The Tigers announced today that they have outrighted infielder Jordy Mercer. The veteran elected free agency after clearing waivers.
Mercer, who is closing in on his 34th birthday, hasn’t received many opportunities after being added to the active roster to open the season. He had made the club after inking a minor-league deal over the offseason.
Once a regular with the Pirates, Mercer joined the Detroit organization last year. After dealing with some injuries early, he ultimately turned in a productive .270/.310/.438 effort over 271 plate appearances. And defensive metrics were less than enthused with his glovework at shortstop.
I wouldn’t mind the Yankees picking him up as a utility player. Why not? Nothing to lose except a roster spot.
Probably is a better hitter but doesn’t have the speed or defense of Wade. Might as well see what Wade can do
OhDear- Wade is ok. A better defender and better speed, maybe? I always liked Thairo Estrada more then Wade. I wish Estrada wasn’t sent down.
Jeter sending his private jet to get Mercer to Miami in time for tonight’s game.
@solaris602- I can definitely see that happening for sure. Just make sure that the hated A-Roid is nowhere near that private jet before taking off
Is his private plane named Covid-19?
Why would Yankees pick him up. At least Wade on the bench as a pinch runner
@mlbnyyfan- Yes, Wade play’s great defense and has good speed. But in my household we call him “Not hit, all glove Wade”
If you can outright an infielder, can you inright an outfielder?
Well played, well played
Sorry to see him go, but Tigers need to play the future, and that he was not.
I think it’s a pretty good sign that it’s time to hang ’em up when you get cut by the Tigers
Solid utility guy , not gonna wow you but I’d take him on the bench 2-3 days a week.
