The Mariners announced Monday that they’ve claimed right-hander Brady Lail off waivers from the White Sox and designated infielder Patrick Wisdom for assignment.
Lail, 27, made his big league debut with the Yankees in 2019 but pitched just 2 2/3 innings in his lone appearance with the club. It was a similar tale with the ChiSox, who got Lail into one game for 1 1/3 innings of work prior to designating the right-hander for assignment. He’s struggled in the upper minors as a starter, but he moved to the bullpen full-time a couple years back and has since enjoyed much better results. In 49 1/3 frames between Double-A and Triple-A in 2019, Lail pitched to a 3.83 ERA with 12.2 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9.
Wisdom, 28, hasn’t appeared in the Majors with Seattle since signing with them over the winter. He’s a career .224/.306/.408 hitter in 86 MLB plate appearances and a .252/.328/.478 hitter in parts of four Triple-A seasons. Wisdom struggled quite a bit in his first run through Triple-A, but he’s slugged 77 homers in three seasons since that time while oscillating between the Majors and Minors. He has experience at all four corner positions.

Wait, when did Wisdom leave Texas?
(Pre-emptive joke: “When did Texas ever *have* wisdom?” Rim shot.)
Seriously though, I thought Wisdom was with the Rangers.
DarkSide830
that was last year

In the Before Time?

Do the Rangers still have Bobby Witt? Witt and Wisdom
Orel Saxhiser
No, but the Royals drafted shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. as the second overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft. Adding Wisdom to the left side of their infield would be a natural move.

It says something very bad about the Mariners that they had to recall Shaw so soon. Was there nobody else available??

No idea what they see in a aged RH reliever that can’t get anyone out. I don’t care if we are winning a lot this year, we all knew we wouldn’t. What I don’t get is that they say they are going to play the young guys yet they run out garbage like Marmolejos (previously) and Shaw (second time) while not allowing younger guys to play as expected. Why not allow Delaplane or Warren or Fletcher get time over Shaw? Why not get Bishop or Fraley time on the roster where they are just wasting time with Vogelbach at this point.

Everyone on the team likes Vogey though. This guy is like that Bubba guy a few years back. A part of a season wonder. They have to have a guy who can double Vogelbach output and hit .200.

If they give Shaw some innings now, they’ll be in a better place to make a decision about him. Maybe they just want to be sure he’s no good before they release him. Or maybe they know something I don’t, and he’s going to turn out okay.
I agree about Vogelbach. I don’t think last year’s first half is what is career is going to look like. It would be nice, though, if he’d get hot enough to be worth something in a trade. If he doesn’t produce soon, I say give up.

Marmolejos was a good prospect for the Nationals. He has taken a long time to get through the minors, and it’s too soon to tell if he’ll have an MLB career or not. But the Mariners did send him over to the alternate site a couple days ago. There’s no playing time for him with Moore doing so well and the infielders being kept together.

Wisdom looks like a future KBO foreign player signing, probably not an NPB signing but it’s possible.

Lail looked solid in that Sox game. Wonder why he is not getting a shot.
Ok I will ding myself: limited sample size.
