Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager began the season on a marvelous pace, but a back problem forced him out of their game against the Giants on Aug. 7, and he hasn’t played since. Manager Dave Roberts issued an update on Seager on Tuesday, saying (via Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times) that the 26-year-old is amid a “slow progression.” While Seager has been able to swing, run and play catch this week, the Dodgers haven’t ruled out a stint on the injured list for the two-time All-Star and former National League Rookie of the Year.
Seager was a durable and highly effective part of the club from 2016-17, but Tommy John surgery limited him to 26 games the next season. He also spent time on the IL last year because of hamstring issues, though Seager did appear in 134 games. His production then was closer to very good than great, but Seager once again looked like one of the elite shortstops in the game this year prior to suffering this injury. Through 54 plate appearances in 2020, he has slashed .340/.389/.600 (176 wRC+) with three home runs.
As always, the Dodgers are loaded with depth – they’ve had the luxury of plugging in Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez at short of late – though they’re certainly a better team when Seager’s available. LA has won seven straight NL West titles, but at 11-7, it’s staring up at the Rockies right now and tied with the Padres, who have beaten the Dodgers in back-to-back days.

After he was stranded on 3rd tonight Mookie did not look too happy heading back into the dugout.

Do I remember correctly that Dodger ROYs frequently wind up having bad luck careers?
paddyo furnichuh
You may remember a few examples. The history of the franchise and it’s farm team has produced so many ROYs that there are likely some that didn’t have “good luck” careers. Seems a bit early to be labeling Seager as such. Though not many SS with his frame stay at the position. Cal was quite unique in that sense.
paddyo furnichuh
Pardon me, quite unique and unique are the same thing.
shibbynotdude
It’s hard not to add on praise to a player like Cal Ripken Jr.
BlueSkies_LA
“Quite unique” is an oxymoron.
johnrealtime
No it isn’t. It is funny when people feel the need to argue grammar on a baseball website but are wrong. One definition of quite is “ to the greatest possible degree”. It is neither grammatically incorrect nor an oxymoron
BlueSkies_LA
Wait, so now you feel a need to argue about grammar, it’s only other people who should not bring it up?
I say oxymoron, you say redundant. Let’s call the whole thing off!
alejandro 3
And “unique” is generally defined as “one of kind” or “unlike anything else,” so modifying it with “quite” is redundant.
BlueSkies_LA
Whether it’s redundant or an oxymoron depends on the context, and I can think of usages of the phrase that would be neither.
WarrenSpahn
no, sorry. “unique” is not a relative term. it is one of absolute novelty. a qualifying adjective is not operative.
oh, were we talking about baseball? baseball vocabulary is only a modest step up from surfer lingo which is limited to about two dozen words, phrases, or guttural projections, most of which begin with an F-bomb…

The Dodgers have had a lot of good rookies and prospects come up in the last 30 years. Because of that, and because their AAA squad plays in the PCL, I think sometimes their prospects are a bit overstated based on past success. I know it’s a bit dated, but Andy LaRoche always stands out. Seager, Puig, and Pederson have all had good careers, but they never really reached that consistent upper echolon of baseball that they were pegged for when they came up.
I think it’s time to move Seager off SS. He’s a big boy and hasn’t he had back injuries before?
JustCheckingIn
That was way more so with the previous regimes, mainly McCourt who would rush prospects and use their arrival as justification to not spend on free agents. Then he’d buy houses…
But I get off track
TBH that group wasn’t winning ROYs so it was more about hype of prospects in AAA, from the front office a lot of times. They’d be about .500 so fans would talk prospects often at trade deadline.
But Not really fair to group Friedman regime to McCourt and Fox just because it’s the same franchise. There’s clearly a lot smarter people making the moves now compared to mid 2000
2bbige
Nah, not really… mostly productive players. Hollandsworth washed out pretty quickly- have some very good players on the list.

GoLandCrabs
Dodgers will be fine. They haven’t had Mookie and Seager in the same lineup for a while now. The bats will come but they should bring up Lux.
BlueSkies_LA
Not the only problem by any means. They haven’t had Bellinger or Muncy in the lineup either. Management has been totally clear on Lux. They believe he is not ready.
GoLandCrabs
That was weeks ago. Roberts said he is getting close and he can’t be any less ready than Beaty.
Technically correct
Lux is coming up at precisely 10:04 p.m. next Saturday night.
BlueSkies_LA
More like a few days ago, the last time it came up.
Technically correct
Next, next week. And a.m.
Otherwise, nailed it.

Dustin May and Seager for Lindor and Brad Hand??
BlueSkies_LA
Stop. Just stop.
GoLandCrabs
Dodgers have 3 LHRP better than Hand. Seager is better than Lindor. And yeah lets add May on top of all that. Its a great deal from a Padres fan to sabatoge the Dodgers.
Briffle2
Seager is not better than Lindor.
BlueSkies_LA
Here we go again.
GoLandCrabs
I’ll give you this, Lindor is a better defender. Seager is a better hitter and its strange so many people cant see it with their obvious stats.
JustCheckingIn
So long as he’s putting up 2016/2017/2020 Corey Seager numbers while playing a passable SS…. He’s definitely mighty close in value
The numbers are on fangraphs. Lindors the better defender, Seager profiles as the better hitter. Everyone seems to forget how good Corey Seager was before concurrent hip and elbow surgeries. Spoiler: he needed to heal
But he didn’t forget how to hit. He’s been out a week and I’m pretty sure he still leads all of baseball in hard hit balls this year. He’s hitting 340/389/600 nearly 1/3 into the year, and his expected numbers are better than that line!
Lindors great. So is Seager
Then you’re talking Dustin May for Brad Hand in essence. And yeah good luck with that one. LAD Wouldn’t give May up last year for Mookie, but will do it for a reliever!
larry48
dumb trade, Hands is having a bad year for second year in a row. May will be Ace of pitching staff along with Buehler. Lindor is a free agent and just sign him if you want him but don’t trade May for anybody.
