9:18am: The Phillies are still planning to travel to New York to play at Yankee Stadium tomorrow, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia tweets. For the time being, the club will undergo a second round of testing today, The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reports on Twitter.
9:07am: The results that have come back have not included any new positive tests within the Philadelphia organization, Sherman tweets.
8:59am: Some Phillies test results are delayed, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic hears (Twitter link).
8:56am: Just like yesterday, today’s scheduled contest between the Phillies and Yankees has been scratched, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter). The Philadelphia organization was sidelined after a weekend series against a Marlins team with at least 11 cases of COVID-19.
Unlike yesterday’s decision, this one was expected to come with the benefit of testing results. Those aren’t yet known, but it doesn’t seem promising that the game was scrapped after the lab work came back. It would be preferable, though hardly ideal in its own right, if testing delays were to blame.
This is a developing story …
DarkSide830
yeah probably just best to shuffle this series to the end of the year and focus on the next one right now
Al Hirschen
They do know that there’s a four day incubation period for this virus
davidk1979
No they don’t
DarkSide830
which makes the decision perfect given the length of the series. maybe the negatives over two days will be fine, but this affords a tad more protection that couldn’t hurt if those games can be fit in. obviously the league doesnt want the season going on too long but maybe they are willing to stretch their timeframe with football in a pickle and a clear need.
Hawktattoo
14 days not 4
Old User Name
@DarkSide.. With trying to cram 60 games into 66 days, it won’t take much more to not be able to make those games up. And this doesn’t include the inevitable rain out days.
DarkSide830
gotta do what you gotta do. they want to get the games in when they want to, but their hands may be forced.
NY_Yankee
I wonder if this is the “Beginning of the end” of the Season?
Josh5890
I have a feeling we are going to see a bunch of double headers this season
Lloyd Emerson
I have a feeling we’re about halfway through this very abbreviated attempt at a season.
timpa
The make or break for this season is whether or not in a few days we’re talking about ANY positive cases from the Phillies.
We’ve already seen a failure in the argument that ‘daily testing’ can catch infected players before they become contagious because if that was true then the Marlins would have had it spread through their team because the daily testing would have caught a positive player and pulled him away from the team before he was contagious.
Now we’ll see whether an opponent can whether the storm and come away without infections spread to them from playing against infected players.
DarkSide830
i heard an epidemiologist saying that the Phillies were an important test study in the likelyhood of transmission between oppsoing teams. if it’s clear there was no transmission between the teams, the test bodes well for the completion of the season as long as protocols are adhered to. from what im hearing from members of the Phillies via the media, the Marlins werent following protocols all that well and the Phillies adapted with a bit more mask usage throughout the series, so if these protocols are followed and the tests show well then its possible this storm can not only be weathered but may be kept from replicating itself within other teams.
tigerdoc616
Well said.
SashaBanksFan
I sure hope so. I still wish mask usage would be required of everyone even players on the field. It doesn’t seem that bad to wear during the game. Just one extra step that hopefully protects more players, coaches, umps, etc. don’t they do that in Korea? Their league seems to have progressed fine if I’m not mistaken.
DarkSide830
actually i dont remember masks from the KBO broadcasts i saw. i agree though. I think the only reason it wasnt done was probably because the PA pushed for a mere recommendation, but i can see Clark coming out and re-emphasizing the need at the very least.
Gigorilla
Will be interesting to find out if the Phillies are in quarantine today/tomorrow given the possible incubation time.
MLB has not really been clear on the protocols.
DarkSide830
im sure the team has mandated self-quarantining, which should be easier to maintain with no game action to take part in today.
oldmansteve
I think the reason they haven’t been clear is they don’t have a definite set of protocols. Too many unknown variables with the virus to lock into anything. I don’t blame them, though. There really isn’t another way to do it other than to not do it.
DarkSide830
and to be fair, just because we dont know them doesn’t mean they dont exist. this about the players here, they’re the ones who need to know the protocols more than anything else.
fair-critic
Season is cooked, cancel it so the players not from FL & TX can stay healthy
bobtillman
On well, all the Red Sox pitching staff is healthy.
notagain27
Yankee organization has always been a step ahead of the game covering behind the scenes issues. They were one of the first teams to provide their own security on the road. Meals in visiting clubhouses; and now, something I think is ingenious, bringing their own visiting clubhouse staff to keep the “working environment” clean on the road. The Yankee organization once again is setting behind the scenes standards.

2020 is close to being a done deal. The final of all finals could come when the Phillies tests come back. I was so looking forward to the return of baseball activities but now I couldn’t care less. Keep everyone safe and shut it down. What a complete train wreck.
99 Captain Judge
Maybe the the 4 games get played at Yankee Stadium to play it safe. The Yanks could always be the visitor for 2 of those games. Even though it does give them a huge advantage. Better to play then not play
VonPurpleHayes
The Yankees requested that, but that’s not fair either. As of now, there’s no reason to believe the Marlins were infected in Philly. So where they play doesn’t matter as much as who’s infected.
DarkSide830
they should just move up two of their O’s games to be played on the 29th and 30th.
Phanatic 2022
With zero fans how Huge is the advantage?
HartnellDown
I’m hearing on 94WIP that four more Marlins players tested positive since yesterday. No word on Phillies players
99 Captain Judge
Really curious in regards to the Phillie players. Hopefully their all ok
HartnellDown
Jim Salisbury saying no Phillies have tested positive thus far
DarkSide830
that’s in the other article
Vizionaire
espn reports this morning that new tests revealed 4 more players infected.
Outfield Fly
Obviously health and wellbeing come first, but let’s have the Yankees and Orioles play each other now rather that sit around doing nothing. Get more games in so that other games can be made up.
99 Captain Judge
Yes, Gleyber really wants to play against the Orioles. Not sure why?
Col_chestbridge
There really should be no reason that an infected person from one team spreads it to another team. Exception maybe if it’s a catcher (which, might have been the start of this as it was the Braves’ catchers that tested positive that might have given it to the Marlins). You’re not in close contact with those players from other teams, and it’s outdoors so it shouldn’t “linger” in the air. If you’re not sharing tunnels or locker rooms, there should be very little intra-team transmission. The only exception is how close the batters are to catchers.
If that holds true and the Phillies come out of this without infections… it bodes well for the season continuing. The Marlins… they probably shouldn’t play for another week.
oldmansteve
Every hitter stands next to the catcher. Any baserunner is next to the infielder. They are throwing around a ball that both teams touch. There are several ways to potentially spread the virus.
DarkSide830
the basepath stuff is probably mostly limited to 1B to be fair, 2nd baseman and 3rd baseman dont usually play on the bag. the ball is a curious note though. i wonder if they tested transmission with a ball, because its possible that the material the ball is made of absorbs the virus. soft surfaces are poor transmitters of the virus from what ive heard.
Briffle2
With how often they change balls. I seriously doubt there would be any transmission.
DarkSide830
that’s true, i forgot about that part
Briffle2
At least some good news that the Phillies aren’t testing positive, hopefully it stays that way. Best case scenario, it’s just an outbreak within the Marlins and they have to suck it up for a couple weeks or a month and play backup players.
DarkSide830
bingo. that’s why they have 30 reserve guys. also they could bring a few FA’s and waiver guys in. sucks, but its best for 29/30 of the league at worst.
VonPurpleHayes
I mean this is the right move of course, but it’s also a bit of a mess. We got 4 teams that are essentially getting ice cold right now. And the hitters will have to relearn their timing…etc. In my mind, 4 teams not able to play for a week is enough to cancel the season.
I’m not criticizing the postponement of the game. I just have second thoughts on the season.
yankeefan363
All those fan cut outs in the stands are going to be bored
LordD99
The most important aspect is hopeful all the players and staff will be ok. The recovery rate is very high but we do know that a certain small percentage gets hit hard, and it’s not always people with underlying health conditions.
hogansgoat
Hey Girardi and Ron Washington and that Asian guy on the Rays; a mask is not a chin guard and doesn’t help anybody if it doesn’t cover your mouth and nose.
mikemcsaudi
Now can all of the clowns start wearing masks in the dugout and at the plate? Idiots!!!
Ducky Buckin Fent
Gosh, Mike.
You sure seem pretty angry.
dave frost nhlpa
Why are the Yankees not playing the Orioles?
adultsagainstthedh
MLB developed the protocol with the aid of the CDC and other authorities. When I saw JiMan Choi with the “chin guard” he was hitting. If they do it properly Girardi and Washington are only briefly–a minute at most–within social distance of the player they’re talking to. Time of contact is an important factor in transmision.
And the catcher contact, amnd full concentaration for the hitter on a 95mph fastball, are probably more or less unavoidable so bets are off there.
Are the personnel being jerks–yes, some. The Red Sox broadcasters guessed last night that things will improve after what’s happened to the Marlins.
DarkSide830
it’s a wake up call to be sure. im sure if the league can get through this then it will help things down the line.
Louiebeans
Brett Gardner 0-7 and climbing glad this seasons a bust and only 60 games. Hopefully they don’t bring this garbage back in 2021. only 58 to go
