The Red Sox announced they have selected right-hander Zack Godley to their 40-man and active rosters. Fellow right-hander Dylan Covey has been optioned to their minor league training site to clear active roster space. Their 40-man roster now sits at 39 players.
Boston signed Godley to a minor-league deal shortly after he was released by the Tigers at the outset of Summer Camp. Godley didn’t immediately command a 40-man roster spot, but it always seemed likely he’d get a look on an uncertain pitching staff. The 30-year-old turned in a pair of productive seasons as a starter with the 2017-18 Diamondbacks. Combined, he tossed 333.1 innings of 4.10 ERA ball with a solid combination of strikeouts (24.7%), walks (9.4%) and groundballs (51.6%).
The wheels fell off completely in 2019. Between Arizona and Toronto, Godley turned in a 5.97 ERA in 33 appearances (9 starts) with dramatic declines in his strikeouts and grounders. Along the way, Godley’s lost some velocity on both his cutter and sinker. Given his somewhat recent respectable track record, though, it’s easy to see why the Red Sox are willing to give him another look. Their current top four starters- Nathan Eovaldi, Martín Pérez, Ryan Weber and Matt Hall– hardly inspire a ton of confidence.
Covey, too, is a recent addition to the pitching staff, having been acquired from the Rays on Tuesday. The three-year White Sox starter threw two innings in relief in yesterday’s loss to the Orioles.

What a shocking development.

Have a feeling the Sox will be making a roster move with some pitcher multiple times per week. Half a dozen of the pitchers they have on the 40 man roster currently have no business on any MLB roster.
This is one lousy pitching staff currently, excepting Eovaldi, Workman, Barnes, Taylor and perhaps Walden.

Yeah but Josh Bard

Josh bard is a former. Catcher that was brought in to catch for Wakefield and then was so bad, was traded back to the Padres to bring back doug mirabelli right before one of Wakefield’s starts. Mirabelli got a police escort to fenway in order to make it to the stadium in time for first pitch

That was an incredible sequence of events back then. I remember it well but you recounted it perfectly. That was a crazy time. Thanks for the memory.

Minus Barnes and I’m with you.

Barnes is a guy that has never been that great but has always been okay. But because he has a live fastball snd was a decent prospect, people like to think hes actually really great
looiebelongsinthehall
Barnes to me is Daniel Bard 2.0 as I’ve been waiting for a Bard like meltdown from Barnes. That said p, congrats to Daniel for coming back at age 35 and getting the W yesterday for Colorado.

Barnes needs to stop walking guys. So tired of it.

eovaldi had 2 good months of his career. Luckily they came in a WS push for Boston

I like weber to be honest. He doesn’t throw hard and relies on command. I’d rather take my chances with a command artist than someone that doesn’t know where the pitch is going
Randy Red Sox
Do you still like Weber after he just got pounded by the mighty Orioles?

Going to take an act of God-ly to save this season for the Red Sox

How do writers not know how to use the word “too?” It should absolutely be “Covey is a new addition to the pitching staff too”

What’s with the Grammar Nazi!?! Just enjoy baseball. For what it’s worth, I’ve see “too” included early in a sentence like that many times before.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
It is grammatically correct, just a matter of preference.

Why wasn’t this done from the beginning?

On a side note, Dylan Covey’s major league numbers are atrocious.

This is a sad development. Godley is a decent enough waiver claim for depth midseason for a team out of contention. But to start the season, for the Sox…Dylan Covey and Zack Godley are deck chairs being rearranged as the team waits to call up the iceberg.

What part of this is sad?

The fact that our rotation is filled with two back end starters in our front and minor leaguers.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
It’s a tax reset year. This is done on purpose. Don’t worry, the sun will shine again for this team.

I totally get that, and am even okay with it. However to not have 5 major League caliber SP’s is still really inexcusable. Even if they went out and got 2/3 veteran “innings-eater” types that would post ERAs of 4.50 that would’ve been okay. But instead they have literally decided to go with Ryan Webber (who had a 5+ ERA last year) and then NO ONE for #4/5 (maybe Godley now?) — is just really inexplicable. Like I’m totally okay with this being a “reset/rebuild/retool” whatever you want to call it season. But they should have at least done the bare minimum of having a legitimate ML-caliber rotation… again even if we were just talking veteran 4.50+ ERA guys… they don’t even have that.
Jeff Zanghi
The Red Sox lack of ML-caliber SPs is really inexcusable. I’m even okay with calling this/admitting its a ‘rebuilding year’ but even so… having only one legitimate ML-quality SP is really inexcusable (Eovaldi btw is the “one” I’m counting). Like okay E-Rod having Covid was out of their control… but still they’ve known for months now that Sale was out for the year and yet they stood Pat with Martin Perez (who was awful last year… yet somehow was given $5.5M) Ryan Webber, and then literally no one else is really inexcusable. I’ve been supportive of Chaim Bloom and have/had high hopes for his ability to use the low-bugdet ideologies of the Rays with the bigger payroll of the Red Sox… but not having 5 competent starting pitchers is really a horrible look to start the season. They should have AT LEAST brought in a veteran “innings-eater” or two as ‘insurance’ for if the injuries that have occurred, occurred and not doing so is really bad. Who knows maybe they’ll get lucky with Godley or one of their other recent acquisitions. But personally I just feel like leaving basically their entire rotation up in the air to start the season was a really inexcusable oversight regardless of how little $ they had to spend And still stay under the luxury tax. If it meant trading Bradley Jr. or some other offensive player to have enough room to fill a competent rotation, then they should have done so… because starting Ryan Webber in game 3 of the season is just a pathetic move.

Glad to see Covey optioned; he is just awful. Godly should be able to provide some decent innings for them, given the shape of their pitching staff right now. Time to bring Brian Johnson up too. Soft tossing lefties are much more effective than soft tossing righties (like Weber). I do like Weber’s attitude but he needs to be near perfect to be effective. That happens in about 1 of every 5 starts from him.

pitching staff is hot garbage
