The Milwaukee Brewers designated Brock Holt for assignment and selected Jace Peterson from their alternate site, the team announced.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Holt signed this past offseason and the Brewers have a club option for a second year. That said, the long-time Red Sox utility man had gotten off to a horrendous start. Through 36 plate appearances, Holt was hitting just .100/.222/.100 with 9 strikeouts and without an extra-base hit. The career .269/.338/.370 hitter obviously can do better, but in a shortened season, the Brewers clearly decide they did not have time to wait for a turnaround.
Holt signed for a $3.25MM guarantee after spending the past seven seasons with the Red Sox. The expectation was that Holt would fill in around the infield, but the Brewers aren’t short on other options – Peterson included – and Holt simply wasn’t hitting.
Peterson, 30, stands to replace Holt both on the roster and in his role. Capable of playing just about anywhere on the diamond, Peterson has bounced around, but appeared in the majors every season since 2014. The Brewers will be his fifth team, after the Padres, Braves, Orioles, and Yankees.
iwojimausmc
Could the Red Sox reunite with him? Haven’t been too impressed with Peraza so far.
Connorsoxfan
Bring him home!! We’re gonna need INF’s in any event. Moreland gets shipped out and Chavis fills for him… need an extra body anyways.
looiebelongsinthehall
Would love for a reunion but he likely won’t clear waivers. My guess is Boston passes which would be stupid since they’re under the threshold. Give the Brockstar and fans an early Xmas present.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
I heard the Yankees are going after him.
pasha2k
Bring back the Brockstar!!!!!
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Oh no not this crap again.
Mlb1971
Gary – you are the only one with common sense on mlbtraderumors.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Yahoomlb@, I’m just referring to pashik and “bring back brockstar” a thousand times a day. You’re being sarcastic I assume? Sorry for asking, a lot of things go over my head. I don’t want to miss out on a compliment if one was intended LOL. “Only one” reference makes that not very likely though 🙂
looiebelongsinthehall
Why because a player who surpassed all expectations, was great in the clubhouse, did community charitable work and wanted to return was forced to look elsewhere is still appreciated by a fan base not even a year later? If he was replaced by a hotshot rookie or another seasoned vet, it would have been easier to accept. Peralta? Like the tuna commercial, “sorry Charlie”. Not buying into the get over it argument. Sometimes ownership needs to hear from the fans.
Mlb1971
The 32-year-old Holt signed a one-year, $3.25-million contract with the Brewers during February. He went just 3-for-30 (.100) with a .222 on-base percentage, .100 slugging percentage, no extra-base hits and one RBIs in 16 games. He struck out nine times and walked four times.
From Masslive.com
gbs42
@pasha2k- yep, that .100 BA looks really good. Who wouldn’t want him back?
soxsam32
I mean they desperately need something to make games mildly entertaining to watch again
Which probably means they won’t go after him.
cgallant
I like him back with the Sox for outfield depth too. Should they trade JBJ or Pillar.
jdgoat
In such a short season with a close race, you really can’t afford to let guys like this work their way out of a slump. Don’t fault them at all for cutting bait so quickly.
arc89
they actually never gave him a chance to play. He is a platoon player that hits right handed pitching. Somebody will pick him up as a playoff depth piece. It probably came down to Sogard or Holt and they liked Sogard defense better
Briffle2
He had one at bat against a lefty. One. Out of 30. He had his chances.
User 4245925809
Really? Are the NYY about to DFA gary Sanchez also perhaps since he’s been awful since 2017?
Dorothy_Mantooth
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees DFA Sanchez in the off season vs. pay him in year 2 of arbitration. His current salary is $5M and arbitration will raise that to $8M+ even with the bad season he is having. The Yankees have 9 or 10 arbitration eligible players including big names like Judge, Torres, Urshela, Frazier, etc.. and they will be way over the $208M CBT if they sign them all, making them 3 time offenders. They also need to sign at least 1 if not 2 starting pitchers with Happ, Tanaka and Paxton all moving to free agency this season. Severino won’t be ready until late May or June and German will still have about 20 games to serve on his suspension…if he even wants to come back. Yankees really need to win it all this year as this offseason will be very challenging for them.
GP John
No way Yankees DFA Sanchez, Id be surprised if they even considered trading him
pasha2k
They won’t let Sanchez go.
lucas0622
If they DFA Sanchez he will defiently get claimed by someone
Baseballallday
The Yankees can blow through the tax and it won’t matter at all. For how much money that team makes every year a few million in taxes is like pennies for them. Honestly for a big market team, Red Sox fans should be offended at what they’re putting on the field in Boston. I can’t see the Yankees doing that. I think you’re crazy if you really think this is a one year window for the Yankees. You kinda sound like a bitter Red Sox fan with a lot of wishful thinking… Yanks probably end up resigning Tanaka anyway. With cole as the number one and severino coming back before the all star break they really only need one other middle of the rotation guy and they’re fine for next year.
Ashtem
Since 2018 to be honest
Briffle2
How do you not understand the difference between Gary Sanchez and Brock Holt?
Joggin’George
Sanchez was very good in ‘18. Not sure what you’re looking at. And Holt has exactly 2 decent years as a back up guy. No comparison.
jdgoat
How was Sanchez “very good” in 2018? He was below average on both sides of the ball…
jdgoat
Sanchez sucks but he does have a lot more value and control. I don’t really see how they’re comparable.
DarkSide830
Red Sox fans: get him back here at all costs
pasha2k
Bring back the Brockstar!!!!!!!! They didn’t deserve him….send him hone!!!!
Ashtem
Wouldn’t mind seeing him back in Boston again.
Vanilla Good
Hey I’m just throwing this out there, and let me know if I’m crazy because no one else is thinking this, but maybe he could reunite with the Red Sox? Anyone else?
Gigorilla
Ice – your kidding, right?
2020ball
Nah, its mine
themustache
A radical idea, but you might be on to something.
Gigorilla
The Brew Crew is a mess, and the boy wonder Stearns made it.
Holt, Gyorko, Sogard, Smoak, L. Morrison, Brett Anderson, R Healy, = piss poor off season.
Good thing it’s only 60 games, otherwise the Crew could’ve lost 90+ this year.
Let’s sign some more 32+ yeasr old journeymen has beens to $2-$4M contracts
wild bill tetley
Many pointed this out during the offseason and were vilified for it. Stearns showed his true colors and is perhaps the most overrated GM. His only saving grace is the fact his organization won’t break the bank, using the lack of funds as an excuse for any shortcomings despite the fact his overpaid for over half the guys you mentioned.
g4
Hard to say Stearns overpaid for anybody making under $4M on a 1-year deal. Settling is more accurate. It’s not like if only he didn’t sign these retreads he’d of had the money for Grandal, Keuchel, $50M+ etc. stars. If there’s a knock against Stearns, it’s that he sold off the farm to stay afloat as an above-average but hardly elite contender. But settling for discount FAs and praying for lucky returns is just what limited payrolls have to do. Blame ownership if you think more should have been spent. I guarantee Stearns woulda been happy to throw more dough around if allowed.
wild bill tetley
It isn’t hard because I just did. Brewers needed a SS, Catcher and maybe a SP. Got Narvaez, ok fine.
Then spent over 7-mil on Garcia, 5-mil on Anderson, 4-mil twice on two bench players in Smoak and Sogard. Other money sprinkled that wasn’t necessary. Didn’t fully address the needs. That’s code for “we aren’t ready to win”. Then extended Yelich. Good chance Brewers look to deal him in 2022.
stubby66
Ok i wouldn’t have dfa’d him. I would have sent Sogard, Smoak and Gyorko first. Clean house and go with a bunch of young guys. Use the rest of the season to give Nottingham, Taylor and Erceg time and experience. Heck maybe even trade Gamel and bring Ray up. im not giving up on the season at all but I think we could still make the playoffs but do it with players that are hungry.
Judge_Smails45
Reds. They wanted him in the offseason
AZPat
That’s what the Red Sox need. A 32 year old utility player.
pasha2k
Shuddup
AZPat
Now the Reds could use him instead of Van Meter for a left handed bat.
Judge_Smails45
I’d still keep VanMeter. His bat will come around. I mean look at Winker. Turned it around.
Armaments216
VanMeter still has minor league options so has value long term. There’s no one on the Reds worth DFA’ing to make room for a utility guy who can’t play SS. Or pitch out of the bullpen.
senior52
I don’t understand Red Sox fans infatuation with this guy.
Old User Name
He played well for Boston. Every team has one of those guys the fanbase loves.
CowboysoldierFTW
Its like with that Falafa guy in Texas. Just caude they are below average doesnt mean they are not loved.
Old User Name
Yankees fans feel that way about Ronald Torreyes.
I remember Sweeny Murti commenting that Yankees fans were upset they got Giancarlo Stanton and let Torreyes go.
B-Strong
He did his job well enough on the field and he was an absolute jem to community off the field.
B-Strong
*Gem
Holy brain fart.
agentx
I thought maybe you were a Holograms fan.
costergaard2
Truly outrageous !!!
Mlb1971
I am a Red Sox fan and i do not get it either. He was a utility player who had a few good years as a UTILITY player with very little power and ok
The Red Sox would be better served by bringing up Dalbed, Chatham, or Duran!!!
acell10
I’m a red sox fan and I think it’s a bit extreme. He was a nice energy guy, decent utility player and did a lot in the community. I’m grateful for what he gave the team but the way people clamor for him you’d think he was the second coming of David Ortiz or Ted Williams.
Dorothy_Mantooth
He was the glue that kept the Red Sox locker room together after Pedroia left. While I’d love to see him come back, I don’t think Chaim wants him here. He wants to build his own team and unfortunately he doesn’t think too highly of the Brock Star. With that said, if he clears waivers I’d love to see Boston replace Lin or Peraza with him, but it might take some player/owner intervention to get him back here.
pasha2k
Either of those players are a bust at 2nd base. The Brockstar brings more to the team then just play, as Dorothy said. IMO I think it would be a moral booster to bring him back where he belongs.
pgmitchell
i want to throw up to all brockstar references
pasha2k
Whose stoping you from doing do?
bobtillman
Might be a good PR move before the faithful burn Bloom’s house down.
Why not? Right now, more New Englanders are watching Mother Angelica than NESN.
elmedius
They’re still watching NESN… the Bruins are doing well.
angelsfan4life
He hasn’t been able to hit, since they took his iPhone watch away from him
pasha2k
Shuddup
pasha2k
This our chance to make our feelings known to the Redsox to bring The Brockstar home to Boston. The 2 at 2nd lousy, BRING HIM HOME!!!!!
getright11
Shuddup
looiebelongsinthehall
Pasha and getright, you both made me laugh as reading Shuddup reminded me of my grandmother who was born in “the old country”. Her acceNot us still in my head even though she passed at the age of 94 in 1984.
pasha2k
Ha ha I will never shuddup but I can tell others!!
DiehardFriarsFan
Padres Fan, here. I have always liked Brock Holt, and had hoped the Friars would sign him. The Brewers are making a bad decision. But that doesn’t surprise me. Kind of like how our GM- A.J. Preller, swindled their asses in the Zach Davies/Trent Grisham, for Luis Urias/Eric Lauer trade.
colonel flagg
Swindled, after less than 30 games? May need more time to evaluate that trade.
30 Parks
Holt is the new Rich Garces. Sox fans have an odd obsession with this guy.
miltpappas
El Guapo!
bobcavic
I was in Montreal the day el Guapo came up to bat. The crowd blew the roof off. You’d think it was Game Seven of the World Series!!
wild bill tetley
Those 8 fans are loud.
bobcavic
Because it was Boston playing, it was a rare sellout. It was dominated by Sox fans who made the drive north.
miltpappas
Maybe silly to say, but perhaps Holt is “homesick” and/or doesn’t like Milwaukee? He loved the Boston area, owned a very nice home in nearby affluent Needham and probably figured he’d be able to stay with the Sox. Had Dombrowski stayed, he probably would have re-signed Brock.
DiehardFriarsFan
User- mIltpappas: This could very well be the case, yes. I agree.
Andy51
White Sox fan here. Leury Garcia injured and out for rest of regular season. Holt would be a logical replacement given his versatility plus needed lefty. Had a string of solid years leading up to this year. Hope we move on this fast.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Ryon Healy .167
Morrison .120
Smoak .195
Sogard .194
Gyorko .200
Holt .100
Need I write more? A pathetic offseason. Sometimes players feel more confident in certain cities & atmospheres. along with certain team mates. The Brewers simply couldn’t find that recipe. Good luck to Holt, always liked him.
Gigorilla
Thanks for the shout out to my comment below.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Maybe teams need to start using Psychologists to help them team up certain personalities? Just a thought……….
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
DFA Peraza, sign Holt. He’s a guy who belongs here.
Dorothy_Mantooth
You know Brock would bat well over .300 if he returned to Boston. How do we make it happen? JD needs his hug-buddy back!
pinstripes17
can’t hit without the apple watch
Dorothy_Mantooth
Brock can hit in Fenway with one eye (he’s already proven that).
Charlie Midnite
Lin should be DFA’d his defense is terrible, hes developed the yips throwing to 1st base and his bat is WEAK! Brockstar every day of the week over Lin.
miltpappas
But Lin is as cheap as you can get and the Sox have apparently decided to “go cheap”, at least for a few years.
pasha2k
Chaim Bloom is on Instagram, make your feelings known!
Rsox
Time to come home Brock
Gigorilla
Brock is no Paul Molitor — give it up RSox fans. He is more like a poor mans Jim Gantner.
Pay him the money to be a good clubhouse guy. LMFAO Sox fans, or as you say ‘Brockstar”
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
True blue Gigorilla, he’ll hit a strong .250 (which so far this year is decent) & his smile will bring the sun back to the Boston horizon.
pasha2k
You are so right Curly.
Nobaseball20
The Redsox owners are cheap, cheap and cheap. They would only bring him back
For the MLB minimum. HGTV reruns are better than Obrien crew.
wild bill tetley
They blasted through the luxury threshold in recent memory. I’d say they aren’t that cheap. I’d point elsewhere long before looking toward Boston.
