Red Sox Claim Stephen Gonsalves

By Mark Polishuk | July 25, 2020 at 5:24pm CDT

The Red Sox claimed left-hander Stephen Gonsalves off waivers from the Mets, as per a team press release.  Gonsalves has been optioned to Boston’s minor league training site.

The Mets designated Gonsalves for assignment earlier this week, ending the 26-year-old’s tenure in New York without so much as a big league pitch after Gonsalves was claimed off waivers from the Twins last November.  Gonsalves’ lone taste of MLB action came with Minnesota in 2018, as he posted a 6.57 ERA over 24 2/3 innings (starting four of seven games).

Originally drafted by the Twins as a fourth-round pick in 2013, Gonsalves has a impressive 2.50 ERA, 2.67 K/BB rate, and 9.6 K/9 over 612 career minor league IP, though much of that success came at the lower levels.  Walks were a bit more of an issue for Gonsalves at the Triple-A level, with a 4.9 BB/9 over his 125 frames at the highest rung on the minor league ladder, though he still managed a 3.46 ERA at Triple-A Rochester.

Gonsalves will now join a Red Sox club that is in need of any sort of pitching help, so another call to the majors might not be too far away.  Darwinzon Hernandez and Josh Taylor are both recovering from positive COVID-19 tests, however, so the Sox will be getting southpaw bullpen reinforcements back in hopefully short order.  With Gonsalves’ addition, Boston has now maxed out its player pool at 60 men, and has 38 spots filled on its 40-man roster.

Figured he’d be claimed but sad to see him go. He’s a nice depth piece for any team but I guess it doesn’t really matter considering there are plenty of pitchers like him.

Honestly may as well just stick him straight into the rotation to see what he’s got. He’s got more upside than most of their options who are currently available.

I’d take him over Martin Perez immediately

Agreed. Bloom may have found a diamond in the rough, thats what we need to survive this season.

The rotation is really sad after Nate. It’s going to be a long short season.

Even Eovaldi isn’t top notch. He pitched one game against the Orioles… has a career ERA in the 4.00s and not sure what to expect with his injury history.

Gonslaves could be a LOOGY for them.

Hard to be a LOOGY when you have to pitch to 3 batters.

Mets should have kept him. Diaz is not a closer..

Gonsalves wouldn’t help fix Diaz’s issues

No he can close or put familia back in closer role with bettances and hes an 8th inning guy, anybody other than diaz will suffice.. .this trade will go down as the worst even if the other guys that went to Seattle never make the majors

Only there really aren’t many chances to use loogys any more. As a guy has to face 3 batters or end an inning

At one time this guy was a big time prospect in the twins system. Good luck young man!

He was actually pretty good in the upper levels of the minors as well with ERA’s sub 3.50. I wish the writers on this Website would do research instead of speaking out of there behinds. I wish I could get a job here I know I can put in a little more research and write a much better quality of an article even if it is a minor transaction such as this. This is not written well at all. I don’t want your job but I do feel like I can write as well as the writers at Trade Rumors. Somebody let me know who to get in contact with I know everyone can use a non biased MLB writer

First of all, these writers are responsible for publishing multiple articles a day by referencing numerous sources while simultaneously keeping up with the days’ slate of games. Secondly, this is free content, so either go somewhere else or quit complaining. Finally, if you reread the article, Polishuk mentions that Gonsalves has a decent ERA in triple A. However, he generously points out some underlying metrics that explain his lack of big league opportunities (his inflated walk rate)

Sounds like you really like Gonsalves to me. He missed pretty much all 2019 with an elbow injury and in 2018 Gonsalves posted a 4.04 FIP (4.41 xFIP) at AAA with his only significant playing time there over a season of 100.1 innings.

If you look at Gonsalves overall in AAA 2017-2019 the last 3 seasons.
      3.46 ERA, 4.25 FIP
      8.57 K/9, 4.89 BB/9.

Those aren’t very good numbers when it comes to projecting MLB performance. From an eyeball test, Gonsalves doesn’t fool many people and has pretty mediocre pitches. With a fastball that barely hits 90mph, he needs excellent command, and he doesn’t have it.

Another Stellar Pickup by Bloom. Mike Perez Pitched great yesterday, giving up 5 runs by the second inning to of all teams, Baltimore. He could have been had for the Major League Minimum. He was a C type pitcher at best and never anything more. This is Boston not B City Tampa Bay where they can barely get 7,000 fans a game. The trade of Betts was bad as well, engineered by John Henry who is making a ton of money. I am so tired of this BS with the loss of Johnny Damon, Jon Lester, and now Mookie Betts. He has the money ! This is not a pauper baseball franchise!
