The Indians announced today that they have designated infielder Christian Arroyo for assignment. That cleared one of two roster spots the club needs to trim its active roster down to 28 men.
To open another, the Indians optioned outfielders Greg Allen and Daniel Johnson while activating fellow outfielder Delino DeShields. He had been sidelined on the COVID-19 injured list.
Arroyo, 25, was a first-round pick of the Giants back in 2013, he cracked Top 100 prospect rankings from 2016-18. The Giants, though, flipped him to the Rays in the 2017 Evan Longoria deal, and he never got much of a look on a deep Rays roster. Tampa Bay traded him to Cleveland last summer in a deal that primarily netted international bonus money. Arroyo is a .215/.280/.342 hitter in 251 plate appearances spread over the past four seasons but has a career .298/.359/.487 slash in 418 Triple-A plate appearances. Arroyo has logged time at second base, third base and shortstop, so he has some versatility, but he’s also out of minor league options.

Say it with me:
“I think *enter any MLB team’s name* should claim him”

Another top prospects that just never figured it out. He’s the type of player the A’s would tell u to stay away from. Just because he has the physical potential, he didn’t have the other intangibles that make a good baseball player

I don’t know, he’s out of options and wouldn’t be a clear upgrade over Eddy “former silver medalist speed skater” Alvarez or Jon “BGSU alumni” Berti.

I see him back on the Giants again.
solaris602
Agreed. I can’t believe SF hasn’t brought Kelby Tomlinson back yet.

Spex!
champion1701
Because Tomlinson was trash and still is. Thankfully Farhan recognizes this.
pustule bosey
he wasn’t trash but he was a scrub – he is worth having for depth but don’t expect any extra bases out of the guy
Baseball 1600
There’s no way he makes the Giants roster for this 60 game season. We just sent down Duggar and Suarez, both way more valuable than Arroyo.
scottn59c
Giants have plenty of middle infield depth. Still haven’t seen Avital Abelino this season, who is probably as or more productive than Arroyo.
pustule bosey
I mean Abelino is essentially the same guy as arroyo from the yankees system initially.

Welcome to Miami young man!

Mets should sign him to try out as a second baseman, and potential shortstop insurance.
Kingman#26
Come back to SF! I have his close out black t-shirt.

I remember when fans were pissed that we traded him for Longoria. He turned out to be become a big bust.
pittsburghbob69
I was pissed when he was traded for Longoria. I Wanted him back in the McClutchen deal. I saw an infield of J.Bell-1B, K.Newman-2B, C.Tucker-SS, C.Arroyo-3B. Pirates did much better with B.Reynolds, K.Crick and 500,000 in Int. signing money though. I think he would have had more of a chance in Pittsburgh though.
pittsburghbob69
I still wouldn’t mind Pgh giving him a shot. We don’t have much to lose this year. Although, I think most top prospects are better off when traded from original team. I think most top prospects have it good coming up and think it’ll last forever. And being traded, brings them back down to earth and starts a new fire and giving them another chip on their shoulder. I think pittsburgh saw that with Glasnow and A.Meadows. And the Nationals with L.Giolito.
It seems like Arroyo already had that shot.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
This kid was so over hyped coming up through the minors and hasn’t panned out , however he really has not had much opportunity either. I would not mind seeing the mets to take a pop at this guy.
sufferforsnakes
How long until they designate Domingo Santana? That guy stinks.
Michael Chaney
I was really hoping they’d give him some at bats this year. In a longer season they might have, but they didn’t have the time to try and develop him this year.
Hopefully he clears waivers because I’d love for him to get a longer leash.
