The Dodgers have promoted utilityman Zach McKinstry to the active roster, per a club announcement. He’ll take the roster spot of southpaw Victor Gonzalez, who was optioned down.
It’s quite an achievement for the 25-year-old McKinstry, who entered the professional ranks as a 33rd-round draft pick back in 2016. He’ll give the Dodgers yet another versatile position player to plug in as game situations warrant.
McKinstry obviously wasn’t seen as a significant prospect when he was selected out of Central Michigan, where he showed excellent contact ability and plate discipline but little in the way of power. That profile shifted last year, as he turned in a cumulative .300/.366/.516 batting line with 19 long balls over 479 plate appearances between the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
33rd rounder making it, such a beautiful thing!
no doubt …dodgers always seem to find gems!!!!!
It’s freaking annoying as a Braves fan who’s laboring through the process finishing off a rebuild. Sure Acuna kinda fits that mold, but seems like the dodgers and cardinals could put a janitor from Russia into a baseball uniform and the guy turns into a gem.
Braves had a janitor that did alright. He wasn’t Russian, but when it comes to baseball playing janitors teams can’t afford to be too picky.
Braves are about as good at drafting and grooming as anyone. If you want obscure-remember El Oso Blanco?
I’m pretty sure that he’s the janitor that was being referred to
Those numbers mean nothing, especially in the pcl
It’s not about the numbers, even though they are pretty great. This kid works hard and deserves this chance. Looking forward to watching him in the next few weeks.
He looked great in Spring Training.
And… already optioned.
Just kidding. Not until Friday.
An odd promotion given the roster being cut to 28 soon. Does this mean Seager and/or Betts not playing today? Wonder who else will be cut to get the Dodgers to 28 from 30. McKinstry and ? Probably Dennis Santana?
My guess, Ed Rios goes on the IL
Socalbum…. hope you and your family are okay and safe. I remember you had a daughter or son playing baseball? Am I right?
Anyway, Aarlan here.
Rios? Because the the pitch he took on the foot? Maybe. He looked to be waddling on that one pretty good.
WOW! Great to hear from you! Entire family is good, including grandkids. Grandson played high school baseball 4 years, then took up golf, snow boarding in college. Granddaughter is quite a softball player. You have a great memory. I check MLBTR every day, but usually comment only on Dodgers. I will look for you. My very best to you and yours – stay safe and well.
A lot of these promotions seem odd to me. Gonzales was a player the Dodgers used a roster spot to protect last year and he was brought up for just a few days and one inning. Unclear what they will do with McKinstry but I’d be surprised if he was up for much longer, unless somebody is injured we haven’t heard about yet.
Ever the optimist.
Ha-ha. I have to admit I was totally wrong, they didn’t option McKinstry on Friday. It happened today.
Kick some butt McKinstry! Happy for ya!
I’m looking forward to seeing him play. Back in the original spring training, Dave Roberts said that McKinstry would not only be up this season but would be a factor.
tomas/Cey Hey – The finding of Zacks spring training stats elude me. They were note worthy in my pandamit derterioated mind.
His story is amazing. Good for him!
He will be replacing Kike on the roster next season.
