The Marlins announced today that they’ve placed 13 players on the injured list. Those going on the IL include right-handers Sandy Alcantara, Jeff Brigham, Robert Dugger, Yimi Garcia, Jordan Holloway, Nick Neidert and Ryne Stanek; left-handers Adam Conley, Caleb Smith and Alex Vesia; infielders Sean Rodriguez and Miguel Rojas; and catcher Chad Wallach.
Miami also made official a previously reported slate of roster moves. Lefty Richard Bleier was acquired from the Orioles in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Right-hander James Hoyt was acquired from the Indians for cash. The club also claimed relievers Justin Shafer and Josh D. Smith from the Reds, claimed reliever Mike Morin from the Brewers and claimed reliever (and former Marlin) Brian Moran from the Blue Jays. Veteran infielder Logan Forsythe signed a one-year, Major League deal.
As for internal moves, the Fish called up right-hander Jorge Guzman, outfielder Monte Harrison and righty Jordan Yamamoto. The club also selected the contracts of left-hander Dan Castano, right-hander Josh A. Smith, right-hander Nick Vincent, catcher Ryan Lavarnway and infielder Eddy Alvarez. Outfielders Matt Joyce and Lewis Brinson were activated from the injured list.
It’s a dizzying sequence of moves brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak that decimated the organization’s Major League roster. Miami ultimately wound up with a reported 18 players and two coaches testing positive, and the outbreak caused scheduling delays with the Phillies, Yankees, Blue Jays and Nationals in addition to the Marlins. Miami was left with a depleted roster and forced to scramble to simply cobble together a roster and continue its season.
The losses of Alcantara and Smith will remove two of Miami’s top rotation options from the mix for the time being, while Rojas was the team’s starting shortstop. Stanek had been expected to occupy a high-leverage late-inning role, and Conley is one of the team’s most experienced bullpen pieces.
DarkSide830
yikes that poor rotation. why did they not claim Folty.

The price tag
puigpower
A couple million reasons.
Mjm117
And he sucks
DarkSide830
i mean its only a few million for the rest of the season and they need warm bodies. not saying Folty is worth the money but there is a clear need.
echozulu88
Marlins probably would rather save the money than bring in a guy for a little bit. Plus once their rotation is healthy, if Folty is no longer needed now he’s taking innings and/or you’re stuck with the contract. The other guys will cost MIA very little to get rid of once their players come back.
Briffle2
That fact that nobody claimed him says a lot. Dude sucks.
Fever Pitch Guy
Since when did they start saying Covid players are on the “injured” list? It’s ridiculous, those with Covid are not “injured”. They used to have a separate list for Covid, why did it change?
DarkSide830
it is a seperate list
echozulu88
They technically aren’t suppose to list players as being COVID positive due to HIPAA rules.
Dotnet22
Well technically they are disabled in every sense of the word but we can’t use that word anymore because the world is a crybaby place where every gets offended by every word now.
MWeller77
Dotnet22, the only people who make your argument are bullies and bigots who are just upset that people have called them out on their nonsense.
bhambrave
Manufactured outrage. We live in a hypersensitive world now.
Prospectnvstr
It’s been the “disabled list” for years AND years AND YEARS. All of a sudden there’s a huge outcry about the term disability/disabled. When I had an injured back and unable to do my job I was placed on (GASP) short term disability. Due to other issues I’m on social security disability. All this means is that I’m unable to do my job. If the MLB player is UNABLE to do his job, he SHOULD be placed on the DISABLED list.
phenomenalajs
Folty will be back in Atlanta with Soroka done for the year.

So it appears that it hit their pitchers the hardest. I don’t know what to make from this other than maybe they passed it around in the bullpen? Alcantara is a starter but I thought the starters were sitting in the stands when they weren’t pitching so that means it spread in the clubhouse as well, obviously.
DarkSide830
the lack of affect on the hitters though is what i find curious
AngelDiceClay
Maybe just maybe the pitchers went on a night out gambling possumble possumble

COVID-19 digs the longball as much as chicks do?
oldmansteve
Has a team ever had half their roster on the IL before? If this was any team other than the Marlins it would be teetering on noncompetitive.
yankees500
I mean the Yankees were pretty close last year haha
Jeff Zanghi
I know this is a bit off topic but still wow! Rojas was off to a 7/10 start to the season!
DarkSide830
we dont need to talk about that…
Mjm117
Hahah it’s definitely worth talking about in length.
yankees500
He’s now off to a 18/30 start
DarkSide830
also worth noting that Castano is the last of the 4 Ozuna trade pieces to debut, and i must say that trade has already looked pretty good for Miami. Alcantara and Gallen have looked great, Sierra could round out into a good 4th/5th OF and Castano looks solid as well. good return.
baseballpun
I wish I knew what the Marlins were asking for from STL for Yelich vs. Ozuna. If Miami was insisting on Flaherty for Yelich, I’m glad the Cards settled for Ozuna. If the Cards could have had either Yelich or Ozuna for the package they gave up, and chose Ozuna, that’s a firable offense.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I liked Alcantara, but this outrageous. Marlins actually looked good before the virus. Let’s see what happens next. The division is open- I dont think anyone is running away with it. Doubt Marlins even contend but just saying…
kje76
Not sure you can read anything into a 3-game series. They have this weird thing going with the Phillies.
markf
How did this all work in regards to the 40-man roster?
Technically correct
And what happens when these guys come back?
dtdt
Players placed on the covid-19 list do not count against the 40-man roster; the Marlins actually still have open spots on their 40-man. Eventually as players recover from covid-19 and are activated, players will have to be moved off the 40-man (dfa).

Still no Jazz in Florida?
rxbrgr
I hope the Marlins players all mailed their obituaries to their governor, Ron DeSantis, just like all those brave frontline schoolteachers did.

Ha ha! You’re funny and edgy! Because teachers are a bunch of babies for not wanting to die! Ha ha!

I feel like the players they got from the Orioles and Indians was to help them out. Not likely a trade to make a huge difference on the marlins.
Mjm117
Orioles and Indians were FLEECED! But yeah i agree.
astros_fan_84
I feel like those were moves made for the good of the game. If one team can’t field 28 platers, it threatens the integrity of the season. There’s too much to lose to not toss them a bone.
MLB absolutely needs this season be completed. I am sure it was a pretty easy call for the owners of those teams to tell the GMs to make a serviceable deal.
ahale224
Thank god they didn’t actually go out and party huh Jeter?
greenmonster08
How very yankee of Jeter and Mattingly to whine about how the Marlins total indifference for or lack of the intellectual baseline to comprehend the COVID protocols MLB instituted was the narrative of their failings and not the health of the players who legend has it only left their hotel to visit their grandmothers on their deathbeds and distribute food and clothing to the homeless. Jeter is not used to being held accountable for mistakes or failures and this situation only magnifies his unwillingness to accept responsibility commensurate with his position.
