The Astros have placed third baseman Alex Bregman on the 10-day injured list due to a strained right hamstring, manager Dusty Baker announced to reporters Thursday (Twitter link via Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle). Bregman is traveling home to Houston to undergo an MRI and determine the severity of the injury. Left-hander Cionel Perez has been recalled from the Astros’ alternate training site to take Bregman’s spot on the roster.
Injuries continue to mount at an alarming rate for the Astros, who this week learned that Yordan Alvarez will require season-ending knee surgery. Houston has also received just one start from Justin Verlander in 2020, while closer Roberto Osuna is staring down a potential Tommy John surgery (though he’ll first attempt to rehab). Brad Peacock and Jose Urquidy, expected to be key members of the bullpen and rotation, respectively, have not thrown a pitch this year. Michael Brantley, meanwhile, has been on the IL for nearly a week and was sidelined prior to that due to a quadriceps strain. George Springer has missed time due to a wrist strain but is playing through it rather than going on the IL.
With Bregman out, the ’Stros will very likely turn third base over to young Abraham Toro. A well-regarded 23-year-old, Toro hasn’t hit much in limited Major League time yet, but he obliterated Double-A pitching (.306/.393/.513 in 435 PAs) and Triple-A pitching (.424/.506/.606 in 79 PAs) alike in 2019.
Houston’s DH situation is a bit more tenuous. Kyle Tucker is manning left field on a regular basis in the absence of Brantley. Alvarez is out for the season, and Toro could see regular reps at third for at least the immediate future. That’ll push one of Myles Straw, Jack Mayfield or rookie Taylor Jones into the lineup with regularity.

honestly, genuine curiosity, but why specifically do people dislike Bregman the most of the Astros? he had the better numbers? his face? i understand not liking any of them but i feel picking ones you like less just doesnt make sense if were assuming all of them cheated.
oaklandfan22
I think people hate Altuve the most
toooldtocare
Honest curious question for you OaklandFan22, do you have the same disdain for the Canseco / McGuire years in Oakland.
jjd002
Of course he doesn’t. His reply will probably be lots of people were doing it. That works with the cheering scandal. MLB is doing the same thing they did in that era. Eventually the other teams will get busted.
arc89
Isn’t that the what about excuse. Why it is not the same is easy to detail. #1 steroids were not illegal when they played in Oakland. Steroids were legal under MLB rules in the 80s. #2 A’s players were not the only ones using steroids more than half of the players were using them and many of the pitchers too. So there was not just one team having a big advantage over other teams. There were several Astro player that used steroids too at the time. So you just used the what about excuse. Let’s not forget in the 60s and 70s many players were on speed which was a big problem in baseball. It was known to be in the water during day games to wake players up.
phillyoakman
Steroids make you bigger not a fortune teller. Can you imagine of these players were juicing and being told what pitch to expect?
phillyoakman
And I don’t disagree, a scandal is still a scandal. The tipping of the pitches just gets under my skin bc it takes the fun out of the game. But same could be said for roids and how far a ball can go.
toooldtocare
I didn’t use the what about excuse. You just assumed that. I’ve been watching baseball since the 1950’s, and having speed in the water is news to me. Can you give me some article that shows that definitively? I’m very interested in reading about that, if indeed it is factual.
texasfury93
Greinke frequently tells hitters what pitch is coming. They still don’t hit it.
92jays
Well said
arc89
Does he always throw that pitch? No He did it the other day to a rookie but only once in about 100 pitches that day. Everyone knew Greg Maddox was going to be around the plate and rarely walk anyone but still they couldn’t hit him.
arc89
there are a few articles about it. team chemistry: the history of drugs and alcohol in baseball has alot on the greenies normally called back in the 60s.. Cocaine was big in the early 80s in baseball too. A couple teams had the cocaine scandal. Put amphetamines in baseball and you can read up on it.
DarkSide830
Yankes fans maybe, but ive seen more Bregman hate on this site.

His smugness rubs people the wrong way, especially when it comes at the expense of cheating, his lack of any sort of remorse for said cheating…shall I go on?
Marvel's MAGA Man
Yes please do go on.

You know what he means its like when a robber is caught on video stealing from the store and he still says it wasn’t me a twin that looks like me. Cue his mom that says he is a good Christian boy that would never do any harm. That is Altuve and and his fans that will not admit he cheated.
johnnydubz
Arc89 so Altuve will get to own a team because Arod cheated and lied but somehow people are hoping he gets to own the Mets. I mean people are crying racism if he doesn’t get it just ask Bradley Beal. Somehow putting in the highest bid doesn’t matter
Orel Saxhiser
People who complain about people crying racism tend to be…well, you know.
arc89
Arod did cheat. i don’t feel that he should go to the HOF. I don’t make excuses for players but that is what people are doing about Bergman.
DarkSide830
why does this apply to him more then? no one here seemed happy with the “appologies,” and its not like every player on the team from the period in question did so either.
Strunk Flugget
Bregman’s smugness is the biggest reason in my book. Altuve lacks that.
phillyoakman
I believe because he was one of the main influencers to the scandal. I may be wrong.
lowtalker1
I like all the Astros players… they beat down the doyuers in the World Series
VonPurpleHayes
The post-scandal PR done by Bregman was horrendous. Can’t speak for everyone, but how he handled the situation made matters much worse. Anyone who expressed an ounce of remorse seemed to be forgiven for the most part. Bregman made it seem like people were crazy for thinking they did anything wrong.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
For me, it’s his attitude of no one is allowed to bring up the issue. Like, he literally fired his agent because he worked for a company who represents someone who was going to make a documentary on the sign stealing scandal. Like, “Bro, you got caught. Sit the eff down.”
WarrenSpahn
Hinch is the biggest villain to me. He knew what was going on and chose to do nothing. He was the MANAGER, and consciously decided cheating was acceptable, game after game after game. Then he had the nerve to belittle and attack the media for asking questions. Good effing riddance…
trendysayings
I don’t like the Astros
Lloyd Emerson
Crawl into a garbage can with your security blanket and a box of cookies, Alex Bregman.
FanSince1970
I just got censored for saying this but some fans dislike Bregman because of his background/religion. He’s an overachiever and is better at baseball and smarter than most of the haters. It is what it is.
Marvel's MAGA Man
Tim Tebow kneels for prayer everybody gets upset and tells him to stand. Nobody questions why him being a bad QB means he’s out of the league.
Colin Kaepernick kneels and everybody gets upset at people telling him to stand. Everybody questions why him being a bad QB means he’s out of the league.
dumbcommentresponder
Except Tebow got several jobs after he kneeled to pray while Kaepernick was completely blackballed despite the fact that Kaepernick would have been an ok backup while Tebow is barely good enough to be a 3rd string QB. You conveniently omitted that part because that doesn’t fit your “Christian persecution complex.”
Marvel's MAGA Man
“several”
Real stretch there. He signed a 2 month contract with the Patriots in 2013 June 2013- August 2013
Signed a 5 month contract with the Eagles in April 2015 and released September 2015.
Has been out of football since then.
I also didn’t mention Kaepernicl had a job lined up with the Ravens before his GF decided to attack Ray Lewis and the owner. Funny you left that part out.
Orel Saxhiser
Kaepernick took a knee in the name of social justice and to protest racial profiling by police officers. Funny how YOU left that out. Why do you MAGA folks disapprove of true equality in America? What are you so afraid of? Be specific.
wild bill tetley
….and Miami fans didn’t want Kaepernick for wearing the t-shirt with Castro, Che and company (which kinda destroys his whole movement, technically).
Marvel's MAGA Man
Tebow was traded to the Jets.
Had Kaepernick accepted a paycut he would have been traded to the Broncos.
Kaepernick had “several” chances himself to prove he belonged in the NFL.
Some players just can’t get out of their own way.
dumbcommentresponder
Either way, Tebow played his way out of a job, especially with the Jets, so saying it was even comparable to Kaepernick is just wrong.
Orel Saxhiser
MAGA Man conveniently ignores a movement that seeks equal treatment for all Americans. No surprise that he refuses to explain himself.
Marvel's MAGA Man
Thanks captain obvious. I’m sure 99% of people know why Kaepernick kneeled. I dont need to remind people why he kneeled.
I do enjoy the hypocrisy and different reactions people have for players kneeling for what they believe in.
Tim Tebow kneels for what he believes in he’s not allowed to.
Kaepernick kneels for what he believes in let him.
Can’t have it both ways.
Marvel's MAGA Man
Kaepernick played himself out of a job. Which is why one of the biggest busts in recent rememory, Blaine Gabbert, replaced him as the starting QB for the 49ers.
Marvel's MAGA Man
You’re literally having a meltdown and throwing a tantrum because I didn’t explicitly mention something majority of people have a general understanding of….over a comment I made about people’s reaction to them kneeling, not critiquing why they were kneeling . Get a grip.
dumbcommentresponder
The majority of people did not care when Tebow kneeled. No one threatened to boycott the NFL when Tebow kneeled. The same cannot be said for Kaepernick. These two situations are not similar and saying “everybody” got upset with Tebow is ridiculous. It just sounds like a Christian persecution complex
dumbcommentresponder
Kaepernick is a bit of an idiot, granted. That still does not make these situations comparable, especially because OP is exaggerating the amount of people who actually gave a damn that Tebow kneeled.
arc89
Who got upset about Teabow kneeling for prayer? Nobody got upset about it. That was another lame excuse to play the victim card. Teabow was never a good passer but was a great runner. He refused to switch positions to RB is why he couldn’t get a job. Did you ever watch him throw? His arm was very weak. Kapernack was the opposite a great arm but over threw to much. So can you post who got upset over teabow kneeling. Exact names with facts.not something some talking head said on political radio/tv
Marvel's MAGA Man
*https://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/08/sports/football/in-tebow-debate-a-clash-of-faith-and-football.html*
Literally a whole NYT article about the controversy over Tebow and his religion.
But sure, didn’t happen.
Lot of people got upset online from him kneeling for religious reasons.
Marvel's MAGA Man
One columnist in Denver called Tebow the worst quarterback in football. Another columnist in Canada labeled Tebow the “Kim Kardashian of sports,” for the intense reaction he elicited. Online, the torrent of mockery and criticism has been fierce. Blog posts included “God explains why he let Tim Tebow fail” and Twitter exploded in hateful vitriol, to which the Sports Illustrated writer Joe Posnanski mused: “I believe Tim Tebow isn’t an N.F.L. starter and I want him to prove me wrong because I believe he’s a great guy. Is that allowed?”
In sheer volume and intensity, the comments section on an ESPN article best captured the storm known as Tebow mania. They ranged from critical to crude under the theme “X is > Tebow,” with X being “eating your kids” among the options, as moderators struggled to delete the escalating venom.
Marvel's MAGA Man
This is straight from a NYT article titled
“In Tebow Debte, a clash of faith and football”
In sheer volume and intensity, the comments section on an ESPN article best captured the storm known as Tebow mania. They ranged from critical to crude under the theme “x is > than Tebow” with X being “eating your kids” among the options, as moderators struggled to delete the escalating venom.
Google is free you know. Can easily look up articles about how people reacted to Tebow, him kneeling, and his outspoken views on Christianity.
Aside from Denver fans and people of similar faith, they didn’t take too kindly to his demonstrations like kneeling and putting Bible passages under his eyes.
Hey wait….I’ve seen this one before.
arc89
Come on now you know that online there are millions of trolls that bash everyone for anything. That is nothing compared to how Kap was treated. Kap got 100s of death threats from red caps. He got more hate than anyone in sports ever. Teabow got just a very tiny fraction of hate from some trolls. Even a President showed his hate and anger to use Kap for votes. So if you are going to use a comment section just read any news comment section and all you see is hate. Even here people have hate if you don’t praise a player or team.
bradcarlz
Altuve is getting the most hate because he is the one struggling the worst in 2020 with an average below 200. Coincidence or not people are gonna find that suspicious because it’s hard for a guy who got hits nonstop for the past couple years to fall off this hard(unless you’re Chris Davis).
SabermetricsForLife
I feel that anyone who thinks Altuve was cheating isn’t a real fan of baseball and just a fair weather fan. A real fan would actually care to look at Altuve’s body of work over his career and see he has been an above average player from the beginning. Starting with his first full year (2012) he has hit above .290 (sans 2013 at .283) every year and has had 200 or more hits in 4 of his 8 years with those years being 2014 – 2017. He was a solid player long before the Astros were good or implementing illegal practices. It was also proven that during 2017 he did not participate in the cheating and would get angry when the “trash can banger” would try to signal him.
McGurk
I think we have covered this before. Altuve, if we take him and Trashtro’s at their words*, still benefited by pitcher 1)fatigue (pitcher having to make more pitches to players that were cheating). 2) pitchers questioning themselves/overpitching when you are known for a legendary curvebal and none of the hitters even sneeze at it maybe you got to a third, less effective pitch, or you overthrow and mess up mechanics. 3)knocking pitchers out of the game earlier and getting into a teams bullpen 4) added pressure/leverage of having players who did cheat on base/taking away shift options. I’m sure there are more.
92jays
Also how many rbis did altuve get by having guys on base thanks to the trashcAns
Orel Saxhiser
Altuve stole an MVP award.
SabermetricsForLife
Give this statistics article a read before you start making statement based on zero facts.
google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/business/story/20…
arc89
Fact is he was cheating. Facts is we don’t know when he cheated. what days off the trash can guy had off. What days the other team signs were not stolen. Fact is he did cheat. He was cheating for 3 years. I remember the team I cheer for came into Houston and was swept in a 4 game series. The announcer a former player said on the air its like they knew what pitches were coming. After the series they notified MLB when they noticed something was wrong. MLB said nothing was wrong.
So would Astros keep cheating up 5 or 6 runs? Probably not if the game was in the bag. Some of the players probably didn’t cheat. That is the problem stats can’t tell what was happening.if it was only happening with selective hitters and on only some days.
McGurk
Good points. Stats are great and certainly relevant but we have to remember that they are limited to the Data collected. It’s not as easy as saying, “well their OPS dropped when they wrongfully predicted a fastball” 1) it assumes that there where only two options 1 for fastball and 2 for breaking all, but what about null?
WarrenSpahn
Aaron Judge has every right to be bitter, just as Matt Kemp does for cheater Braun stealing his MVP in 2011…
Sideline Redwine
What they did was unacceptable, but it did not guarantee success. Anyone see Greinke give away his pitches over his last couple starts? Do you think this is a coincidence? Even if you know what is coming, it does not guarantee success. It can help, but everyone needs to relax and realize maybe it isn’t as easy as simply knowing what pitch is coming…
FWIW, I am no fan of the Astros.
McGurk
Greinke gave away location and pitch? Wonder if it makes a difference if he knew that the batters knew.
SabermetricsForLife
He told everyone on the field what he was going to throw and the batter still couldn’t do anything with it. Just bc you know what’s coming doesn’t guarantee success. The batter still has to have the skill to do something with it.
McGurk
So one sample is enough to prove/disprove your point?
Kirk Gibson knew eckersley was throwing him the back door slider and his hobbled butt was able to plant that ball in the seats.
Why do players even try to guess the pitch/location if it didn’t make a difference? You hear it all the time “it looks like he is sitting on the fastball”, “he is looking for a pitch in his sector” etc…
astrosfansince1974
Location wasn’t part of the trash-can scheme. Stop obfuscating the discussion with straw men
McGurk
News to me. Doesn’t seem logical to go thru all that trouble to get that data and not use it. Funny how trashtros fans bristle when we make obviously logical inferences on their scheme (granted the report didn’t mention it) but are all too happy to infer that it’s “no big deal because everyone else does it” despite the lack of evidence.
SabermetricsForLife
Take a look at that article. The negative impact was bigger than the positive impact. I am an Astros fan and i am disgusted at what they did. What irritates me is people not using data to attack, but using emotion and fake information.
google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/business/story/20…
McGurk
Then there is this….
blogs.fangraphs.com/the-hypothetical-value-of-an-i…
blogs.fangraphs.com/how-much-did-the-astros-really…
Of course now we know more than back then so we know that the trashtros did in fact use some variation of their scheme on the road, to explain some of those earlier discrepancies, which actually makes more sense that they would have been better on the road if they successfully cheated. Teams expect some sort shenanigan’s away, they typically don’t expect that extensive of a scheme on their home turf.
SabermetricsForLife
It was actually proved (with quantifiable data) that the cheating actually hurt the Astros more than it helped them. In my opinion the Astros were idiots for doing this because they had the talent enough to win in 2017. Due to stupidity they forever tainted a year that could have happened without the scandal.
Marvel's MAGA Man
What data?

right on. if it had such an effect then why did they not even make the WS in 2018? why didn’t they win more regular season games then the Dodgers? not going to say there was no effect, but just consider the numbers. no one was garbage before the cans and then suddenly exploded. Altuve’s game may have gone to another level but he was a perrenial all star probably before that intern was on FO radars. Bregman wasnt some scrub prospect who suddenly came out of nowhere.
KirkRueter
Nice.

Clown fans will always act like this. You will hate on the other teams player for reasons you over exaggerate until that player signs a free agent deal with your team, then you will love them. How many of you hate Marwin Gonzalez, Jake Marisnick or Tony Kemp right now? The Astros are outscoring every team in the league in “runs per game“ this year when it is obvious they are now not stealing signs. An argument could be made that the sign stealing actually hurt them. They may be better offensively now.
DiehardFriarsFan
