The Pirates have placed reliever Keone Kela on the 10-day injured list, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic tweets. The team’s unable to disclose the reason for his IL placement.
Kela hasn’t participated in Summer Camp, and it’s not known how much more time the right-hander will miss. If he does pitch this year, though, he should once again be one of the Pirates’ go-to late-game options.
Kela has quietly been among the game’s most effective relievers for most of his career, which began in Texas in 2015, having regularly run up high strikeout totals and impressive run prevention numbers. Last year, his first full season in Pittsburgh, was more of the same from a production standpoint. A shoulder injury and two suspensions limited Kela to just 29 2/3 innings, though he did post a 2.12 ERA/3.52 FIP with 10.01 K/9 and 3.34 BB/9 in that span.
The 27-year-old Kela isn’t the only notable Pirate who has been absent from camp. Outfielder Gregory Polanco has been out for an undisclosed reason since Monday. Meanwhile, standout third base prospect Ke’Bryan Hayes hasn’t practiced at all. The Pirates haven’t provided details on his status.

Agreed.
Polanco and Kela are addition by subtraction. No loss, regardless of their “WAR” valuation.

once again Polanco is the whipping boy…
clepto
Maybe if you watched him more than 1 time per month, you might understand.
Robertowannabe
I watch him plenty. His problems have been more injury related than anything else. He finally was hitting consistently when he had his ugly slide..He does have lapses in the field but the biggest problem last year was the lack of an arm due to the shoulder injury sustained in the slide. By all accounts he arm is strong again and Shelton was raving about him.
clepto
Athletic ability? Tremendous.
Health? Huge liability.
Baseball IQ: Huge liability.
Prior to the slide, he was still on the IL multiple times.
I agree he has had streaks (key word) of above average play, there are FAR too many mental gaffs and baserunning errors to offset his value, WHEN he plays. His multiple base running errors are little league level mistakes, and that is being nice.
I have been a proponent of moving him for whatever can be gotten for 2 plus years. Maybe I will be wrong, but I would bet he will not live up to prospect hype or be an above average player.
Crick is also on a short leash in my book.

I’ve been asking for the better part of a month how long a player can be expected to miss if he tests positive for the virus, yet has no symptoms.
Matt Thaiss, who I guess doesn’t rate on this site, tested positive for the virus, MLB kept him out for 21 days. So, lets assume that he had the virus for a few days before he was tested, let’s assume it’s going to take a couple three days of team workouts to get back on the field.
So it seems a player who gets this virus can easily be out a month. Half the season!!
Why this news didn’t warrant a mention, I’ll never know.
Robertowannabe
you have to test negative on two consecutive tests 24 hours apart. Depends on each individual how long it may take. I have read where some people are still testing positive over a month after the initial positive st but no symptoms and not supposed to be contagious. I guess they can not give a set time lime because everyone is different
Halo11Fan
Thanks. I thought it was important information. A player, who has no symptoms, can easily miss a month.
This is the first player I know that has opened up about how many days he has been shelved with no symptoms.
I think it’s a big deal.
jcmarte23
I don’t wish injuries or illness on anyone but I also don’t feel bad for any Pirates. After that trash display of a team last year intentionally trying to bean and hurt players. Maybe now that the loser Hurdle is gone they will clean up their playing. Signed, a Reds fan.
Halo11Fan
You do realize “bean” refers to a players head.. right?
Sticking a ball in ones ribs in not a bean ball.
Did someone have their head thrown at? And in baseball, pitchers stick other players in the ribs pretty darn often.
Robertowannabe
Baker was having his pitcher throw at Pirates players for years too. McCutchen got hit almost every game he played against the Reds back then
Halo11Fan
I remember the Rangers practicing pitching up and in to Mike Trout. They hit him in the head once.
Teaching a young pitcher how to pitch inside at the major league level? Who does that? That should be taught much earlier than that.
It’s why Trout wears the face guard now.
Also, you can bet, Angel pitchers stuck a few appropriate pitches in a few Texas hitters ribs.
Robertowannabe
Whole lot of batters wear the face guard now. Batters have fouled of bunts into their jaws and broke them in the last few years. Multi8ple young pitchers throwing around 100 mph now and not always knowing where the ball is going. Players wearing more protection than ever getting into the batter’s box. You will see pitcher’s starting to wear more gear soon too. When the ball comes to the batter going 100 mph, it will come back at the pitcher a lot faster more often. More pitchers then ever getting hit by batted balls these days.
clepto
Obviously you are a Reds or Cubs fan, JC, and an uneducated one to boot. Get the facts first.
Halo11Fan
Clepto, You can’t be talking to me..
Bean ball refers to someone’s head.
Pitchers stick balls in other players ribs all the time.
And of course I asked a questions:
Did someone have their head thrown at?
Since I’m neither a Reds or Pirates fan, I’m not aware of every batter that gets pitched inside for every team, or am I aware of every brawl which takes place between teams.
However, I am aware of fans exaggerating, and using terms incorrectly. Did someone get their head thrown at? If so, bean ball fits. But headhunting is so rare today.

Ok didn’t know we were getting into the specifics of ‘bean’. I think you both know what I meant. The Pirates tried to intentionally throw at and injure several players last year. They play this game of everyone knows their dirty so they throw at teams/players first, then somehow both teams get warnings and hence the other team can’t retaliate without fear of ejections. You both must be Pirates fans to defend their actions and that’s fine. You surely wouldn’t be if it was reversed and your best players were continually being thrown at with the intent of being injured every game. The only guy even worth trying to injure on Pittsburgh is Bell…
Halo11Fan
I’m not aware of the play. When someone uses the word “bean”, that has special meaning.
Pitchers stick “batters in the ribs” all the time. It’s meant to send a message. Sometimes appropriatly, sometimes inappropriately, they are not meant to hurt.
But again, I only picked up on it because the word “bean” was used.
jcmarte23
Valid point. I think the point I was making is that there really is never an ‘appropriate’ time for Pittsburgh to be intentionally throwing at players. They are 20+ games out of first, they are always the first team in a game to do so knowing there will be warnings after that and teams have few options to retaliate, etc. They were a bunch of thugs and I am hoping with new leadership they will change their ways. I miss the days when the Reds and Pirates had competitive ball clubs and I hope both teams get back to those days and soon…
Halo11Fan
JC, I disagree. I gave a Mike Trout example earlier.
It a player is trying to hook pitches away, it’s perfectly acceptable to pitch inside That batter will often get one in the ribs.
Don Drysdale once said (paraphrasing), half the plate is mine and half the plate is the hitters. I don’t tell tell him which half.

JC – stupid comment based on uneducated opinion. Take off your Cub or Red fan boy glasses and look at facts.

Ok Clepto do you want to talk facts–how about that the Reds were hit the 2nd most times in the league last year and the Cubs were 4th. Where do you think the majority of those came from? How about you quit trying to defend their actions…by the way, the Pirates were in the bottom half of the league for the reasons I mentioned above…
clepto
Please show me EXACTLY that JC. Where are the FACTs on who hit them? Display, link.
And while you are at it, please break out those hits by intentional vs unintentional?
Also, how about you also link the philosophy of those team hitting coaches. Crowding the plate- what is their specific view? Lets hear it, since you have ALL the facts.
Make sure you factor in those outstanding citizen Amir Garrett.
How about you take off your Reds colored glasses first. I knew by the pure stupidity of your comments you were one of the two fan bases.
Awaiting the links…..
jcmarte23
This is a pointless conversation. You want me to give you the intentional vs. unintentional hit by batters? Do you want me to go ask all of their pitchers? Halo11Fan was right, you are not even worth talking baseball with…if that’s what you want to call it. From now on, I’ll just laugh at your comments and lack of baseball knowledge and stick to talking to people that can actually have a reasonable, non-attacking, and logical conversation.
clepto
I did some work for you, fan boy. Guess who is in top hit by pitch batters for past 5 seasons.
Rizzo, x 3 yrs
Dietrich x 1 [with Miami]
Hmm. Where is it well documented Rizzo stands? Care to answer? Which team then? And who do they play 18 times per year?
Where did Dietrich play last year? Hmm. If he has been a league leader in HBP, suggests he lines up in a certain way? Hmm. Who did that team play 18 times last year?
Point is, Einstein, your commentary is opinion from Reds fan boards. Nothing else. But, if want to be schooled in facts, let me know.
You seemed to have all the “facts” but now, your response is to change subject or ignore. Well, we all now know the facts……
jcmarte23
Way to ‘school’ me (eye roll). Here’s an article you may find of interest. Since 2015, the Pirates have been involved in 20 percent of bench clearing brawls…20%! They make up 3% of the teams but have one fifth of the bench clearing brawls which are pretty much entirely caused by players getting thrown at. Additionally, you don’t think the players know better than the casual observer if a HBP is intentional or the result of a guy ‘crowding the plate’? By the way, these brawls were not just the Reds and Cubs…you will find the Braves, Mets, Rockies, and Nats also on this list. I don’t how many more ‘facts’ you want that this and this article but go ahead and rebut if you would like. Or you can just stop defending a POS organization like the Pirates at any point now…enjoy your 14 Pirates wins this year though ‘fan boy’…
mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/07/31/pirates-have-an-anger…
jcmarte23
Also take note in that article that since 2018, they have been involved in 36% of bench clearing brawls! WOW! I’m not sure how that can be ANY clearer that it is Pirates issue… any unbiased fan can easily see that when they a 3% of baseball teams but involved in over a third of brawls…go ahead and try to defend it though.
clepto
Well, lets start with this…..
Bench clearing brawls are a direct result of pitching to hit. Is this correct? Lets be sure about that. Its NEVER sliding into a player, or a bat flip, or admiring a HR, or ANYTHING like that? That toss is the SINGLE root cause of any brawl. Wow.
In your article (nice work, by the way), Rangers AND Reds are listed quite prevalently. Do they “too” aim at players? Are they “too” a “POS” organization? Hmm. A dilemma.
So, while this was a nice try, and actual effort for a fan boy such as yourself, it still does not prove the pirates intentionally throw at a player more than any other organization. And that, sonny boy, you aint gonna find. You will just have to continue to quote false narratives without the right facts to back it up. And that, I know, leaves a little burn, doesnt it?
Ill just leave you with this: “Cueto, Cueto, Cueto”
wild bill tetley
Clepto is on a roll. Clepto is also correct. He has owned this entire thread.
jcmarte23
Yes he is “correct”… how do? I never said all brawls were the result of players being thrown at if you read. But yes let’s play this out, all of these teams decided to also bat flip, stare at a home run, and slide hard into a base only against the Pirates to the tune of 36% of the time leading to a bench clearing crawl. That’s rational to believe that these teams would risk injury and suspension of their players and waste their time on a franchise that is completely irrelevant and has been so for a long time?
clepto
And the Reds have been more or less relevant than the Pirates since, say your convenient date of 2015??? Please answer that one and lets just say you have had enough beat down.
jcmarte23
*how so
wild bill tetley
36% eh? So 36% of the time when a hitter should walk toward first base they decide to run toward the pitcher, and that’s the fault of the Pirates? You do know you are not supposed to fight in baseball, right? If you get hit by a baseball you are awarded first base. Not awarded with a free swing at the pitcher. Don’t like getting beaned? Stop pimping homeruns. That 36% will drop real quick.
jcmarte23
To both of you:
1) I never said the Reds were relevant. See “teams” and focus on reading comprehension.
2) Bat flipping is part of baseball these days, accept it. If you watch baseball at all, you will see the Reds are far from the most notorious for bat flips (see my agreement on them being as irrelevant above- ha). The Pirates do have other options than to retaliate by intentionally trying to throw at and injure players afterwards and try to control their “anger problem”… I.e. not suck, don’t give up home runs, adjust to the times, etc. When you are 20 games out and nothing to lose though, why not act out with these actions and an inferiority complex? Teams eventually have to stand up for themselves and retaliate and fight since MLB has refused to step in and significantly punish the Pirates for some unknown reason.
It’s obvious we will not see eye to eye on this though and it’s ok to disagree. I wish both of our teams good luck this season…
wild bill tetley
A hit by pitch has been part of the game, and an actual rule, since the 19th century. Accept it. Wanna bat flip? Expect some seams to wear on you for a week. Don’t like that? Aw shucks. Trot to first base. Actions vs. consequences. There is no inferiority complex here. We’re on an even field starting a 0-0 in the first inning.
Adjusting to “the times” has caused more homeruns, more scoring, longer games and less fan interest. Imagine that. Less fan interest. Maybe the times need a rewind, or a different kind of change?
clepto
JC – you havent made 1 single arguement that hasnt been squashed. Just stop. Just stop trying to twist what was clearly said. Just stop trying to retract or refine what you said. At the end of day, you tried to pass off a bold sensationalism as fact. You were caught and owned. Period. End of discussion. And we didnt even need to get into modern trend on pitch count and its correlation to HBP, or the ever changing strike zone.
You lost. Its over. The most props you are or were going to get is the nod of the cap for actually finding a very loosely article on brawls. That more than most of the false narrative kings on here could do.
You sir have a nice weekend and know, deep down, I am still a fan of Reds winning the division this year over the Cubs and particualarly BFIB Cards. These fan bases are void of any logic.
jcmarte23
Clepto and WBT- if you can’t even step back and listen/read with an open mind, then not only should you not be on sports forums but you also should never engage in any dialogue. To WBT, so the argument now is the Pirates are the martyrs of baseball and saving the game for traditionalists? Ok got it. Easy to do when you’re down 7 runs in the 8th inning… and to Clepto- you talk facts but the only “facts” you skewed out was an obscure Rizzo and Dietrich stat that was irrelevant… neither of you had any semblance of facts or stats whatsoever compared to what I provided. The “just stop” and you were “owned” is typical I am beaten and don’t know how to respond rhetoric… either one of you have any business on a baseball forum
clepto
This sneak attack post 1 day later does not undo the hammering you took. Face it: you lost. You are subjective commentary, nothing more.
How about, instead of flailing around like a fat kid in the pool, you just shut up, and walk away. Period.
On a positive note, anyone who needs some political campaign speeches or ads written…..i got a good idea who can bend the reality. You, sir, might become independently wealthy on that alone. Good luck!
