The Mets have acquired catcher Robinson Chirinos and infielder Todd Frazier in a pair of trades with the Rangers, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (Twitter links). Texas will receive a player to be named later in return for Chirinos, as per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (Twitter link). The Rangers have officially announced the deals, revealing that they will also get a player to be named later for Frazier, and some money will be sent to New York to complete the Chirinos deal — Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported that those cash considerations will total $360K.
Chirinos has been bothered by an ankle injury for much of the season, and eventually had a 10-day stint on the injured list to fully recover before returning to action last week. It’s safe to assume that Chirinos’ dreadful .119/.224/.143 slash line over 49 PA is at least partially the result of that ankle problem, as the 36-year-old backstop has been a much more potent hitter over the last six seasons with the Rangers and Astros. Chirinos hit .235/.331/.445 with 84 homers over 1953 plate appearances from 2014-19.
Anything close to that type of production would be a nice boon for the Mets, who have received little from Wilson Ramos at the plate this year. With Tomas Nido on the IL, the Mets were thin on options behind the plate, and now could use both Chirinos and Ramos in something of a timeshare in September.
Chirinos could also be on the Mets’ radar for 2021, as the catcher has a $6.5MM club option on his services for next season ($1MM buyout). It’s a fair price based on his past track record, though Chirinos will need to get on track at the plate or else the Mets might decline to exercise that option and seek a less-expensive catcher on the open market. (Or, speculatively, maybe a much more expensive catcher if a change in ownership means the Mets have more dollars to spend on big-ticket talent like J.T. Realmuto.)
After playing for the Mets in 2018-19, Frazier makes his return to Queens after hitting .241/.322/.380 over 121 PA with Texas this season. Frazier ended up playing almost every day with the Rangers, mostly at first base due to Danny Santana’s injury problems and Ronald Guzman spending much of the season at the team’s alternate training site. Frazier also saw some time at third base, and he’ll provide the Mets with some depth and a right-handed bench bat at both corner infield positions. Of note, J.D. Davis has been hampered over the last couple of games with a minor hip problem, so Frazier’s addition could be a particular depth add for third base if Davis has to miss any significant time.

This must be why the Lynn deal fell apart. Rangers GM was on the phone with the Mets instead.

Brodie shows off his genius again!!! Look case cracker it’s me in the shower!!!!
angt222
Why? The Mets aren’t going anywhere but home after the season is over. BVW Probably gave up a pitcher that’s going to throw a shutout against the Mets in a year.
bestno5
I wonder if Fred Wilpon will be caught on a hot mic saying, “Brodie has no clue what he is doing . He has no clue!!”

He’s got no BUSINESS BEING OUT THERE! NO BUSINESS!!

They’ll still misspell Brodieeeeyy’s name wrong like they did in the last press release.

I was hoping for a reunion with Chirinos. The Rays sure could’ve used him down the stretch

Hey at least the 3rd best team in NY, did something today besides lose to the Marlins.
mlbnyyfan
Why bring back Frazier where is he going to play.
johnnydubz
@Yanks4Life only two teams in NY genius
bigstein09
Not true this year genius.
jmag1976
maybe he was referring to the L. I. Ducks, who didn’t play this year… and because of that, are still better than these Mutts lol. and I’m a meta fan. These trades are a disgrace.
CoachBlake
The Jays are playing in Buffalo this year. Isn’t that NY?
osjimmy
Blue Jays are in Buffalo
nymetsking
Shh, Johnny thinks he aced geography class.
johnnydubz
Jets and Giants play in NJ @bigstein09 So explain why they have been called NY for last 30+ years genius? The NY Islanders and Buffalo Bills are better so if he was inferring Toronto Blue Jays that means he thought they are better than the Yankees…..
hiflew
He wasn’t inferring, he was implying. You infer, someone else implies.

When is Cohen buying the Mets, maybe he’ll shake things up, hopefully
Tom E. Snyder
Chirinos should have stayed with Houston. THEY would have never traded him.

majority of the moves BVW has made i can get (some you would have to twinge your eyes and really strain with the rose colored glasses but you could see a reason), but this i cant even come up with a reason behind this.
chirinos is older and is even less than a bat than the taxi squad players and right now you have a logjam all around the infield where you cant even play one of your best defenders yet you acquire someone that plays 1st base (where your 2 best hitters play and 3base which is a log jam between gimenez, mcneil (when cano doesnt dh), jd davis, and guillorme. Why BVW … were they on the clearance bin and you said why not?
dugmet
because fans cannot see a reason does not mean a solid reason does not exist.
Roll
I hope so and i even found a reason when they signed lowrie when he would have been their number 2 super utility guy. Other than the Wilpons getting money (announced later) for Chirinos, it really makes no sense to get a guy with an OPS+ of 5 … not 100 not 50 but 5 that is below average at throwing out base runners just boggles my mind.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
Welp we are going to the playoffs now lol. Bvw please share what you are drinking as with this crazy season we all could use some.
Guyerbassist
I hope people vote with their wallet and don’t show up next year. Screw this team. A bunch of cheap asses and a gm who is incompetent. You get a brand new pretty stadium and a loser team to play in it. I’m just done with this team until they get owners who will spend and a gm that is decent.
dugmet
its posts like this that quickly remind me why discussing baseball with fans is like discussing women with 5th graders.
Guyerbassist
You have to admit jd isn’t good. He held on to profar too long, minor too long, and potentially Gallo too long as well. He also promised and promised that we were saving up for last off season and we were going to spend and get good players for the new stadium.
What’s the point of getting a new stadium if you are gonna run out essentially a minor league team? At least we have Lynn to look forward to next year and hopefully they bring kluber back to look forward to as well.
Otherwise tell me what to look forward to next year? What good player or prospect can we look forward to? Josh jung? Please tell me why I shouldn’t jump the ship, and tell me they are going to be a decent team next year, or even the year after. If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it but I don’t think I will be.
Having split my time in life between Texas and Cleveland, I wonder who wins a round in thr playoffs first the Rangers or the browns?
agentx
Dugmet, think of Guyerbassist’s comment as perfectly executed satire about the same fans you referenced.

Mets never fail to Met. What even is this trade? 2 old guys that aren’t gonna improve anything and there’s nowhere to even put one of them. At this point I just feel bad for DeGrom. I’m only half joking when I say they should’ve just signed Bartolo instead. At least the fans would have something to be happy about.
wildboys
They can still sign Big Sexy and R.A. Dickey. If we’re not going to win, we can at least have some fun.
hiflew
It’s easy to criticize the Mets, but 2nd place in the NL East and the guaranteed playoff spot that goes with it is WIDE OPEN right now. Any of the 4 teams behind the Braves could take that spot. It’s nice to see the Mets try for it when it would have been easy to just say forget it since Thor and Stroman are at home.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
I wouldn’t call what the Mets have done this season “trying” (not in a positive sense, at least)
They’re horrible defensively, turn into bad Little Leaguers with runners in scoring position, and had to nerf their bullpen in order to field an adequate rotation, If not for DeGrom and Lugo, they’d probably be in Pirates territory.
davidk1979
Both guy have been negative war players this year
hiflew
All that means is that it would have been bad to trade for them a month ago. WAR only tells about past production, it is absolutely meaningless when it comes to future production.
Roll
I agree with you but what predicts an older player later in the season will be better than they were at the beginning of the season when they were “fresh”
hiflew
Dumb luck. But there are some guys that just take longer to get started. Dan Uggla was always one of those players you wanted to trade away before the All Star break, but after it he was nigh unstoppable. Some players are sprinters and some are marathon runners.
phenomenalajs
Mets may have just set a record for players with the first name Robinson on the active roster at the same time. Toddfather is probably more valuable for the energy and familiarity he brings to the team than his current ability on the field.

If the Mets gave up comparable age players on their 40-man roster at the same position groups but making less than Frazier and Chirinos, the Rangers would be getting Eduardo Nuñez and René Rivera.
phenomenalajs
Based on the latest tweets and since the Mets are getting cash from the Rangers, the players going to the Rangers have to be at least in the 60-man player pool if not already on the 40-man or active roster. For the catcher, I’m guessing it’s either Ali Sanchez or Patrick Mazeika or, possibly, David Rodriguez. I doubt it’s Nido or Rivera. I believe Brodie said they didn’t give higher end prospects, so Baty, Allan, Mauricio, and Alvarez are probably staying put. I don’t think BVW wanted to give up Mark Vientos, but it could be Luis Carpio.
phenomenalajs
Luis Carpio is a good possibility because he’s set to become an organizational free agent after the season, but he’s only 23 and the Mets have a bunch of infielders ahead of him for the foreseeable future in Rosario, Gimenez, and Mauricio.
mookiesboy
that’s a fair get and an easy give
phenomenalajs
Oh, I didn’t quite understand how these trades worked until I saw Anthony diComo’s article. The reason the Mets traded the ever famous “PTBNL” is because that was the only way a player who was not in the 60-man pool could be traded. I would think the players would technically need to be added to the Mets’ 60-man pool before the trade is finalized, so the space would need to be open.
Dutch Vander Linde
Is Billy Hamilton giving up his number?
phenomenalajs
Good question. Lagares is no longer with the organization after he elected free agency, but he wound up wearing #87 while he was briefly up because Eduardo Nuñez had his number. I think Frazier’s presence has greater meaning to the rest of the club than Lagares’ did, so it’s possible Billy Hamilton will switch.
Dutch Vander Linde
Or maybe he gets DFA to make room for Frazier on the roster.
phenomenalajs
I doubt Billy Hamilton gets DFA’d since they already let Lagares go.
phenomenalajs
Well, the answer is Frazier is now wearing #33.
hiflew
They are former teammates with the Reds and probably know each other well. I’d imagine they could work it out.

An absurd series of “look busy” moves by one of the worst GMs in the game.
Kevin Smith is easily the best player in the deal, and of course he’s leaving the Mets.
As for Castro, even with the luck he’s having in 15 IP this year he’s giving up almost 2 HR per 9.
What a fiasco.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
The problem with the Mets is that they need pitching and they overvalue players that only have a single year of success.
