The Blue Jays have placed right-hander Matt Shoemaker on the 10-day injured list due to shoulder inflammation, the club announced. Righty Jacob Waguespack was recalled from the club’s alternate training site to take Shoemaker’s spot on the active roster.
Shoemaker has a 4.91 ERA, 3.57 K/BB, and 8.8 K/9 over 25 2/3 innings this season. An ugly 2.8 HR/9 is responsible for much of that ERA, as Shoemaker has allowed a league-leading eight home runs. While the performance has been a little shaky thus far, Shoemaker had at least been a somewhat reliable source of innings for a Jays team that hasn’t had much consistency from its rotation.
If the losses of Shoemaker and star prospect Nate Pearson weren’t enough for Toronto, Trent Thornton lasted only an inning in today’s 5-4 loss to the Rays due to his own case of right elbow inflammation. This was the same injury that put Thornton on the IL earlier this month, and while there hasn’t yet been any word on his status, it seems likely that Thornton might again be sidelined so he can get fully healthy.
Hyun Jin Ryu, Tanner Roark, and Chase Anderson now stand as the only three healthy options in the Blue Jays rotation, though Anderson is being brought along slowly after he missed several weeks recovering from an oblique injury. Waguespack and Anthony Kay are among the candidates to fill in as starters, Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith and other reporters, though naturally moving them into starting roles will also lessen a Toronto bullpen that has seen a lot of work this season. As Nicholson-Smith noted, the recent pitching injuries will only intensify the club’s already-stated desire to acquire more arms by the trade deadline.

Sunday’s are not a good day to be a Blue Jay
DarkSide830
let one of the kids start. you’re only harming the rebulid by not giving any of them a chance.
MarkoRock68
Agree- We need to stretch out Kay and Hatch, bring up SRF from the Alternate to put him in the pen along with one of(maybe both ) Murray/Murphy . We also lost Thornton today by the looks of things.
smuzqwpdmx
Kay absolutely deserves a spot in the rotation and that’s probably why they stretched him out today. But Hatch has never pitched above AA before so I’d rather keep him in the pen this year. Merryweather or Waguespack can have that start.
It’s really not much of a loss. We knew Shoemaker had a 90% chance of getting hurt, and Thornton is a 5th starter type. Plenty of options to replace them. The problem is that if they’re going to baby the replacements along at 15 more pitches per outing they’ll be built up to 100 pitches just in time for the season to end (only a slight exaggeration). And that might be a reason to let Reid-Foley start, if he’s built up already.
smuzqwpdmx
I forgot about Yamaguchi, he’s worth considering for the rotation too. If they don’t want to risk building up a young arm too fast, he’s an expendable experienced option and he wanted to start.
MarkoRock68
Good point i overlooked him as well, has been pitching well of late. Wags from taxi to pen, bring up SWR for pen and then Zeuch? for taxi squad.
Tough to know which of the “starters” at the alternate are doing well. Never seen any info on these guys. I didn’t like Thornton pitching on short rest just back from injury so let’s not rush him back this time .

Double AA is the new Triple AAA
The Human Rain Delay
To be fair we are at the midway point and they are in the playoffs at the moment
Monkey’s Uncle
Remember when Shoemaker could stay healthy? Yeah, me either.
The Human Rain Delay
I do-
2014-16 He was very good with the Angels
71 starts 3.7 era sub 1.20 whip
Briffle2
That’s still like 25 starts missed in three years.
The Human Rain Delay
Nah, 2014 was his first year starting and he didnt enter the rotation until May, he wasnt going 32 starts lol
He had 1 short Dl stint in 3 years and his peripherals in 15 were a lot better than his end numbers- IT was a very very good 3 yr run then injs derailed him in 2017
Baseball Reference is always your friend
Briffle2
And what about the missed starts the next two years?
I never said he didn’t have a good run, my point was, which you obviously missed, is that even in his “healthy” stretch, he still missed starts. He’s never pitched close to a complete season.
20, 24, 27, 14.
And nice last comment, smart ass.
The Human Rain Delay
Try following the post
Remember when Shoemaker could stay healthy?
Yes I do, 2014-2016, and he was very good
Then the real uniformed smart ass shined thru to even upstage the Og poster! Great job! 1 Dl stint in 3 years for a pitcher is almost an iron man for the position
Briffle2
“That’s still like 25 starts missed in three years”
Is this untrue in anyway?
Check baseball reference, it can come in handy.
The Human Rain Delay
I think you should – He lost his last month in 16 and started in the pen till Mid May in 14 –
25 missed starts is just showing a lack of knowledge and even worse being too lazy to head over to BR and look at game logs yourself to get the Real picture- But thats fine for you you just seem to want to spew hate newayzs so im sure the facts just hinder that path –
How many starters make 32 starts a year neways? Thats your baseline hmmm; lotta Sps gonna fall short there over 3 yrs
Your really massaging the numbers here in a a bad attempt at a straw man argument-
Why bring the next 2 years up? The Og question was “Ever” – Again your grasping at straws, take the small L and go get um tomorrow – Your better than this
The Human Rain Delay
Now if you did want to knock Shoe, which you clearly do, a better route in would have been knocking his length of starts during that time period not the amount of starts which you fudged anyways-
He was coined a 5 inn pitcher back then only.
The 3rd time thru the lineup would give him great fits either due to tiring or his stuff not being as effective –
Briffle2
Again, is what I said untrue? Did he pitch the normal amount that a starter pitches in any of those healthy seasons of his? No? OK, I’m right again. I didn’t say he missed starts because he was hurt, nor did I say he wasn’t good, I said simply that he didn’t pitch the full work load of a starter. I don’t understand how such a simple and straightforward comment on my part is so hard for you to understand.
You took a leap and assumed I was talking about his health or was saying he wasn’t any good. I can see why someone like you would make an assumption like that, but you should really think before you post next time, especially if you’re going to try and be a smart ass.
Are you an Angel’s fan BTW? I wouldn’t be surprised if you are, you guys are really ignorant and clueless around here, I guess that should be expected coming from that organization, clueless and ignorant from the very top to the very bottom.
3-0 baby.
Briffle2
How many accounts do you have on here? Halosfan has been non existent since he got embarrassed by Teheran and the other joker hasn’t been around lately either. Seems like you are taking over the ignorant Angel’s chatter. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re all three and you keep creating accounts after you get verbally embarrassed.
The Human Rain Delay
Not even an Angels fan although I wouldn’t correlate fandom to intelligence but thats pretty much on par for you-
You seem very angry from all your posts and not very informed/deadly combo – You clearly showed you had no clue on Shoemakers early career…just another hot head with a keyboard –
And then the paranoia on top….dude get out the house every once in a while
God day, hope the dogs safe
filthyrich
Missed 25 starts is very untrue.
If you’re gonna get into semantics about it.
The thread is about his health, so discounting any starts made in AAA is not fair.
The reply clearly has focus on 2014-2016 range so trying to bring other years into the discussion is totally bogus.
2014 he made 25 starts.
2015 he made 25 starts.
2016 he made 28 starts.
Using a baseline of 32 per year seems fair. 2016 Jays had most of their rotation around 32.
So he “missed” 18 starts.
Guys in their option years tend to ‘miss’ starts like this.
How are you giving yourself a pat on the back over that?
Compare to Clevinger. Guy ‘missed’ 22 starts 2017-2019, but only half were due to injury.
Shoemaker only missed Sept 2016 due to health during this 2014-2016 stretch that was brought up.
Due to being hit in the head with a comebacker.
What do you think about Roy Halladay’s 2004-2006 stretch when he ‘missed’ 24 starts due to a comebacker and an appendicitis?
Enjoy your imaginary 3-0 clown trophy bro.
wild bill tetley
Filthy do you have cataracts?
Shoemaker STARTED 20 games in 2014
24 in 2015
27 in 2016
You went 0-3 in your “fact findings” of Shoemaker. Shoemaker made 1 relief appearance in 2015 and 7 in 2014. This is the part where you stop post and take a few days off after self-roasting. You are the problem as a Jays fan: EXCUSES and EXCUSES. Shoemaker can’t stay healthy. That is a fact. Put on Pirates gear if you’re going to continue making excuses and bring zero facts to the table.
The Human Rain Delay
Agh good pull with the come backer Rich…I forgot about that…that was scary as hell….
So to further Briffle, the argument was health – For 3 years the guy had no arm problems he took a line drive off the head once-
Do you know how many pitchers have 96 starts the last 3 years Brif?
Again Baseball Reference …. Im betting you dont come back with the answer to represent your “Baseline”
Hint- Your not gonna like it, probably less than vegetables
wild bill tetley
Rain Delay – does Shoemaker have an issue staying healthy? Yes or Yes? The answer is yes. Arm problems or not, you aren’t doing much good as a pitcher from the IL.
Do you know who hasn’t had 96 starts the last 3 years? Shoemaker. He’s had 31 starts since the beginning of 2017. 31. That just screams durability, doesn’t it?
Hint: walk away.
The Human Rain Delay
Billy- Hint we are ONLY talking 14-16 here …engage fully
I do like your takes though most often on every subject here and find them insightful . Keep up the good work
Briffle on the other hand brings hater-aid to every party he’s ever been to, theres enough of that in the world today to do without
The Human Rain Delay
And the timeline reads –
2014 -Shoe was promoted as a Rp. He was so good he worked his way into the starting rotation and set an Angels rookie record for wins with 15 – He finished 2nd in AL rookie of the year award to Jose Abreu…Yes Second
Started 5 games in the minors as well in April 25.2 inns
Inj in 14 – He substained a rib injury the last 10 days of the season but made it back for the postseason! Thats it for 14 ……. (10 days)
15 – Shoe broke camp as the 3 starter, he struggled was actually sent to the minors to re-tool there, made all his starts down there then came back up in Sept and made all his starts- Even helped out of the pen. Peripherals were a lot better than end numbers but it wasnt what ya wanted to see from the runner up Rookie of the years next campaign- Health was of No issue though
15 Inj- None
16- Had 27 starts till a comebacker on Sept 4 kept him from making another 3 or 4 for 30/31 total . He had to have surgery that night to stop the bleeding in his head –
Zero pitching injs 16 –
So your arguing the 10 days he missed in 14 when the Angels still made the playoffs with him available for them- And that was a rib issue
Game Set Match …… This should have been my only re-post, sorry for they others-
wild bill tetley
Noted. Understood. My apologies. Carry on.
filthyrich
wild bill, why are you discounting his AAA starts?
This was even mentioned among my post.
“The thread is about his health, so discounting any starts made in AAA is not fair.”
You are the problem with society. Quick to twist everything to your own cranky narrative. And then ignore or insult when corrected.
It is true that he can’t stay healthy now, but the discussion centered around 2014-2016 to point out he has had a healthy stretch before.
filthyrich
Also I will gladly wear my Roberto Clemente jersey every day.
What is wrong with Pirates gear?
Glad to see you tucked your tail after Rain Delay responded.
wild bill tetley
Do we count AAA stats toward major league stats? No.
You’re still holding onto the loss of your argument over Montoyo. I’m the problem? No.
I owned my part with Rain Delay. That is called accountability. You wouldn’t know what that means because you do not practice it.
Shoemaker gets hurt, arm injury or not. The end.
filthyrich
You didn’t respond to any points on Montoyo.
What is wrong with you guy?
nentwigs
With Shoemaker on the shelf, the Blue Jays will have to COBBLE together their pitching.
filthyrich
Some of these guys have what it takes, just have to search deep in their soles
bravesfan
Saw this coming. He always seems to “get hurt” when he’s struggling a tad.
Taejonguy
it would be a good time to see if 28 year old Julian Merryweather is really as good as his first few appearances. He was traded in the Donaldson deal and it is time to see what he has got…
Baseballgeek
Makes sense why shoemaker was Pulled out early in his start . But Apparently the wife was upset he was pulled out early after 75 pitches….
