the Marlins did, doesn’t that count as affecting the NL East because two teams got hit?
2) If the Marlins got hit as a result again, what happens? We are already down to our C Team. Are they forced to bring up all of their prospects, which they were avoiding?
This thing is a mess… especially if the Mets sustain a lot of positives like the Marlins did. Two teams in one division!?!

Stop cancelling games over minimal confirmed covid cases. That’s why you have a 60 man roster. If this is the way the season is going to go just cancel it all and start next year
Perksy
Exactly, and didn’t Soto test positive on opening day? Didn’t stop the nationals from playing.
5TUNT1N
I agree with you to an extent, I believe the reason the games are postponed is to ensure the players who will be playing also don’t test positive if they are in a clubhouse together you have to make sure they all don’t have it before you field a team against a competitor and risk infecting them also.
nymetsking
They let the Marlins continue. Didn’t go so well.
MarlinsFanBase
Exactly. This is a mess.

Stop suggesting protocols that have nothing to do with the way the virus works.
It’s a highly contagious virus that takes up to 2 weeks for incubation, but is still infectious during that time. The player who tested positive could have have spreading it to the entire team for several days, which is what happened to the Cardinals. Initially, 2 players tested positive, then other positive tests appeared over the next few days. They quarantined, got 4 days of negative tests in a row,and got the all clear, only to have several more positives because the virus hadn’t fully incubated during those four days for one or two players, and they had several more infections because it was spread around on the flight home.
That’s why MLB changed their protocols after the Cardinals’ outbreak. Not because some players supposedly went to a casino (nope), but because the protocols they had didn’t prevent the spread of the virus amongst teammnates.
We’ll have to see if the new prevention protocols and players’ dedication to them actually succeed in preventing team outbreaks like with the Marlins and Cards. The Reds had an infected player, but they appeared to nip it in the bud. Coulda been the protocols, coulda been luck, could be that the virus simply hasn’t shown up yet in other tested players yet. But if MLB can limit the postponed games to only two or three, prevent any other Marlin/Cardinal-sized outbreaks,, and keep the number of infected players on teams to one or two a week, it might be manageable enough to handle with the truncated double-header games, which were designed to make up games lost to COVID without overly taxing teams.
But that’s a whole lot if. And there’ll be a breaking point when there simply will not be enough days left in the schedule to reschedule and that players will enter an unsustainable risk for injury (especially pitchers, which are already getting hurt a lot more). MLB also will have decide if unbalanced completed schedules for teams, while determining playoff teams by winning percentages, is a controversy they want to swallow.
kje76
That whole “just replace them with the 60 man roster” thing was ALWAYS a fallacy.
First, if someone in the clubhouse has been exposed, then they’ve ALL been theoretically exposed. The team/league has to take appropriate steps to isolate the team and not expose them to others.
Second, there are only at most 12 players at the alternate camp who are on the 40 man roster. If everyone is called up, then at some point at the end of things a valuable piece in the minors is going to be exposed to right the 40 man roster. What they should do is waive the 40 man roster requirements for teams involved in suspected cases. MLB didn’t do that.
bhambrave
With no fans in the stands, home games don’t quite have the same advantage that they used to. I wonder if they could play a Marlins “home game” in NY and let the Marlins bat last.

Last week of the season, three teams have positive tests, are they going to cancel those games for six teams? Cram 6 games into 2 days? Delay the playoffs?
What’s the plan here, Rob?
wedgeant27
Already in the works to have the playoffs in a bubble, as previously reported on mlbtr and elsewhere
nymetsking
He clearly said the last week of the season.
smuzqwpdmx
Making the playoffs a bubble in warm weather cities is what will allow delaying the playoffs to play makeup games. They’ll still have to fight the TV networks over money for uncertain postseason scheduling though, I suppose.
nymetsking
MLB’s not worried about the weather. They didn’t want to extend past the normal time frame because they fear a second wave of outbreak would shut the postseason down.
Orel Saxhiser
Delaying the playoffs a week to 10 days would be a good move. As it is, uninfected teams have had very few days off. Take some time to squeeze in necessary makeup games and give these guys some rest. It’s not as if fans will be demanding ticket refunds.
The Human Rain Delay
So the Dodgers sit idle for 12?days ?
To then go into a 3 game winner takes all?
No way Jose
Orel Saxhiser
I’m a Dodgers fan and would have no problem with it. What I would like to ultimately see is dumping the all-star game and giving all players a week’s rest that coincides with the trade deadline.
smuzqwpdmx
The CPBL has a couple weeks for rainout makeup games after each 60 game half-season. Works fine.
The playoffs are a complete roll of the dice anyway, there’s no sense in pretending it’s supposed to be fair. It’s supposed to be entertainment.
5TUNT1N
All star game was cancelled before the season started FYI.
jim stem
Pretty sure teams will be very ‘hush hush’ in the final 10 days. And those that are headed to the playoffs aren’t going to be very motivated to test and/or announce starting pitchers and middle of the lineup guys results if they feel fine once the post season starts.
kje76
I suspect if that were even hinted at that HOLY HECK would break out. Potentially endangering not just other players but the public at large? They would BLEED sponsors. They’d be a pariah team/sport. There would be criminal investigations.
