Just one start into his tenure with the Reds, southpaw Wade Miley is headed to the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Miley joins righty Anthony DeSclafani (strained teres major) as the second member of the Reds’ rotation to go on the IL since last week.
The 33-year-old Miley, who put forth a solid 2019 effort as a member of the Astros, was one of the Reds’ many notable offseason pickups. The Reds signed him to a two-year, $15MM contract in free agency, but his Cincinnati stint has gotten off to an inauspicious start in the early going. The Cubs tuned up Miley for six runs (five earned) on four hits over 1 2/3 innings in his 2020 debut Monday. In fairness to Miley, though, manager David Bell revealed he “didn’t feel 100 percent and didn’t feel great” in that game. Now, the Reds are hopeful that Miley will return in short order.
Without Miley and DeSclafani, who Fay notes is doing better, the Reds will keep Tyler Mahle in their rotation behind Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray and Trevor Bauer. Castillo, Gray and Bauer have been excellent thus far, but the playoff-hopeful Reds have only mustered a 2-4 start.
Tejay Time
Antone will remain in the bullpen, as he should. DeSclafani and Mahle will be in the rotation, following the Big 3.
isnt Desclafani still on the IL?
Should be Jose De Leon filling the hole. He performed well and has the reputation.
Blessing in disguise. That first game was brutal. I don’t think he has it anymore. Tops out at 88, hardly any speed difference on his various pitches, etc… with the rainout today, we can skip his spot in the rotation. Mahle and Desclafini if he can get back soon is better anyways…
Miley’s velo typically sits at 88-92. You can see it for yourself here;

It seems a little quick to write him off based on 1.2 innings of work when he was fine last year. His 88 velo is on the low end for himself but that could simply be his lack of comfort.
Miley was destroyed by hitters 2nd half of last year and now this. Sure he can rebound, but a guy with this kind of trajectory makes it at least easier to write off or make suppositions.
He was actually good until the middle of August
His ERA was 3.06 starting September after being as low as 2.99. He ended up at 3.98 after a disastrous September
Miley is the 5th starter. When he’s healthy he will get plenty of starts or atleast innings. He’s a prime candidate for a relief starter. Him and mahle would make a great pair to go 3 innings each. Slow throwing lefty and a righty who can get it into high 90s.
I always thought Miley’s best pitch was his change-up? Maybe those were the days he was hitting 94 on the radar gun with his fastball
Another hiden covid case. MLB is hiding all these minor injurie as covid cases.
uh, any proof of that?
He swallowed the proof in the Kool-Aid he drank.
You’re hiding your brain damage.
Sigh..Why did you come to this conclusion? I would just love to be tortured by going through a step-by-step process of how you came to your conclusion.
If a very average MLB pitcher doesn’t feel well before the game, why TF do you run him out there? Bell is an idiot.
Because you sometimes have very good athletic performances when you’re not feeling 100%.
Because he didn’t tell his manager? I dunno
It’s still early in season and Miley is a veteran pitcher, he doesn’t have dominant stuff But his last year record would say otherwise, if he gets some run support he could hang around and improve, we have pitching coaches and a group of pitching gurus who will turn him into a productive number 5 guy
Disco is the projected starter to replacing Miley on the Reds website. Antone will be on 4 days rest, and could fill in if necessary
One of the major problems with the Reds this year is the manager, David Bell. He is just not a good manager for a contender. He is not doing well with a good ball club. They went out and got the players, but do not have the right manager. He made multiple bad choices tonight that cost them a very winnable game. The manager does matter. Sparky Anderson would have made the calls tonight to help win this game. I think the Bell’s have to much influence on this organization.
The Reds lose 9 to 6. David Bell just could not see that his starting pitcher did not have it today. He kept him in until the other team scored nine runs in two innings. I am done with this team for awhile. It is not the players. It is the manager that is the main problem. He is a nice guy, but one of the worst managers I have ever seen.
