Let’s check in on a few injury notes from around the majors…
- Mets second baseman Robinson Cano is hopeful that he’ll come off the injured list when he’s eligible on Aug. 14, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com tweets. Cano went to the IL on Tuesday with a Grade 2 left adductor strain, which halted what may have been a redemption story for the 37-year-old. While Cano endured a nightmarish first season as a Met in 2019, he got off to a blistering .412/.462/.559 start in 39 plate appearances this year prior to his injury.
- Athletics left-hander A.J. Puk remains an exciting prospect for the club, but various arm injuries have prevented the 25-year-old from making a major league start. It doesn’t appear as if that will change in 2020. Manager Bob Melvin said that Puk, who’s working back from shoulder inflammation, is expected to pitch out of the bullpen if he takes the hill this year, per Shayna Rubin of the Mercury News. However, the A’s still don’t have a timetable for Puk’s season debut.
- It appears the right shoulder strain that sent Rockies reliever Wade Davis to the IL over the weekend will keep him on ice for the foreseeable future. Manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Davis still hasn’t begun throwing yet, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post relays. Davis’ injury is the latest setback in what has been a horrid Colorado tenure since he signed a three-year, $52MM deal with the club going into 2018. The three-time All-Star has recorded a 6.18 ERA/4.67 FIP in 110 2/3 innings as a Rockie.
- With right-hander Kendall Graveman on the injured list because of neck issues, the Mariners are calling on lefty Nick Margevicius to step into their rotation, according to manager Scott Servais (via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). The 24-year-old Margevicius picked up 12 starts as a Padre in 2019, but his year didn’t go well. He wound up with 57 innings of 6.79 ERA/5.64 FIP pitching and 6.63 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9.

Is the Cano/Diaz trade going to be what costs Brodie his job or will it be wasting the best starter in baseball and some pretty good sticks due to the inability to upgrade the defense and bullpen
dugmet
That’s a fan’s perspective – which is typically incomplete and short-sited.
oscar gamble
Of course it’s a fan’s perspective. As is everything posted on this site.
mlb1225
Isn’t that kind of contradictory though? The Diaz trade was an attempt to upgrade the bullpen, as was the signings of Betances, Familia, Wilson.
If he gets fired, it’s going to be because of trades that have set them back. The Cano/Diaz trade was the Mets’ Archer trade. Kelnic looks like a future All-Star who could get MVP votes, and Dunn looks like a solid starter. Plus they gave up Anthony Kay and SWR for Stroman who hasn’t even pitched in 2020. Granted, no one could have forseen what was going to happen this year, but I’d rather have SWR than Stroman based on the position of the Mets at the deadline in 2019.
MetsFan22
Dunn looks like a solid strarter? Lol. I promise you Kelenic never receives one MVP vote. He’ll be a conforto type player in production at best. As far for cano a Diaz. Cano was turning the corner and Diaz still has elite stuff. If Diaz and cano just help us win the big one. One year, I could care less what Kelenic does
findingnimmo
Couldn’t have said any of this better metsfan22
Joggin’George
Neither Cano nor Diaz are helping the Mets win anything. If Kelenic turns into Michael Conforto the Mets lost the trade big time. Dumb trade. Bad process, bad result.
MetsFan22
You have a magic ball?? Could you tell me the lotto numbers? I’m trying to get money.
Joggin’George
If I’m wrong when all is said and done then fine… for now I’m just trying to predict based on knowledge at hand. (Which is useless for determining lottery numbers, as they are totally random and thus, entirely unpredictable.)
bigdaddyhacks
And this mentality is why the Mets continue to decline. Pure delusion.
brandons-3
You don’t get points in that job for trying. If it worked out to it’s fullest potential, he’d get the credit for bringing in an elite closer and a productive future HOF Robinson Cano.
I’m a Braves fan, so my comment was more in the spirit of poking fun at the Mets. Obviously, one trade isn’t going to sink a GM’s job. As good as the Mets can be on paper, their defense, bullpen, and health severely limits the ways they can win games. In theory, they can win the division, but they’d need an awfully lot to go right to surpass better overall clubs in Atlanta and Washington. Though, Atlanta’s rotation is filled with uncertainty right now.
MetsFan22
Look at the Braves roster and the Mets roster… you’ll see on paper the Braves roster isn’t better. If you look at numbers and not biased.
Nats have a horrible offense. The might finish in 4th
DarkSide830
i know ill get garbage for this like I always do, but that trade alone shouldn’t be as criticized as it was because everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong with it. Diaz imploding out of nowehere, Cano suddenly taking a step back with no good advance notice, Kelenic and Dunn both having great years, etc. the fact is if Diaz played up to his potential he would have been worth what was thought of Kelenic and Dunn at the time. Cano is expensive but if he was playing like 2018 or 2020 Cano he would have been worth it and then some when you factored in the savings from Bruce and Swarz. as bad as this one was, BVW has made much more lopsided trades. I saw a Mets site mentioning this. Three times in the past two years now the Mets have traded decent prospects for, lets face it, 4th/5th defensive first OFs in Broxton, Marisnick, and now Hamilton. those trades are firable offenses, especially with the early success of Blake Taylor in Houston.
Halo11Fan
Cano tested positive for PEDs. Sorry, that alone explains his step back.
ayrbhoy
Darkside- I’m not a Mets fan. I’m a Mariners fan- so I know all about trades gone wrong. If you google worst MLB trades you will see a heap of Seattle trades on that list, at least a few on the top 10 worst -Bedard trade, Shin Soo Choo trade, Rafael Soriano, Omar Vizquel, Carlos Guillen, David Ortiz, Tino Martinez and my favorite – the Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek trade for Heathcliff Slocumb. Heathcliff who? I feel your pain Darkside- sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and the Mariners almost always lose.
Joggin’George
ayrbhoy, you guys got Buhner for Ken Phelps… That was a good one, just ask Mr. Costanza (And I say this as a huge Ken Phelps fan)
brandons-3
Yeah, there was definitely bad luck, but at the same time: we live in the world where all of those things did happen. The bullpen didn’t get the upgrade it needed, there’s more money on the books, and they lost prospect capital. Brodie literally struck out on the three basic methods we judge trades: (upgrade to team, financial obligations, prospect loss/gain)

Why not trade DeGrom. The Mets traded Ryan and Seaver why not DeGrom. Sometimes you have move backward to move forward. Look at what the Yankees did in 2016 trading Chappie and Miller. The Mets can get so much more than Torres for DeGrom. It just takes one team desperate enough to win like the Cubbies were when they traded Torres. Mets may not seriously contend for 2-3 more years. Wasting the prime years of DeGrom. Call Atlanta would they trade Acuna for DeGrom. Make some calls Brodie no guts no glory.
whynot 2
Typical delusional yankee fan…
1) No one knows what is going to happen with this season so no team in their right mind would surrender enough young talent to make it worth while for the Mets to trade the (current) best pitcher in the game.
2) why would the Braves even consider trading a franchise player, who is on an insanely team friendly contract?
3) his name is Chapman not Chappie. what is it with Yankees fans calling players by silly nicknames like awestruck 10 year olds?
andremets
How did those Ryan anSeaver seals work out? You can add David Cone to the list too. True Aces are irreplaceable.
nyy42
Have the Yankees won anything since that trade?
pinstripes17
um yes? they’ve won a hell of a lot more than your team, that’s for sure!
MetsFan22
No they haven’t. Mets have actually made it to the WS.
brandons-3
IF and a big current IF, New York ever traded deGrom, it wouldn’t happen for another year or two at the earliest. Brodie certainly isn’t going to trade him as long as he’s running the show.
Maybe I could see the new ownership cleaning house and bringing in a new front office. If I recall when Brodie was hired, he was the only candidate who didn’t suggest some level of rebuild to the Wilpons. If/when the Mets decide to make a front office change, the next GM could very well opt to tear it down and start over. But again, that’s at least a year and an ownership/front office change away from even being speculation.
AHH-Rox
Silver lining for the Rockies is that the injury makes it a lot less likely that Davis will reach the threshold for his vesting option.

Puk is going to be a bust huh?
Halo11Fan
Puk is in his age 25 season. I don’t know why people think when a player comes back from Tommy John surgery they always hit the floor running with few setbacks.
Puk’s odds are the same as any pitcher that has Tommy John surgery. The chances are good he’ll be what he was before the surgery.
Puk had TJ surgery with no track record of major league success. Since pitchers are hard to develop, that should be more concerning than TJ surgery.
mlbnyyfan
Why is it crazy to think trading DeGrom is the worst thing. The Mets should call a team like the Ray’s or Padres and see what it would take. Both teams Rays or Padres could easily win a WS now with DeGrom and both teams have the prospects to allow the Mets rebuild in the right direction.
slund24
The point is why would they trade DeGrom this year, in a year that will quite possibly come to an end before the WS. You are not giving up major prospects this season for anyone. Trade deadline this year will not see a whole lot of top prospects traded.
whynot 2
I’m surprised you haven’t suggested the Yankees take him off their hands for Frazier.
mlbnyyfan
Haha. Only if Yankees got a bucket of balls for Frazier. The Mets would never trade DeGrom to Yankees. The Yankees could offer Torres, Judge, and more the Mets still No way only when pigs fly.
Joggin’George
You’ll never get worthwhile value by trading deGrom. You’d need at least 2 top ten prospects for it to be worth it, and how many teams even have that to trade? Maybe one or two? Trading deGrom is nuts.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
I’ve been a diehard mets fan since way back. Yes the cano Diaz deal has sucked, but so tired of hearing about it. If these guys produces the same people knocking it would be praising the trade. That’s baseball some work out some dont. Now if and when Kelnick makes the Hof lol then I’ll eat my hat.
whynot 2
You know these same people would be complaining if the Mets had not made a trade.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
Absolutely Brodie van stinking had to do something.
parkers
When deals are made the average fan has no idea about any low level prospect. They listen to some media hot shot tell them what to think about it. We were told that Conforto was a poor defender. McNeil was not anything special. DeGrom was signed as a short stop, not a Cy Young caliber pitcher. Conforto has proven to be a decent Out fielder, tracking balls above average, average arm and speed. McNeil was not considered a top prospect yet has become an all star, versatile tough out.It is amazing to read all the BVW haters. Monday morning QB’s a plenty.
king beas
None of those players were brought in by BVW he deserves 0 credit for their success. Other than the jd davis trade he’s been a disaster
